Finally: the reconstruction of Ede-Wageningen: Arnhem - Utrecht VIRM 14/11/2022

Ede-Wageningen station is being reconstructed: the station area will be completely renovated. More information in the video when we get there. During this ride I drive through a decaying autumn landscape and we come across a number of beautiful trains. Enjoy watching!

It is 7 a.m. here, Señor Cabview. Normally I'm up at about 5 a.m. to see your video when posted. Obviously, I am not getting any younger. I am noticing more aches and pains in spite of coffee and powdered donuts. Could I possibly just hang out there in Ede-Wageningen (maybe pitch a tent) and get completely renovated myself? Thank you for a wonderful video! I would strongly support rebuilding a station so as to improve interchange between trains and buses. This something we hardly ever do in Britain.

Ede-Wageningen had ook een verbouwing nodig ja, alleen de manier waarop vind ik zelf dan wel weer minder. Leuke video weer!

There is an obvious sense of pride in good workmanship in everything I see here - the beautifully ballasted and neatly groomed track, the solid construction of the station platforms and building itself. HOWEVER, as someone before me has already pointed out, why aren't the station waiting areas for the passengers provided with decent shelters to protect against rain and snow in bad weather? Prorail and NS are doing a major reconstruction of this station, so why can't they include decent shelter for the passengers, who should not have to wait for their trains in rain and snow? My guess is everyone is expected to carry an umbrella - even so, a modern station should provide decent shelter, including protection from the hot sun in summer.

It looks like the reconstruction hasn't finished, there'll be more shelter. The station has one less track which may mean a smoother ride but it also means less operational flexibility.

It is not finished yet. There will be a large roof :-)

Once the station is finished (Q2 of 2024) it'll have a huge roof and the temporary shelters will be removed. And to be honest, as a person who travels through Ede-Wageningen twice a day, there's plenty of room for all the people that actually want a roof. Most people don't mind waiting in the rain as the service also runs 4 times an hour, so the wait is never more than 15 minutes.

Wageningen Ede zien er mooi uit. Niet veel overkapping over het spoor dus minder tocht. Dankjewel voor de mooie beelden. Arnhem cs vind ik futuristisch er uit ziet.

Laatste keer dat ik Ede Wageningen heb gezien als treinreiziger is zo'n 50 jaar geleden. Dit ziet er goed uit.

Dankjewel voor alweer een zeer mooie treinreis. Ik geniet van het groen. Vooral het eerste gedeelte van het traject. En ook erg mooi is de passage door station Oosterbeek. Erg mooi.

I hope these VIRMs never will retire, I love the design and especially the bagpipes sound 🥰🎶... thank you as always for your great work here! reconstruction of Ede-Wageningen: I highly appreciate all work of improvement! It's a good idea to minimise shaking passengers due to cross over switches... I believe when work is finished it's a much better station. What I saw in some rebuild scenic it's a very nice improvement in the station hall too... so great job of all who are working on it 👍

Ede Wageningen was echt een heel depressief station en had je altijd het gevoel alsof er drugs werden verkocht in de stationstunnel is dit nieuwe station echt mooi geworden

Heel leuk dat nieuwe station, totdat je naar Ede moet en op de hele corridor Den Haag Centraal - Arnhem geen treinen rijden vanwege onderhoud :p shoutout naar ProRail ;)

Dat is altijd noodzakelijk en wordt zo goed mogelijk in rustige periodes gepland.

@@CabviewHolland Dr ligt dubbelspoor, er zijn meer dan genoeg landen waar enkelspoor de norm is. Vergt meer planning en een lagere capaciteit maar alsnog beter dan als er helemaal niets rijdt. :)

Erg jammer dat het oude gesloopt wordt. Straalde echt NS uit en mooi klassiek. Met de gigantische overkapping denk ik dat het minder knus voelt en best kil.

als je ziet hoe langzaam een trein de autos op de snelweg inhaalt dan was het leuker geweest als het spoor net een max snelheid had van 160-180 ipv 140.

Tussen 1999 en 2008 ben ik als onderhoudstechnicus regelmatig voor ProRail op station Edw geweest. Omroep, afstand-stuursystemen, uurwerken, CTA's, etc. Ik zou het een behoorlijke vooruitgang vinden, als het stationsgebouw en de perronoverkappingen straks zijn vernieuwd. Van wat ik uit de ProRail impressie kon opmaken, gaan ze er iets moois van maken. Het werd ook tijd...

Met de verbouwing van Ede-Wageningen verdween de laatste kruiswissel waar nog met 140 km/h in 1 van de rechte richtingen overheen gereden werd, of überhaupt nog sneller in een rechte richting dan 80 km/h.

Hoewel ik geen fan ben van strakke moderne stations, met vaak weinig overkapping of beschutting, vind ik dat ze bij DB wel een lesje kunnen leren wat betreft de staat van onderhoud van stations.

Station Ede-Wageningen krijgt nog veel overkapping, mooi houten daken. Ik kom vaak met de trein in Duitsland: die stations zijn vaak bijzonder verouderd, grauw, met roest en gebroken ramen. De Nederlandse stations liggen er meestal erg goed bij.

