Songfacts®: "Minnie the Moocher" was written by the famous band leader, jazz composer and singer Cabell "Cab" Calloway III, and the jazz music publisher Irving Mills. It was first recorded in 1931 by Cab Calloway and His Orchestra, and became their signature song for the next decade. Beloved by audiences, "Minnie the Moocher" earned Calloway the nickname "The Hi De Hi De Hi Man" based on his unique form of scatting in the song. The song tells the sad story of a "red hot hoochie coocher" girl called Minnie. The hoochie coochie was a style of belly dancing with non-respectable gypsy origins, and was considered lecherous at the time. The licentious Minnie gets involved with a "kokie" conveniently called Smokey, a "kokie" being someone who takes cocaine. Smokey takes her down to Chinatown where he introduces her to opium, which is what Calloway meant when using the jive expression "to kick the gong around" in the lyrics. The rest of the song describes her opium-induced wish-fulfillment fantasy in which the king of Sweden gives her many gifts, including "a diamond car, with the puh-latinum wheels." Calloway doesn't tell us how this story ends, but he does wail "Poor Min! Poor Min" Poo-oor Min" at the end, which may be an indication that Minnie's a goner.

Most people today don't know that Cab Calloway was phenomenally popular in his day. First black American to sell a million records of a song. First black musician to have a national syndicated radio program. Thank to the Blues Brothers movie, he has now been seen by more generations of people.
@thatonedud83253 жыл бұрын
He would’ve been 1 of the first because OKeh released Mamie Smith's Crazy Blues in 1921, the first record by a black artist to sell a million copies
@trainliker1003 жыл бұрын
@@thatonedud8325 That number for Crazy Blues is not agreed to by everybody. Some say over a million, some say not verified. It probably isn't verifiable because of the record keeping back then. Cab Calloway's was in 1931 and probably better record keeping by then. Time magazine did research and made a list that shows Calloway, but they only went back as far as 1923 (unfortunately) when Time Magazine was launched. So I suspect that Crazy Blues is an open question unless there is some authoritative source. Whether or not over a million, an extremely significant record to be sure. Of course the RIAA exists now, but didn't start giving out their awards until 1958. So no help there.
@thatonedud83253 жыл бұрын

@trainliker1003 жыл бұрын
@@thatonedud8325 There can only be one "first". The Ink Spots didn't even make their first recording until 1935. And while Satchmo had a great early career, I don't think he had a million seller until the 1960's.

1:59 Cab Calloway has officially spoken 9.5 syllables/sec, which was not broken for VERY long after that(and then at 2:01 he spoke so fast he was surprised that the orchestra could keep up) and then in the end he gave the trombone(or whatever instrument was that) player a 'you win' because he could not do that surprisingly low voice as much as the trombone player 💀and then he gave another man a hi-five(in 1931)
