C200 Vs C70

People are asking me if they should buy the Canon C200 or the Canon C70. Here are my thoughts. It's not that straightforward and you have to ask yourself what you are looking to do with the camera.

I originally had the C200 on my 4K cinema camera wishlist. It got replaced on the list when the C70 came out with "better" specs for the same price. Now I've replaced the C70 with a whole new cam: the C200! Used C200s are now (in Sept. 2022) $3K, which creates a whole new position in the Canon cinema camera lineup. At $3K I now favor the C200 over the $5.5K C70 for the kind of shooting I want to do. Thanks Ben for all your great videos that are helping us take a fresh look at the C200.

Just got a c200 with BP a60, cfast to ssd adapter and NTG3 for $2800 on ebay. Excited to use it.

I recently purchased C200 and I was not happy when C70 came out. But you kind of convinced me to stay with the camera and learn the tool. I look forward to seeing more content about C200 from you! Keep up the good work!

Hey Ben, fellow Vancouverite here. What is your current opinion of the C200? I'm currently looking to move away from my BMPCC 6k G2, and really like the idea of a C200, but also looking at FX3 and A7Siii as well. I mostly record YT videos, as well as corporate interviews and talking head work. Would you still recommend the C200 for this, or would you look at newer Canon/Sony cameras in 2023? Also, have you heard of a C200 mk ii coming out?

If you need full size xlr and autofocus I would buy a used C200. But for what you are talking about any of those cameras could be good. The FX3 and BMPCC G2 are great options. Used C200s are cheap for what they do but it’s either bad 8bit video or great 12bit 4K with high data rates. I only shoot raw even for big videos but to get smaller codecs I transcode to prores LT. Also the C70 is the C200mkII.

Does c200 have 10bit raw 24p 25p 30p options too ? Or just 10bit 60p ?

You don't have to be coming from mirrorless for C70 to be a better choice, I'm coming from C200 and C70 is way better camera for me and for most people spending under $10k for a camera. Bigger cameras and rigging are better in big crew situations, and in those situations you will probably rent/own a Red or Alexa, or C500 mark II. For music videos, corporate work, short films, commercials, weddings and events, everything people who buy sub $10k cameras do, C70 is way better camera. 422/10bit in C70 is better than C200 raw, miniXLR is exactly the same thing as a big one, you just need different cables or just an adapter cable, and you can really live without SDI, I'm using C200 for 3 years and I've never used SDI port even once, I'm a single operator and I don't need 3 monitors on my camera, and most people don't, but many people just mimic what Hollywood does and complicate things for no reason. With the C70 and a loupe you even have the best EVF on the market, way better than C200 one. People should scale down for their production level and budget, and for that, you don't need Vmounts, follow focuses and matte boxes, that's just slowing you down and if you use a sub $10k camera, speed on a set is everything, and that's why C70 is better for probably 99% of users. The only reason to buy C200 right now is when you find a used one for $3000, but if you compare them directly, C200 has no chance.

I agree with some of this, but it's important to remember that not everyone has the same needs when it comes to production.

@@BenSchubert It's exactly what I tried to explain. People use the wrong workflows, I know many one man band people who think C200 is better than C70 because it has SDI and big XLRs and that's hilarious. Too many people are new to this and in a lack of experience they just copy Hollywood, or copy what other people do who already copied Hollywood, and that's why we have people buy full on RAW cameras for $1500 to do $300 jobs. If you use a $1500 camera you definately don't need raw and even don't have skills to use that potential which raw gives you,. And definately cannot justify the time you need to spend for the raw workflow. People have to scale down everything according to their workflow and budget, buying a $1500 raw camera and slapping on follow focuses, matte boxes and Vmount batteries is only making your workflow worse because you're not Hollywood, that workflow is made for 5 people just operating the camera. That's why for the price there is nothing similar to C70 and anyone buying sub $10k camera shouldn't think about anything else, C70 is better even than C300 mark III for small productions, it's the perfect balance for the type of jobs it will be used and more importantly for the bugets. C200 cannot compare directly to C70, it's great only because it costs almost half the price on a used market.
