The Cabs, down to one active member, have returned with their first album in 26 years, and... it's a lot more credible and enjoyable than I was expecting. (Also featuring another excessively long In Brief segment.)

Stephen Mallinder WAS involved in Cabaret Voltaire on all of their last three albums together as a duo. (‘Plasticity’ / ‘International Language’ / ‘The Conversation’) Even though there were no vocals on the recordings, they did perform versions of tracks from the albums live with Mallinder’s vocals, including tracks from ‘The Conversation’ album. I highly recommend Mallinder’s solo album, ‘Um Dada’, released in 2019. And if you haven’t heard them, Wrangler - a band featuring Mallinder, Benge, and Phill Winter - is worth checking out, too.

YES YES YES! I had all but completely forgotten that Kirk had revived the Cabaret Voltaire name until I saw the thumbnail for this and was really hoping that this wasn't a disaster and, thank goodness, it wasn't! Although their early work was my first love, I've always been really fond of the Cabs' late material, with warm memories of listening to The Conversation on my tiny iPod Nano in some abysmal bitrate when I was in middle school in between listening to Current 93 and They Might Be Giants (my tastes remain similarly eclectic). Their choice of synth tones on those later albums and the janky distorted drum machines of their early work, combined with the wild soundplay of Coil's '90s output, have probably had more of an impact on my taste in electronic dance music than I can fully account for. My one very minor qualm, if you can call it that, is that you skipped over Three Mantras in the In Brief segment, which I always thought was considered a mainline release. At the same time, though, it can kind of be summarised as a more abstract version of the sound they would refine on Red Mecca but with two really long songs instead of a bunch of shorter ones, and while very cool, it feels more like a forty-minute EP or maxi-single than a proper album per se.

Great job, Tommy. As others say and I suggested long ago...Skinny Puppy. If you like Cabs.... But also...what about Front 242? No other band had such an influence on my life, as they were the ones that inspired me to make music myself. I think you'd appreciate or even like quite a lot of it.

Thanks for the overview on their discography. Cabaret Voltaire is a band I've been hearing about for years, and I am fully aware of their legacy and the influence they've had on so many artists that I am already into. You have reminded me to dive in and explore their catalogue, so thank you!

I saw the video for "sensoria" on my old school tv in 1985 on a show called "Night Flight." My twin brother and I figured out how to get the USA channel by placing the channel turn knob in between channels. This shit blew me away. I guess I was in 8th grade or something and was digging egyptian lover and suicidal tendencies at the time. I went to the record store (Mirabelli's Music in Park Lane Mall in Reno) but didn't know how to shop for vinyl. That seems silly now, but c'mon I was in 8th grade. I wound up taking home "Mix-Up." I loved it. And the original pressing of "Nag Nag Nag." I loaned the nag 12" to a DJ. Don't ever EVER do that. Never saw that slab again. Meanwhile, ministry, coil, the tear garden, skinny puppy, sisters of mercy, metallica, R.K.L. , Dr. Know, 45 Grave, front line assembly, and Front 242 were all happening at the same time. Throbbing Gristle, Christian Death, ..... And all the rest as well. The cabs steal a sweet spot in my heart every fucking time. Mal's (now 2 solo records), the Wrangler projects and RHK's many many solo records in various monikers have kept me in the loop as to where these dudes are. I cannot get enough. Shadow of Fear is a weird record for me to listen to in so much as I just wanted the cabs to be sorta done by now. But I love this record, and do hear the cabs spirit. I feel lucky to add this title to my cabaret voltaire collection

Laid Back is probably cheesiest, but it's still something I enjoy! What I really love, though was when they went totally instrumental. A lot of their old stuff was pretty solid and original. There's nothing like it! Probably one of my top faves, especially looking at their entire career(s).

"Showed all it's best ideas in the first two minutes." This has always been a CabVolt tendency. LOL! But don't get me wrong, I've been big fan since the mid-80s, when "I Want You" broke on WFNX, Boston!

@@oleksandrbyelyenko435 That was the first one I got when it came out. I liked it cause it was crazy, and I was young then, 1989, I think it was the beginning of their 90’s sound. Kinda too harsh for me. But I have to say a lot of those intros and builds on Too Dark Park are very cinematic.

Excellent review. A couple of noteworthy albums omitted, however, and if you haven't heard them, I recommend them. "Percussion Force" and "Colours" which take the "Groovy, Laidback..." direction into more Techno/Rave direction. These fit before "Body and Soul". Just FYI

For me Kirk´s best solo work are his two albums on Warps (Virtual State and The Numer Of Magic) and his albums as Sandoz. Releasing solo work as Cabaret Voltaire is a bit of a gimmick, but whatever garners some interest for him is great. That bein said, I think that the album is a bit of a dud. CV were always about going forward and this spot-the-classic-drum-machine approach on the new album is all about going back. I don´t need nostalgia from Cabaret Voltaire. Oh, and I do like their house album and I´m glad you dig it too.

Hey have you heard of Shackleton at all? He makes a lot of UK bass stuff but incorporates it with a lot a organic and tribal instrumentation. You should give _Music for the Quiet Hour / The Drawbar Organ EPs_ a listen, I think you'll like it!

Hope people dont send rocks at my face but 2X45 isnt announced as "two x fourty five" it's "two times fourty five." I got in a similar discourse with a coder about mac OSX. He decided it was announced as O-S-X (like o sex) and not it's true designation as Mac's 10th iteration of their operating system. The reason I claim humbly that the cabs 2x45 is two times 45 is that there are 2 slabs of vinyl played at 45rpm. Btw... I have no idea how to actually spell 40.

Chris Watson Cabaret Voltaire is the best...I like a lot of stuff they did after, but none of it even approaches what they did then. Mallinder's record from a few years ago was better than pretty much everything that wasn't The Conversation since 1982. RHK's stuff since they weren't really a band is OK but not worth paying money for. Not clear why he would still use the name given that the music is humorless.
