The sound of a 600 HP, 18 litre CAT 3408 V8 working hard. Gross train weight was 79 tonnes or 174,000 lbs.
We were hauling steel railway sleepers from Whyalla SA to country NSW, 1500 kms each way.

Nothing beats the sound of a cat 3408 I drove a 1979 kw hauling logs off highway in Canada Nothing beats a big cat for power and down low pulling off log landings. I hope the aussie's keep that big power alive forever

💯👍👍 and nothing beats an air starter sound on big inch V8 diesel. I've personally seen and heard a lot more air starters in Aussie trucks, then in N/America here. Not good for cold starting temperatures when you could quickly loose all your air. Beautiful truck and sound!!!

Seeing cabovers brings back memories over here in the USA🇺🇸. We use to have a mix of cabovers & conventional cabs back in the 1980s & down. Today we mostly have conventional cabs.
@AuMechanic

Enjoyed that, noticed the road sign said Clare and Crystal Brook. Did a few trips riding along in KW's Melb to Perth in the early 1980s, the driver (his nickname was "Digger") always went via Crystal Brook to Pt Pirie and avoided Adelaide. 2 of the trips was a KW Cummins and 1 trip a V8 Cat. Cat sounded good but after some days and nights of it constantly the quieter Cummins was nice. One trip we got to Eucla roadhouse with 3 of us in the group and one of the other Fridge trailer motors had low volts on the gauge and the load of berries and ice cream in the desert was looking doomed, the drivers were trying to figure out how to fix it no luck so I decided to volunteer being a 2nd year apprentice mechanic, they looked at me a 18yo kid laughed, one of them said may as well the loads nearly hit the max temp, so climbed up had a look, shorted to reg wire to bypass it and fridge motor alt started charging so it was a bad reg, told the driver to just short it for a while driving for about half hr and then unplug for a few hrs and should be enough to make Kewdale, being Diesel it was only for restarting not ignition so high volts was no problem just long enough to charge it. I got my HC when I was in Perth for a possible Perth to NW run job but went back to mechanics. Still got the HC but mid 50s now, a bit late to take up Truckin. Anyway some years later I'm at the cinema watching the movie Mad Max 1 and there is a scene where a bike rides head on into a Kenworth and I recognised the truck instantly, it was one of the trucks I did the Perth trips in, owned by "Mick T", same colors and the big circle with letters MT in it on the back of the trailer, I was blown away by that.

me,too,I liked that turbo whistle,that cat just idled that load like it was empty,wow,talk about some power, no strain at all,that s one torquey engine,I have to get one now, I thought my old Cummins was strong, but it wouldn't handle this load, certainly wouldn't hill it,like this cat in the video, could. I wonder what kind of power you could squeeze out of this engine if you ever needed any extra, impressive, to say the least.

+Robert Bockery.... Nor, a 12-71 Detroit, that is built to 840+ hp (on the dyno) and turning up to 2,850 rpms, either.... as mine were.... with dbl over 6X4's, 3:73's and also on tall 24.5's. Sure do miss the "good years" of trucking as an OO... when there was some real money to be made, especially in Heavy haul & OD.... Before they Deregulated everything in 1980... and every clown that thought they could be a "big rigger" and went out and bought a truck... and everyone started cutting rates... til they put themselves out of business, especially the garbage (produce) haulers. Oh Well !!... I agree, the V-8's (the newer E9 Macks and the 3408's of the era... in the US) were great engines (personally, I preferred the E-9) and sadly... an era gone by, but at least "we were there" when they were in their "hey day" and ruled the Brute Torque race. Cheers

Mercurybullet when will she be reasdy. Its been a year since your comment and im getting impatient. Please let us know in the comments when ya gonna post the sweet sound of this big V in your old Superliner. Iv got a 84 model R600 and am looking for a Superliner bonnet for when i start restoring her. Gotta relocate the cab backwards on the chassi about this much and raise it six inches or so. Plenty of room to play with as she had a twenty foot tray on her beforehand. She’ a long wheelbase girl and will have a decent size bunk on her. Im toying with the idea of dropping an old Detroit Silver 92 in place of the 350 inline six or even a non turbo 903. She aint gonna be a workink truck, iv got a K123 with a VT 993 in her for that. Love the big Cat V8 but the price of one and the cost to rebuild one is beyond belief. 60-70 grand. And they dont mind turning alot of diesl into that beaut sound and a bit of black smoke. The two sgroke Jimmies werent exactly known for good fuel economy either lol.

Absolute fantastic sound Mate - this is OZ and the outback in a nutshell. I still remember the dogfights I witnessed between helgaairhead the bike and any of theese 50 plus meters giants - going on for a whole day, often seeing myself and the bike beaten by one of the mighty Cats. I could hear them roring long before I could see them in my mirrors - then suddenly a wall behind me eager of passing on my right side. I’m running a 43l tank on helgaairhead - easily doing 750K before a refill. Then after battleing for hours - flat out to the next roadhouse getting here topped up and back att it chasing miles battleing the same roadtrain for the rest of the day. What a trip, country , people and the smell if the heat. I even met the roadtrains when doing Cape York which is a handfull of corrugations both up and down. Fantastic memories - I might catch another trip down under as I still have me R80GS-PD stored at my brother Pezz’s place. Thanx for posting M8t. Blessings from Norway👍

rode train very cool, hear in the US the railroad lobbies against allowing trucks to run heavier then 80k, but in SD i did 13 axial belly dumps licensed for 148,000. That the heaviest i have ever run hear in the US.
