Why do I stop using retinol?
-It is scientifically proven that retinol can increase collagen production, enhance cell turnover, reduce pigment production and gently exfoliate the superficial layer of the skin for 6 to 2 years (varies in different publications).
-But, what happens if you use retinol for many years? We don’t know the exact answer and all the statements are assumptions. Scientists don’t know exactly how the intensive cell turnover continues over the long term. So for that reason, I decided to use retinol until I see some results and then take a break from it for 6-2 years. For reference, I am in my thirties and I don’t have any visible sun damage signs since I have been using sunscreens for most of my twenties until now.
-There are many factors involved in deciding how long should you use retinol before the break such as concentration, sun damage, real age and age of your skin.
-Last year, I started my retinol journey with a very low concentration and gentle formula (Cerave night serum) and then increased the concentration to 1.5% (No7 retinol serum). For the eyes, I first used La Roche Posay and then Neutrogena eye retinol cream.
-Tip about retinol concentration: it doesn’t matter what concentration you use, you will eventually see the same results. It is just a matter of time! The higher the concentration is the faster you see the changes. So if you have very sensitive skin, don’t bother using high concentrations! Stick with the low potent and gentle formula.
