For educational uses only: I made this video to study the acting of Ernest Borgnine who played a role of a prisoner in the 1981 film Escape From New York directed by John Carpenter.

I've heard it said, and it seems implied in between the lines when Cabbie says twice "I've been driving this cab for 30 years," that he loved New York so much that he chose not to leave even when it was walled off, and turned into a prison. But, I think you could always find someone who'd stay in the worst place because they see a charm to the place whether it was Detroit, and or San Francisco's Tenderloin District.

In the novelization it’s is said that he stored his cab in a garage when NY was going to be walled off and when he got sent in he went back to it to find it undisturbed. If you’re a fan of this movie I highly recommend the novelization of it by Michael McQuay. They go deeper into what happened at Leningrad, Bob Hauk, and more of the deportation center such as the sterilization chamber.

@@HeyClutch Thank you for this. Ever since I first saw this film, I'd always wondered what a guy like Cabbie did to deserve New York. Ya, I'd agree that he stayed by choice or got left behind. I'd bet most of the older "bums" were afterthoughts or the elderly the government didn't want to be bothered with. As for Maggie, I always envisioned her backstory as a political prisoner. Maybe she was part of the National Liberation Front?

I can't believe it took me THIS long to realize that Twisted Metal flat out stole this character for Charlie Kane - driver of Yellow Jacket. He even has molotov cocktails as a Special Weapon.

0:20 well at least some prisoners are trying to keep Broadway alive, even prisoners like them know that New York was once a great city with many unforgettable Broadway musicals, and those musical shows were some of the best things about New York

3:40 I got a strange chain of associations in my mind from this when later on "Duke" uses the president himself as a target for his shooting amusement, and in real life, an Iraqi tried to throw a shoe at George W. Bush, but Bush Jr. skillfully dodged the hit, whereas Trump just turned his head.
