Jon Harshman thanks for this video. Repairing this is beyond what I am capable of. (I’m sure I could break it and get it figured out eventually but don’t want to chance it) I am having a bad fuel smell in my garage with no noticeable leaks on the floor. Sounds like this may be my same issue. 2007 z06. Does this mean if I call the dealer, the coverage adjustment may apply to me? I didn’t want to have to pay a huge price to get this fixed. Thanks.

​@@MrGflan I have the same smell but only after fill up...I have been wondering if its the crossover pipe leaking when both tanks are full. Then when the level goes down there is no more fuel in the crossover pipe. Any ideas on that?

Rhino M. I had Chevy look at it. It was exactly this situation. The “hat” was leaking out fuel. I got it fixed. $1400 ugghh

Rhino M. Yeah that is it. I talked to a lot of unbiased folks about it. If you get the smell it’s a pretty good chance that is the cause. Whether you want to live with it is your choice. I didn’t like the idea of it being a safety hazard or at the very least having it spit fuel and lose fuel on the road

Thank you for posting your comment. I have a 2008 ZO6, at 49,000 mi, the smell of gas started. I've never overfilled any of the cars I've owned. My smell happens every time I bring it home. Doesn't matter how much gas is in the tank. I know you posted maybe 12 days ago, if you come across anything if you could reply here I'd appreciate it, and if you don't that's okay, I'm just glad that other people such as yourself are leaving comments.!

@SQ_TierHog A world certified mechanic who is also a retired lead corvette mechanic from a local Chevrolet Dealership inspected my plastic gas cap and said it was good. He also said that GM used cheap plastic fuel pump sending unit that is faulty and causing the smell. He said the exhaust system had to be removed, remove cross member, remove the transmission in the rear end, remove the gas tank to change the fuel pump sending unit. For $2026.00 I about shit a brick. Fortunately, after I got the car back home, it does not smell like gas anymore. I think I must have nit screwed the cap on correctly. Take off the cap and reinstall to see if that fix the problem.. Good Luck!

@@terrywix6844 thank you! Oh my gosh, all that work! I'll try the gas cap. But, today, I smelled the driver side when well, gas smell, right side, nothing. I fear the worst. I'm very mechanically inclined, but...all that to be pulled? Dunno if I wanna deal with that, I'm 60. Lol. I'm in California, I want to avoid dealers, gonna try and find a Vette mechanic. Never done this, but I'll get a hold of a local Corvette club first, see who they recommend. 2,000 for you, but at least you found a great, trustworthy mechanic! Thank you again, I will pop that gas cap, maybe pull off the wheel-well cover, might get lucky with a leaking hose, lol.

Update: I only tank up 2/3 full and can’t smell anything … Chevy wanted north of 2k for the fix

Man that’s awesome. At the time I made this video, GM was pretty much denying this issue and dealers were selling people complete fuel tanks and basically whacking people upside the head in service. Some guys on corvetteforum had started a thread getting people to file tsb complaints concerning this issue. I was one of them. That thread and this video I had made documenting the issue made it pretty hard for GM to ignore. Not long after, they started sending out those notices that you had posted. Since I had done the work myself and had purchased my part through my commercial account, I felt it would have been more work than it was worth to get my money back on the part. Cost me around $300 if I recall but cost many people thousands before that extension letter was sent out. I’m not bitter about it, but I do wish they would have owned up to it sooner. What’s still frustrating is that it wasn’t just corvettes. I’m a mechanic and see this problem across the GM line. Camaros, cobalts, impala, pontiac g5 and g6, etc all had this same sub par plastic. You walk by a GM vehicle around this era of production and smell gas, this is the problem. I still see it in parking lots often. I feel like we got a good movement going because of the noise we were making about it but GM really didn’t step up as much as they should have. Just enough to squelch the most vocal.

That's ridiculous. I was aware that there was a time limit that they were going to extend coverage, but it's pretty sh*tty of them to keep it so short. On the other hand, I'm glad they at least tried... If I were you I would get it to a reputable performance shop in the area and ask them to install the latest Z06 pump. My pump that's in the vid is a Z06 pump. I didn't cover that in the vid though. It's not that I requested a Z06 pump, but the latest update happened to be a Z06/XLR pump. At least that's what that purple tag on the fuel inlet line said.

@@robmccance hey, i had to replace the entire fuel module. luckily i purchased an extended warranty from the dealership and they reimbursed me for the whole thing. $2800 fuel module replacement. hope all is well.

Definitely! It should have been a RECALL but it was covered up by GM. They used the GM Special Coverage Adjustment #15682 to get around notifying all owners of the potential defect. It probably saved them millions of dollars in recall repairs. Unfortunately, it is a dangerous fuel supply problem caused by a defective design. More people should report this to NHTSA.dot.gov and maybe a recall will be posted!

It smells worse after fill up because fuel is phsyically above the level of the 'Hat' and therefore weeping out. Notice the tank extends above the flange mount when totally full. Roh G H my man!

Likewise on my 2005 I Need to get it fixed. Although being a female taking it to dealer they going to want to double my price 😢. I know some what about Mechanics but I wouldn’t be able to fix mine. In Phoenix, Az any suggestions

Yes. It is not a full recall, but they do have a service notice out for the fuel smell caused by a leak near the fill cap. Your dealer will know about it. He will want you to pay $125 to diagnose, but if it IS the designated problem, they give that back. It is bull.

Bill Arnold- yes sir I got my letter a few months ago. We had a big push on Corvette Forum to get GM to recognize this issue and goodwill the replacement. This video as well as many reports to the NHTSA from forum members helped bring light to the problem. Glad you got your issue resolved. This raw fuel smell can be a big problem when you park the car in the garage.

Yeah I’m having this same issue and I tried to explain this to Chevy multiple times and the lady I was dealing with seemed clueless. Of course she said they won’t fix it, because it’s not related to the fuel cap bulletin. I tried to explain it wasn’t the fuel cap, she seemed really confused. What was the bulletin or special advisory number?

The dealer close to me was able to look it up. It has to be reported to them prior to the car reaching 10 years in service. I'll ask for the bulletin number when I go in Monday. My 08 base was manufactured in June of 08 so I should be covered.
