The Wooded Beardsman

Digging and setting the foundation for a small tiny off-grid cabin in the Canadian forest. We will use only hand tools including shovels, pick axes and pry bars, to dig pillars that will hold up the first floor framing joists for the tiny house. We are now working on the outhouse: • Building Outhouse at O...
Later will will us the Norwood Portable Sawmill to turn dead standing trees into lumber, which is the goal of this build; use materials around us to create something beautiful.
This whole series is about building an all-seasons cabin that will house more than a few people. The idea is team-work, use of tools, hand tools and power tools when possible to construct something great that will bring us closer to nature and provide balance to our lives that we so desperately crave.
This isn't about escaping the rat race, this is about getting close to things that help us get balance in our lives. Too much of anything, including isolation is horrible for the soul.
In this series we use materials around us to construct a small forest cabin.
We'll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low.
Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings.
In episode 1, we dig in our "foundation" from reclaimed pressure treated 6x6 posts, level, and set the lower foundation in place which will then accept the first floor of the cabin.

To be honest I am so envious of this entire build. The craftsmanship to have everything come out so well and to have the Norwood sawmill was amazing. Using your own trees is a huge cost savings. Watched this a few times. Something I always wanted to do. I have 10 acres of this dream also. As far as negative comments, consider it jealousy. You all know what you are doing. Sorry, I am not into the hunting thing at all. I searched cabin build and glad I found your build. Great job, good luck, and please consider more of these series 👍🏻 Thank you!

You should make it a catch-and-cook. Catch and cook log cabin. It was only a matter of time, with you eating the bark off of trees. With your appetite and tenacity, you could give Canada it's worse housing shortage ever.... Now that that's out of my system, I want to say I absolutely love watching this, and wish I could do the same. Lots of cedar where I am, but only the small ones are dead standing; so the best I can do is make benches.

I'd make you one, but getting it there would be some undertaking. And I had to make mine with hand tools, so you could probably churn out a dozen yourself before I get even one done. If I knew how to, I'd send you a pic; it turned out pretty well considering I built it with the same principles as you're making your cabin with. Eyeballing and guesstimation.

What I do for my foundations is where your posts would be, dig out a depression about 2ft deep where Your posts would be. Line the bottom of the pit with old carpet and fill with gravel. Then, I either use big stones and drill a hole into it to epoxy in a metal connector to support floor beams. Or I make large concrete blocks that look like large stones. I place the metal connector into the concrete. Place these on top of your drainage pit and start building up your floors once everything is levelled out. Using the metal connectors stops wood from absorbing moisture from the soil / concrete and will double the life span of your building. Frost up heave is definitely a thing but is completely hyped up. I almost think it's a conscpiracy by the construction-industrial complex. I'm thinking of my grand fathers farms house that lasted over 100 years and was only sitting on maybe 200 bricks. Then the important thing is to grade around the house properly also have a large roof over hang. I prefer low-ish roof slopes 4-12 so I can get large over hangs.

Nice addition to your channel. I am also planning a build, it will be from some sawn material on my band mill but will also incorporate natural material in the form of birch bark, sod, clay, rived and sawn shake/shingles, not aiming for 40 years but hundreds of years, well you know... a long time. Dig a trench and fill it with loose rock with a drain pipe in the bottom, its called a rubble trench, then just put your sill on top of the rubble it won't move and if it does it won't be much. Looking forward to what you guys do here. Safety Sallies I won't do that unless something blatant shows up. That Suzuki skiddah! You have to love dead standing cedar, its the best, your cedar looks good and sound too, no rot hollow butts.

The fact that the Suzuki baby truck/car pulled that lumber all the way out of there or the fact that you pulled it by the trunk latch and it held on cuz those things are barely put on by two little screws.
