Writer-director Céline Sciamma and stars Adèle Haenel and Noémie Merlant talk Portrait of a Lady on Fire in a Q&A moderated by Amy Taubin. They discuss a David Lynch-esque approach to sound design, the similarities between directing and painting, how art consoles the soul, the costume design, and (spoilers!) the film's final scene.
Céline Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a Main Slate selection at the 57th New York Film Festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center from Friday, September 27 - Sunday, October 13. See ticket info, the schedule, and more: filmlinc.org/nyff
On the cusp of the 19th century, young painter Marianne travels to a rugged, rocky island off the coast of Brittany. Here, she has been commissioned to create a wedding portrait of the wealthy yet free-spirited Héloise, whose hand in marriage has been promised to a man she’s never met. Resentful of the forced union, Héloise at first refuses to be painted, yet a growing bond-at first emotional and then erotic-develops between the women, exquisitely etched by Noémie Merlant as the artist and Adèle Haenel as her initially reluctant muse. With a visual precision as delicate as that of Merlant’s Marianne-whose patient acts of creation are lovingly dwelt upon-Céline Sciamma classically builds her double portrait from tentative romance to melodramatic rapture to a quietly devastating ending, all while subverting the traditional story of an artist and “his” muse. Winner of the Best Screenplay award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. A NEON release.
A centerpiece of New York culture since 1963, the New York Film Festival will introduce the most essential new cinematic works from around the world to U.S. audiences in its Main Slate. NYFF will also continue to feature a variety of titles in different sections and sidebars, including Spotlight on Documentary, newly rejuvenated classics in Restorations and Revivals, a diverse selection of international and locally made Shorts, the ever-expanding experimental showcase Projections, and the immersive storytelling experiences of the cutting-edge Convergence. Additionally, there will be an exciting lineup of special events, free filmmaker talks and panel discussions, and the latest editions of our annual Industry and Critic Academies.

I get what Adele was trying to say. She wasn't trying to portray an 18th century French woman so much as she was trying to portray a young woman in a complex and emotional situation.

Oh, in this film there is a lot of understatement with the sensual world of a woman who is between two natures - her own and ambivalent, like the nature of androgynous feelings. But the scene where the heroine of Noemie Merlan does not take her eyes off the Muse, Love, Girl, Madame, this does not mean anything to me, because it does not show the full depth of genuine yet unrevealed feelings. She could show the audience real feelings, but this would not be enough to show many of us that there is true love, passion, choice, destiny!)

I think I can remember the painting where they part, and they talk about how the lovers could have chosen to let go of one another to not feel the pain that comes with and how it could ruin the memory of each other when they see each other. when one sees the other they both knew each other were there but the two did not look at each other. they didn't want to ruin the memories of each other by seeing each other again, they both decided not to see each other to not feel the pain and experience the pain that comes with not seeing each other. they chose not to see each other.

i actually find the last question valid too. it's great to know that céline chose the colors of the costumes to her liking and in accordance to their aesthetic or visual impact. i guess we, as the audience, can make our own self-interpretation of this and their symbolism to our personal selves. the same with the true meaning of the ending. for me, we all know that héloïse is the "lady on fire," as fire being a symbol for the anger and the imprisonment or lack of liberty that she felt. but as marianne is also wearing a dress with the red color (akin to the color of fire), it supports the idea she told héloïse: "i understand you." she feels the feeling of her significant other. and how even though we view her as a free soul, she also has her internal battles. she is also right for the title "lady on fire." maybe that is how héloïse perceives her as well; as someone incredibly close to her. and as héloïse is wearing a blue-colored dress, which transitions into a white wedding dress in the last scene that continues to haunt marianne; if we simply look at marianne's final outfit, she is wearing blue; color initially related to héloïse. this means that héloïse really had an impact on her. héloïse still lingers in her, everywhere she goes. héloïse, along with their shared love, will forever remain in her memory.

God bless the viewer who asked about the last sequence -- I was so moved by Celine's answer explaining that this idea was what drove the film, and was her "compass" for the birth of portrait. It just says so much about the intention and proactivity it takes to execute a burning idea as a creator/writer/director. It's essentially filling the void of a silence.

I'm holding onto that marriage thing actually. Even if it's a joke. But kidding aside, I understand how they're at lost with words or even if they explain it in their language. It's really difficult to explain into words what art is since we can have different interpretation by it that is why, the movie has that impact. You still long for it, holdimg on to it as it ended. Like what Celine said, there is a future in the words 'I love you'.

Dios!! I´m so obsessed since the premiere in 2019, the actuation, direction, script, cinematography, sound, atmosphere... well

@@bencruz4563 The question from an audience member was if Céline could let her muses (Adèle and Noémie) go (literally and figuratively) after the movie. And her answer was meant kind of that Adèle and Noémie could even get married and she would be ok with it - like she's able to let them both go (literally and figuratively) without jealousy or trying to clinch one of them because she's not in love with either of them. - That's what I got from that part. I hope it helps.

I could not understand why Marianne and Heloise didn’t try to keep in touch with each other after Marianne left and Heloise got married. There was mention of letter writing in the movie. Both knew where the other one lived. What a heartbreaking ending! I would like to see a sequel where Marianne and Heloise find each other again.

Because they would never be together. Do you honestly think they could be "friends"? She's a married, aristocratic woman with a child. Heloise chose to remember...
@tracys169
@tracys169 2 жыл бұрын
Like Emily has said, she chose to remember, so she chose the poet's choice, not the lover's choice. Remember when they're talking about Orpheus and Euridyce and Marianne suggested that Orpheus wants to remember, prefers the memory, a poet's choice rather the lover's choice....

She looked a bit disturbed. She was even avoiding answering questions from the beginning. Celine looked to her for some time after the time Noemie answered. In the middle, she tried to talk and lost her words. Then when the guy from Mexico asked a question, Celine and Noemie talked to her again and she was like, oh we have to answer too? then replied. Probably it wasn't a good day for her, concentration wise.

Farzana Zafreen yeah. Promoting the film and travelling around the world talking at the festivals must be so draining and exhausting for them so I don't blame them in a way for letting others answer the questions. Especially if they are ones they have been asked many times before but it's all part of the work process. The movie is sensational and I thought they all did a really good job.
