As a kid I enjoyed the Money Money number as well as this Two Ladies and One Man as well as The Pastoral Song and If You Can See Her plus all the other number. Then I became an adult and the whole movie took a different meaning. With enlightened mind, I felt sad, mad and guilty as none of these numbers were to laugh at. This is still a great musical with a sinister undertone.

I was probably 8 or 9 when I first saw this movie sometime in the 80s…I only really only liked the parts he was in, probably because I hadn’t learned about the Holocaust yet, and romance wasn’t a thing yet for me so… I should have been scared, but my 8 year old loves Trevor Henderson and SCPs and Bleach, maybe we’re just weird…well at least I am for sure and don’t mind too much.

It's interesting how the movie version of the song makes it more about the possibility of the main characters going for a polyamorous relationship by adding another man, making it two men and one lady in their scenario; While as I understand it the stage version has it mainly about the two leads becoming roommates

In my opinion, the so-called "darker" emcees are actually *less* threatening. Joel's darkness is subtle and subversive. It creeps in without you even realizing it, but it leaves an imprint that is impossible to erase.

It's a debatable point. Siskel and Ebert called it a "movie musical" - but then they also called "Saturday Night Fever" one as well.
@OreadNYC
@OreadNYC 2 жыл бұрын
In all fairness, the film version of "Cabaret" is only very loosely based on the original musical in the sense that it incorporates songs from the musical and uses them in context (as stage performances in the cabaret). It's not a musical in the usual sense given that apart from the Emcee and Sally, the characters do not "speak" in song but all songs represent literal musical performances in the plot (as they do in "Victor/Victoria"). The plot of the film borrows heavily from the play "I Am A Camera" which like "Cabaret" is based on the experiences of British writer Christopher Isherwood in 1930s Berlin.
@ializarg
@ializarg 2 жыл бұрын
@@OreadNYC I've had a couple of discussions with cinephiles about whether "Cabaret" is a musical movie or not and about the use of diegetic musicand what this implies in the definition of a movie. We never reached an agreement. For me it is NOT a musical in the strict sense of the term. For others it is.
