I was honored to ride along with Engineer Ed Dickens, Fireman Austin Barker, and several other lucky train fans in the cab on the Union Pacific 4014 "Big Boy" locomotive as it traveled from Pine Bluffs, WY back to its home base in Cheyenne, WY on July 3, 2023 as a guest of the Union Pacific Railroad Museum. It was a thrill of a lifetime!
I have so much respect and admiration for Ed, Austin, and the rest of the Union Pacific Steam Team crew who have worked so hard to rebuild and maintain this amazing piece of American history. Every UP employee I met that day was professional, patient, and friendly as I asked endless questions about the 4014 and its operations. Big thanks to all of them - and the rest of the UP who work every day to keep our nation moving.
Special thanks Patricia LaBounty and Vanessa Dobles at the UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD MUSEUM in Council Bluffs, IA for coordinating this event. The museum leadership and staff are committed to the mission of sharing American History through the lens of the railroad - connecting generations who have been impacted by Union Pacific.
