It was great to catch both an Airbus Atlas A400M a Lockheed C130J Hercules conducting tactical landings on Pembrey beach in Wales. We had about three hours of touch and goes, low approaches and landing to full stop on the sands. I've added some titles showing some key differences between both aircraft.

I miss the C-130; it’s taken me to many places, none of which were conducive to a long life! I regret the fact that I’ll never get to fly on an Atlas as I’m medically discharged. As an aside, it states the range of a C-130 as 2,350 miles. That is unless you have a crazy Australian pilot who ‘reckons’ that because we have a great tailwind we probably don’t need to stop for a refuel! We made it back on fumes but did a fair bit more than 2350 miles 👍😉

I've once I was out walking in an open area, experinced a C130 Hercules low fly over, just above my head. I swear I could almost touch it's belly, it was so low. The turn radius on this beast is unbelievable, such an agile giant.

The A400M appears to be everything it should be. If the designer's goal was to better a C-130. The A400M looks like a great shot. And I've a couple thousand hours in -130s. I like the A400M

I had no idea the A400M Atlas was so much bigger and had so much more performance and capacity than the venerable Herky. Good the RAF has something with increased capacity. If the A400M holds up as well as the C-130 that'll be quite some performance. The Hercules looked brand new - shout out to RAF maintenance crews! The A400M has that superb flying tail which, flying through clean above the pro wash air must be responsible for a lot of the lifting capacity, as well as advanced airfoil design which is a hallmark of Airbus. Approx. double the performance in range & capacity for similar wingspan is quite an achievement. Nice design. All the best, Rob

ZH869 is actually a C-130J, which have only been around since 1996. I'm not sure how old that exact airframe is, but it's a mere whipper-snapper compared to the design overall, hence her relatively good looks. Re: A400M, tail planes actually have a negative contribution to lift, as they need to create downforce to counteract the wings desire to pitch the aircraft nose downward (cambered aerofoils and Newton's 3rd Law of Motion apply). The props on each wing rotate inwards towards each other, creating a 'funnelled' blast of air which yields considerably more lift than if the were spinning the same direction. It's a fantastic aircraft, and one I was very proud to help design!😀

@@LoudRC My understanding was that the newer, longer Herkybirds were converted from earlier versions by doing a cut and shut, with an additional length of fuselage added. This was done by Marshall's of Cambridge in the UK. Then they got the engine and prop upgrades and ECM stuff as another series of upgrades. So although new "variants" they are not all new airframes.
@kevt8864
@kevt8864 Жыл бұрын
@@AlanEvans789 , your understanding is incorrect. All of the C-130Js are completely new airframes built by Lockheed. The first RAF one was delivered in 1999, just 2 years before the C17. The C-130J may look the same externally but has a huge number of improvements.

I rode three flights in the C-130. The inside is insanely noisy and if empty, the resonant vibrations can provoke your lungs to trigger coughing until you move to non-resonant location. Another words - passengers and cargo ARE the vibration dampeners of a C-130. I can't comment about the A400M, but from the ground it matches a C-130 STOL characteristics nicely!

The U.S. Air Force issued its original design specification for the C-130 in 1951, yet the remarkable plane remains in production. The initial production model was the C-130A, with four Allison T56-A-11 or -9 turboprop engines. A total of 219 were ordered and deliveries began in December 1956. The A400M made its first flight on 11 December 2009.

Both are definitely good aircraft. But the whole idea behind the C-130 was it's toughness and main objective of short takeoff and landing. This is why it excels in a shorter take off because it doesn't weigh as much empty by a long shot. The longer it takes you to get off the ground hinders the number of places where you can land. And if you're under fire the quicker you get airborne, the quicker you can get away from that fire. All the other is apples and oranges, especially things like distance before refueling. All missions have refueling built in to the mission plan and it's done in flight. The range of the C-130 is more than adequate to get them into safe airspace to do a refilling. So it all boils down to what you're wanting the mission of the aircraft to be. If it is to get in and drop troops or he put me off and get back in the air in the least amount of time to see C-130 is still the top aircraft. And if you want to haul a larger amount of cargo somewhere a little faster and land at a smaller base instead of say on a beach closer to a war zone then the Airbus would probably fit the mission better than the C-130 But for pure STOL capabilities in a hostile environment even after 70 years of service with some modifications the Hercules still can't be beat.
@SouperAsH
@SouperAsH 2 жыл бұрын
Both machines nearly double their weight in cargo lift capacity. The un-refueled range of the A-400 is certainly appealing, but yours is a very valid point on that notion- the aerial refueling is an automatic inclusion to almost every mission flight. 1950s design vs 1990s. I think the Hercules design criteria was very direct, and single-mission focused. A-400 was probably designed to accommodate the dimensions, and weights of modern front line equipment.

Correct me if I'm wrong but am I right in stating that the RAF is the only air force in the world that has C130, A400m and C17 aircraft at its disposal? Surely this gives the RAF the ability to compare the attributes and limitations of each aircraft type on many different mission profiles on an ongoing basis as any other organisation?

I'd like to see a comparison between the C130 and the Embraer C390.

It would be interesting to see how the C390's big turbofans cope with the sand.

Interesting how similar two airplanes introduced nearly 60 years apart truly are.

The A400M is about 10 meters longer and has double the range of the C-130. So these two planes are not really similar.

Pilot's saying "Don't sink you barsteward !". Best way to ruin a car . . Drive it on a salt-water beach.

The C130 in this vid is an old one. To bad they didn’t have a J model.

If land on beach most probably minor damage on the engine and propellers.

Your C-130 max takeoff weight is way off! You say it is 69 tons, without TYCOM approval you can take off at 90 tons, 180,000 pounds. I have taken off at 184,600 pounds in a Herc before, the highest we could climb to was 13,000 feet until we burned off alot of fuel. This was with the old four bladed props. The J model and the eight blade models have more torque.
