You have to replace your weather stripping. That is why the car is leaking number one. Your temperature is running 235°. People will tell you from the Corvette world that that is normal, but you can bring that temperature down by cleaning out the leaves between your radiator and your condenser you have to take the upper shroud off. Look down inside and clean out those leaves.
@catboi11885 ай бұрын
Yeah that's normal because the computer is programmed to turn the cooling fans on very late so putting around in city traffic will make it heat up...this can be remedied by wiring up a toggle switch to ground the relay for like $5 that way you can turn them on at will
@Orrinwellsbigo5 ай бұрын
@@catboi1188 Maximum coolant temperature is 236°. After that, it starts to boil and it's no longer useful. There is a high temp coolant. It's $50 a pop. It also helps to open up the top part shroud of your radiator housing and clean out all the leaves in between the Radiator and condenser.
@catboi11885 ай бұрын
@@Orrinwellsbigo yes sometimes there can be debris dude but what he's talking about is normal operating temperature for these cars I don't know why you keep bringing up the debris ..Jesus Christ... GM programed the ECU to turn the fans on at 230 or 235 for emissions
@catboi11885 ай бұрын
@@Orrinwellsbigo I mean this dudes not exactly tech savvy your comments going to make him think there's something wrong with his car when it's not the case these cars were designed to run at that temperature to lower emissions
@Orrinwellsbigo5 ай бұрын
@catboi1188 We don't have to worry about those emissions anymore. You can delete the Smog pump. Keep the coolant bypass system. Keep the EGR valve and the cats and upgrade to a triple core with a 180° thermostat. 195° is the most efficient temperature for all running vehicles.

I have owned both a red 1986 Corvette and a red 1989 Corvette. I bought the '86 to use as a daily driver for a round trip commute of 65 miles living is southern PA. That worked out very well for me and I did that for a year. Someone made me an offer for the car that I could not pass up, so I sold it. That's why a couple of years later, dearly missing the car I sold, I bought the '89 Corvette. Unfortunately the '89 was not as solid as my '86, but I wish you the best and hopefully it will perform as you desire.

in just two months of ownership on my 87, i already had one headlight motor go out, rear lift hatch went out, digital dash power supply went out, temp gauge sending unit went out, coolant leak, and weatherstripping leaks bad. GREAT CAR SO FAR ! - ITS KILLING ME AT ONLY 58000 MILES,,,,,,,,,,,

On my 1989 C4 the temp will climb to 230-234 then the fan kicks on and it drops to 210 ish and this cycle continues. Normal operating temps for the L98. Put a new radiator cap on it factory spec.

I own a 86 pace car convertible. Mine only gets droven in good weather. Since it only drives on nice days, i removed the thermostat, runs around 150 to 200 constantly. Reason i don't drive mine in weather, mine was under water for 3 months, then sat on the side of a pole barn for 3 years, it's seen enough weather.

Looks like a clean C4 you got there, I had an 86 convertable a few years ago and regret selling it so now Im looking at an 85 with only 30000original miles, these cars sometimes get a bad rap but for the money they are a great value, just enjoy it and keep it well maintained, and as far as the leak goes, the old rubber seals crack with age so just replace em.

The Red Corvette looks very nice, i'm sure it will be quite enjoyable....350 lb-ft of torque at like 3000 rpm. The little Miata is cool too...I remember back in the day some car magazine said the Miata handled like "a Rat in Reeboks" lots of grip & very toss-able. Car and Driver called the Miata Top Ten All Time sports cars...Road & Track said the Miata was The King of ALL Sports Cars... Have fun! Would be interesting to see how the vette & miata handle in comparison.

Most corvettes of that era overheat Camaros as well those cars have a thermostat that’s designed to open up in the mid 200s a high performance thermostat that engages at 180° would be a good upgrade that’s what GM should have done from the beginning

The tpi does typically run hot. Takes nothing to hit 230 when sitting in traffic. Just keep your guages flipped over on coolant temp and make sure it doesnt climb. Coolant flush wouldnt hurt though.

Aaaaand a new radiator cap, or check it to see if it seals and holds 16-20 psi. I heard about a parade of Vettes once, of course parades go slow, nearly every one overheated.
@marknelson35616 ай бұрын
With the mods I can see you probably have 290-300 hp with the headers, air pump delete,it probably has a performance chip and k&n filter. Check to see if it has the original catalytic converter. You can replace it with a hi flow cat and gain another 20 hp. I put a pipe in place of the converter and noticed a big difference in hp.

@@The_Yung_Enthusiast i agree, but there is nothing like driving a red corvette convertible down here in Fl almost all year long. Nothing says American made and living the Ameican dream. Mine is not nice as yours. I actually bought my corvette back from the guy i sold it to back in the day. I was able to buy it back before State Farm totaled it out. It was a victum of Hurrcane Irma. A tree limb went threw the back vinyl window. There was 2 inches of water on the floorboards and in the cubbies behind the sests. My ABS module was under water. Not many can say they were able to buy back there first corvette back. I remember back in the day when i had a poster of a red 88 convertible on the wall. I said" 1 day". That was 1989. I bought my 88 in 1998. The exact car that was on the poster. Cant get more American than a Corvette. Ill be honest. Last year i turned 50. My wife agreed to let me buy a new vette. Mostly to celebrate reaching my goals in real estate. I test drove a 2023. I couldnt pull the trigger. Something about a C4. I wouldnt say im a Corvette nut. Driving and owning a C4 is good enough for me. Im glad your enjoying your car as well. Sorry for the rant
