What would we do without KZfaq . I enjoy learning new tips and tricks from yourself and other talented ladies. My question today…. Most of my cable work is between a rib waistband and a rib neck band. Do you have any videos explaining what compensations need to happen here?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 2 жыл бұрын
At the bottom, I don;t generally compensate, because you can always use that little extra flare around your hips. At the neck or the shoulders, I doo use the compensation method as to keep the neck from stretching out, or the shoulders stretching too much.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2019. GENIUS. Suzanne, you are exceptional. I'm gonna try this tonight. I feel so excited and encouraged to KNIT with confidence. I've got a question for you please. The pattern says, rib for 2 inches for sleeve, front and back and then follow cable pattern. Do I have to rib less stitches and then compensate with the cable pattern? A little confused. Your advise and help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million for this fantastic video. Thanks for sharing and caring. Hugs.

Yes you can, but I would reduce them by half using the same method! In other words, I would re-order the stitches in the same type of fashion. Thanks, Linda!

Would you recommend increasing the Needle size for this bind off to avoid a tight bind off or is that not necessary because of the inherent stretchiness of the cable bind off?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 5 жыл бұрын
You can definitely use a larger needle.

Love your videos!! Question...what is the reduction rule of thumb when going from cables to stockinette or rib? I think I was told to reduce on the last cable row by the number of sts in each cable. i.e. A 12 st cable could have 6 crossed sts, therefore you would reduce the 12 sts to 6. What are your thoughts about this?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with your statement. It is usually ½ the number of stitches, but depends on the cable. I always swatch a bit just to double check before trying on my garment.

Thanks, I’m knitting my first cable scarf, and I am concerned about blocking it. I don’t want to stretch it out too much because I don’t want to flatten the cables too much. Do you have any tips about blocking cable knits as well? I really appreciate your series about cable flare.
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 3 жыл бұрын
This blocking video does not include cables, but you would block them just like blocking the ribbing, which is in the video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a697hKakp8vYoIU.html 🧶

What do you do when you need to pick up and knit from such a bind off? Do you still pick up one for every (cable) stitch? (I'm thinking that would just re-establish the 'flare') Or do you pick up one for every bound off stitch?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is correct, you would be up one for each bound off stitch. Great question, Bronwen! ❤️

Till you get a video out on binding off cables of greater size than 2x2 I am trying this with 3x3 left leaning cables. What seems to be working is (and I am going to use a cable needle) to cross stitches 1 and 6 like this: Move stitches 1-2-3 to the cable needle as you would usually do holding it either in back or front according to cable direction. Move stitches 4-5-6 to right needle Move stiches 2 and 3 back onto left needle from cable needle Move stitch 6 to left needle from right needle Move stitch 1 to left needle from cable needle Move stitches 4 and 5 to left needle from right needle Now bind off pairs of stitches using either K2tog for right crossing cables ssk for left crossing cables. Other than my use of a cable needle is that how you would handle this? Is it always the middle two stitches that exchange places? I know you are extremely busy (!) so please don't reply if you are under an avalanche of work. I can wait for the video if you ever make one for this. It just seemed like something that might come up for other people too.

I am looking for a video on how to BO and do the cable. As I am working a neck and have to BO 14 stitches then 5 st in 2 rows etc. not BO all st on the same row. So when I go across there are less st than the original cable (cable was 9 st then after needing BO down to 5 vs BO the whole row.)
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 2 жыл бұрын
I would work up a swatch to try first. You can try a couple of things. Use your pattern directions for decreasing over the two rows prior to BO. You could also try my technique. If you have a cable with 9 stitches, and you need to end up with 5, it is very doable. Of course if you do it in the bind off row, you will need to work those prior rows without the decreases. This is what I would do. If your cable it leaning to the right, I would create pairs of stitches, just as in this video, matching the 1st and 6th st, the 2nd and 7th st, then place the 5th st, then the 3rd and 8th stitch and the 4th and 9th stitches together, then work them as k2tog twice, k1, k2tog twice. If the cable is leaning to the left, you would reverse this order. Let me know what your results show. For me, this is very tidy.

How to handle larger cables (3x3, 4x4) and braided cables?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 5 жыл бұрын
Good idea. I will add this to my video todo list. In the meantime, I usually decrease the cable legs by ½, and try to follow the direction that they would normally go. So I incorporate k2togs, ssks, and other decreases in a way that follows the natural flow of the cable. I hope this makes sense. Happy knitting!

Terrific video as usual. You are my knitting heroine. :) I wonder if you could do a video on ways of blending decreases into cables such as at a v neckline or in a cardigan. I found another video maker today - Roxanne Richardson (or "Roxy Rocks" on Ravelry) - who covered this in great detail here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7Z8mMmHp6zPp2w.html but I would love to see your take on the subject.