Excellent goede video, mr Cabview. Hoewel er in Nederland een boel oude stations zijn gesloopt zijn er nu nieuwe station bijgekomen waarvan ik zeg: nou dit had beter gekund. In deze video het vernieuwde station Ede-Wageningen een oud collega (helaas niet meer onder ons)zou zeggen: tering Jantje,dit is andere thee dan van van Nelle. Heb in Ede op school gezeten maar deze video zegt mij dat ik daar maar weer eens moet gaan kijken want dat hele Ede gaat bijna op de schep. Ook de sporen waar vroeger de Huck-Pak treinen met opleggers voor Italië werden geladen is weg net als de Enka fabriek. Mooi in beeld gebracht Maestro 👌👍🤞🆗

Wat een vréselijke omroepstem in deze trein. Spreekt véél te snel en legt rare klemtonen. Spraak- / presentatielessen zouden haar goed doen en de reizigers ook. De verstaanbaarheid wordt er zeer veel beter van.

Flexabiliteit is niet meer nodig: alles heeft z'n eigen plek en tijdstip. Maar je bedoelt waarschijnlijk op minder redundantie: nodig om verstoringen op te vangen. Ja, minder wissels zorgen voor minder mogelijkheden bij verstoringen... maar meer complexiteit is ook een belangrijke oorzaak van storingen. Er wordt flink opgeruimd in oude structuren.

Mooie rit. Maar de verbouwing Ede-Wageningen? Goed uitgangspunt, veel fouten in de uitvoering. De weggehaalde infra gaan we weer tientallen keren per jaar missen, en de nieuwe trend om maanden/jaren wachtruimtes en perronkappen weg te halen kan ik ook niet erg waarderen. Zodra je dat soort dingen opnoemt is het steevast "maar kijk eens wat we wél goed doen, niet zo negatief!" Ik heb het idee dat er met evaluaties praktisch niks gebeurt.

Dit is net als station Baarn een overstapstation zonder noodzakelijke kruisingen, dus ik begrijp niet wat hier nou verbeterd kan zijn anders dan een inhaalperron. Dus als je me vraagt zie je enige verbetering dan denk ik: nee. Weggegooid geld... Dit traject (Arnhem-Utrecht) had al veertig jaar geleden een hogesnelheidslijn kunnen zijn: geen bocht te bekennen! De prioriteiten van de ingenieurs en politici bezorgen mij grijze haren.

This was a great video. I agree with what someone said earlier about a sense of pride in good workmanship. Great seeing the improvements at Ede Waginen. I have been waiting for this for ages. Now to see what they have done at Delft, the other improvement project. I was about to ask about that line going off to the right from Ede-Waginen but then you posted about it. Would you be interested in any of my train videos from Australia from the passengers' point of view?

Heel goed, op twee dingen na. Die ene bovenleidingsmast (rond 10:26) konden ze wat mij betreft vervangen en ik zou een wissel pal na deze perron voor richting Ede Centrum laten aanleggen voor in noodgevallen.

The speed of trains in the Netherlands is limited to 140km/h (except for the high speed line to Belgium), isn't it? I have read that's because the underground of the tracks are mostly to swampy in order to allow higher speed. Can you confirm this?

High speed line is built on concrete for that reason. But this is not the case in other areas. The maximum speed is limited by the atb, the safety system that guards speeds. Breaking distance between signals also are a limiting factor.

I have one curiosity about distant signals (for example the one at 7:58): why do they have 3 lights if the red one is never on?

What makes you think the red one is never on? If there is a train in the next track section this light will show red.

@@TimKant But it’s a distant signal. Maybe I’m unaware of how distant signals work in NL, but generally they don’t monitor track sections and just tell what the next signal will show.

@@DanCojocaru2000 No problem, I’ll try to explain. A red signal means there is a train in the rail section after the signal. If there is train blocking your path in front of you, you will first encounter a yellow signal (slow down to 40 and prepare to stop) before encountering the red signal. So when you have a green signal, it means there are at least 2 free sections in front of you. There are other reasons to get a red signal, but these signals actively and automatically monitor free sections ahead of the train.

De wissels zijn nu zo aangelegd (of weggehaald) dat doorgaande treinen Amersfoort - Ede/Wageningen - Arnhem in de toekomst vrijwel onmogelijk worden, omdat er lang over het 'verkeerde' spoor moet worden gereden. Is dat met opzet gedaan?

Die doorgaande trein bestaat al jaren niet meer, 'dankzij' het aanbesteden van het spoor.

It looks very much like a tamper. At its most basic, a tamping machine only packs the ballast. Some modern machines, sometimes known as tamper-liners or tamping and lining machines, also correct the alignment of the rails to make them parallel and level, in order to achieve a more comfortable ride for passengers and freight and to reduce the mechanical strain applied to the rails by passing trains. This is done by finding places where the sleepers have sunk from the weight of the passing trains or frost action, causing the track to sag. The tamper lifts each sleeper and the rails up, and packs ballast underneath.[1] When the sleeper is laid down again, the sagged rails now sit at the proper level. Combining tamping and lining into a single machine saves time and money, as only one machine needs to be run over the track to perform both functions.

Afschuwelijk (kaal) geworden zeg, dat Ede-Wageningen. Perrons zonder overkappingen trouwens altijd👎 De behaaglijkheid is weg, mensen staan nu in weer en wind te vernaggelen.
