Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar, abbreviated C-RAM or Counter-RAM, is a set of systems used to detect and/or destroy incoming artillery, rockets and mortar rounds in the air before they hit their ground targets, or simply provide early warning.
C-RAM is effectively a land version of weapons such as the Phalanx CIWS radar-controlled rapid-fire gun for close in protection of vessels from missiles.
C-RAM is an initiative taken in response to an operational needs statement made by the Multinational Force Iraq (MNF-I). The directive arose in response to the increasing number of casualties caused by attacks using rockets, artillery, and mortars in Iraq. The land-based Phalanx B was subsequently deployed in Iraq in the summer of 2004. It protected the Green Zone and Camp Victory in Baghdad, Joint Base Balad near Balad, Iraq, and was also deployed by the British Army in southern Iraq.

Just a few points for those who don't know. Designed as last layer defense for ships, not primary defense. Before Phalanx engages, a target would have to make it past the aircraft defense shield, the long range missile defense shield, medium range missile shield, and short range missile defense shield. Also, unless the ship is docked in port, I don't think any small boat is going to be allowed to get close enough to fire off a RPG or any other man launched missile. With recent modifications, it has both radar guidance and infra-red sighting. A sniper could possibly get close enough to disable the radar system if he was very good and could avoid the thermal targeting. However, if you could get one that close, I think you could possibly pick a better target than a repairable and replaceable weapon system. Maybe something with stars. Not to mention that if there are 2 Phalanx systems present, the second one will convert you to hamburger meat and pink spray for your trouble. As far as accuracy, the rounds are about 6 feet apart in flight leaving little room to go between them. Also, it tracks its own rounds as well as the target to correct fire. Meaning that it can track a target a little larger than your thumb at 3.5 miles. Most attacks at the bases where these are stationed consist of small mobile mortar teams firing a few rounds trying to get lucky with a hit then getting away as fast as possible. Also they freeze the mortar tube, place a mortar in the end so that when the tube warms up and expands the mortar drops after they have had time to leave the area. So, small numbers of incoming targets, attacks spaced out, random timing of attacks. Ideal defense for this situation.

So, basically this thing protects small squads from missiles and other projectiles and these small squads get close to an enemy, blast their positions with mortars from various points and run away? Sounds like a nice tactics, since we all know how even one mortar changes the battlefield for troops owning it Can this thing protect such squqds from being shelled with artilery? What if enemy detecs it and tries to rush with his own tanks or other vehicles, what is the anti-tank defence? Infratry with missiles or some kind of other reaction tanks?

Saw one of these take out a "sea skimming" missile doin warp 5 just off the water going to a target being pulled by a "carrier". One of the most impressive things I've ever seen. Turned the missile into metal shavings! It even fired a "ranging burst" just before the actual shot.

And it protects bases and boats. A boat will dock, and this system will protect it from incoming mortars or missles. in a FOB this will protect from incoming mortars. These Guns were all around AB Anaconda in Iraq. They did an excellent job of defending against incoming Mortars and rockets. Loved hearing them go off and watching the fireworks.

Actually, most of what you heard was test firing. They were not that effective at Anaconda because there were so many friendly aircraft flying around. By the time the target areas was checked to avoid a friendly fire incident, it was usually too late to fire. I think the actual kill number for the year we were there was 9. In areas where they were not constantly test flying helicopters, I would imagine they were a lot more useful. However, a lot of those warnings you heard were false alarms. A lot were triggered by things like wedding parties shooting in the air. The radars do not distinguish between mortars and bursts of automatic weapon fire like AK 47s.

Its cute that these things can shoot down 1-2 mortars every 10 seconds. A real battle would see so many falling that you wouldnt be able to separate the sound of the explosions from one another anymore.

That ripple of explosions you hear after the gun stops is the rounds which missed self destructing. There may be as many as 100-300 fired at a time. I don't know the cost per round, but I would guess it is several times higher than $10 each, so you are looking at $1,000 for each target. Against insurgents firing 3-10 rounds before packing up, this is feasible, but in full battle mode, you are looking at that many rounds coming in at the same time, so some are going to get through, and the gun may well need reloading while they are still firing. Don't assume this is the golden key to protect troops from all incoming fire. A lot will get through in a full on war scenario.

its a standard set up for Gatling style weapons... the Russians and Chinese use it as well the Russians had a cool one at one point that used the gas from firing to rotate the barrels instead of an electric motor that everyone else used

Can proudly say that this weapons systems saved my life and the lives of my fellow service members in Iraq on numerous occasions. Its scary as shit when the allow sounds "incoming" but then you hear the hammer come down at a ridiculous rate of speed and accuracy. Its a component. The Ageia is a combat sysyem centered around a combat comuter and the SPY family of radars. It recieves feedback from all the other sensors and interfaces eith all the weapons systems. I am Not sure the level of autonomy it can achieve now.

Served with a Vulcan Battery in 1970 Fort Bliss TX. Pedals and hands operated. Had to shoot a banner off the tail of a drone. Lots of fun was had by all.

Cant remember exactly but when I was in the Royal Navy, I remember some ratings talking about this counter system and referring to it as the goal keeper. Really impressive stuff!

Goalkeeper is also a CIWS, but based upon the 30mm Gau-8 rotary cannon instead of the M61 20mm variant. Also the targeting and tracking radar on the Goalkeeper used to be superior. (Also needed due to lower RoF.) Goalkeeper was a European solution, the 30mm cannon had longer range and better capabilities against surface targets. The Gau-8 became famous as the A-10 Warthog main cannon.

This system will get even more effective when they implement the air burst rounds. We always need the best stuff to protect our troops. At the same time it would be a startling experience to be standing next to one of these when it identifies and responds to a threat, like a mortar, you dont get a lot of early warning with.

I was below deck working alone directly the deck below the phalanx when it was test fired without my knowledge, I jump out of my skin, it was incredibly powerful and I've been around the 5" guns and that phalanx made me change my skivvies.

I had one of these on the other side of my shower unit in Balad. In a word. LOUD. You could feel it in your teeth. It would vibrate all the water droplets of the wall. It was one pissed off R2D2. Insanely awesome at night. Red trail radiating out and the explosions were right out of the Matrix when he held his hand up and destroyed all the machines flying at them. Looked just like that.

So they finally found a trailer heavy enough to keep from vibrating around when it fires. It used to make the trailers literally vibrate several feet in the opposite direction of wherever it was firing.

Must've been popular for the Army/Marines on the ground because many Burke-class destroyers only have one instead of two of these systems on board. Even the carriers have less 20mm CIWS now though those are in part being replaced by the RAM system.
