I cannot agree more with you. It is such a shame that Franck's music is at times pushed to the side. His music is the stepping stone for what is to come. Vierne would not be Vierne without Franck and so on. This piece in particular, with the Cavaille-Coll organ sparked a generation of symphonic organ works. Francks music is dripping with lush chromatic passages that are pre refer-ian! Just magical. Imagine sitting in Paris in the 1870's listening to the marvelous music!

I currently do my PhD thesis about Franck`s organ and symphonic works and I absolutly agree that he is among the most underestimated composers of the romanticism. And what is more- although an ordinary listener cannot percive it- he is probably the stylistic predecessor of Debussy.

PEOPLE know of his GREATNESS... his violin sonata made sure of that... (really... it's possibly the GREATEST of all violin sonatas... even many experts would agree...!)

The big problem is - he began the SYMPHONIC style of music, not the romantic. Vidor and Vierne followed his lead.

... I agree. Liszt had heard Franck on a couple occasions and was incredibly moved by the Belgian master's work.Franck was an incredible improvisor and It is sad that so many much of his work died within the walls of Saint Clotilde never to be heard again.

The best of his improvisations are no doubt embodied in his published compositions !!!!

I hadn't thought of it before, but It's a wonderful statement of Franck's greatness as an organ composer that his great reputation rests on a mere 12 pieces, far fewer than Bach's!, the 6 pieces of 1860-1862, of which this is #2, Fantaisie ut majeur, GPS, Prélude, Fugue et Variation en si mineur, Pastorale, Priére, Final the 3 pieces of 1878 Fantaisie la majeur, Cantabile, Pièce Hèroïque, and the posthumous 1890 Trois Chorales. His "L'Organiste" pieces just don't have the same gravitas as the 12, though several are certainly interesting fare.

a little to straight forward... then she fools yahhh with tasteful, expressive rubato... ... like a true artist...! GREAT tempi in the fast stuff... not toooo fast that things go missing... which is nice cause there's so much to this music...

You are not alone. I myself love Franck's œuvre, but an organist friend of mine dismissed his music as "non-pieces". I really can't understand why! I think it is fair to say, at least, that Franck's music is very often poorly played (not referring to MC Alain's interpretation). Franck's music may seem to "lack substance", but for me, it provides many different opportunities for expression which is not found in other music. The Final, especially, has no comparison.

Those who feel that Franck's work lacks substance have not heard it, Or hearing, have not listened. His word, particularly this one, was intricate, evolving through the piece, recalling the theme and usually coming to a oponderous ending, or gliding away on soft sounds. Couperin - you are so correct in your conclusions.. Tell these nay-sayers to play his music. That is the test. Most "Organists" can't begin to perform it without buggering it up.

I love Marie Claire Alain, and I consider her my virtual teacher, but in this case I find tempi not matching with what Franck indicated on his score. The initial andante serioso is in particular too fast and not at all "serioso".

Steve - I think you miss the point with the Final - it's surely a pastiche!!! The close, with its multitude of 'false endings' has to be a send-up of poor composition. It's certainly not (and I would say Franck would say it was never intended to be) in the same league as the rest of the 'Twelve'.

'Contrapuntal masterpiece'. It's a load of block chords!!! To see that it was a pastiche of 'bad style', just look at the dedication: none other than Lefebvre-Wely!!!

I must be the only organist who is immune to the attractions of this piece. To me, the themes are stupid and the whole sounds like bad silent movie music. Of Franck's twelve major works, only the Prelude, Fugue and Variation, the Piece Heroique, and the Chorals have any merit. The rest can be forgotten. The Pastorale has an interesting theme, but it is clumsily handled. The Finale has a great first page or two, but goes on far too long.

Your right because I fell in love with it 45 years ago and it is one of my favorites along side the Ad Nos the prelude and fugue on Bach and the 94Th Psalm by Rebuke.

You could say the same thing about Buxtehude. Remember Franck as struggling with a whole new concept of organ literature. He was the pioneer. From his works came Widor. Unfortunately what followed was unfortunate. I wonder what you would say about messyain or some of Dupre and vierne.
