I am so honored to have went to the same school, studied with the same teacher, and to have seen her live in action. I love her so much and her artistry even at a very young was mastery. My high school teacher, her vocal tech singer, always had a wonderful story about her artistry and her warmth and readiness to learn.

This song popped up in my ipod shuffle. It has now been playing back to back for 5 days for five days while driving. About 52 times. And every time , her low range sends shivers down my spine and then her upper range kicks in.. I am no judge, I just thin it is superbly done.

I attended Oberlin Conservatory at the same time Denyce did. I wasn't a voice major but one of my voice major friends said, "Come with us to hear Denyce. She's going to have quite a brilliant career." When I heard her, I thought, "Wow, that's a big voice." I had no idea at that time how right my friends were about her career. I attended her first "Carmen" (Minnesota Opera) and was blown away by how wonderful she was. Bravo, Denyce!

I wish there was this much interest in this show when it was broadcast on PBS. FYI, the name of the show this clip is taken from is titled "Denyce Graves. Breaking the Rules". Of course it is not the original "Ave Maria" and if you listen to the amazing Sumi Jo version you can immediately tell the difference. We wanted a different version of the "Caccini" Ave Maria and I think it was an amazing success. It is no different from a work of art that you personally like or not. Never the less Denyce was spectacular in voice and on camera and she poured her heart and soul into this production. I am happy for the discussion allowed by the posting of it here. If you are looking for the traditional version, then no doubt this will disappoint you. And yet it offers one an alternative to experience. If all our experiences had to be exactly the same how dull life would be. Yes, it sounds like a different song and yet it is no less magnificent. I don't understand the intense vitriol when there is difference. This version is this rendition and for all commenting and reading .... may peace be with you... God bless.

@thangvuong91969 жыл бұрын
More like the Castrati of the past. Graves has a richness in her tone that no countertenor could achieve.
@alicjaalvena11207 жыл бұрын
castrati reach sound, lel. we have castrated guys today, either endocrynically castrated voice, trans people or just by accident. i don't hear about any of them making big career. there is no bigger lie than that about greatness of castrated guys voices. they were just famous in baroque, when females did not sing (it was treated as a disgrace). it is just an artifact of the past. no castrati of the present or the past could match mrs denyce vocally. countertenors > castrati anyway (though great countertenor voices are really rare, most guys either lack good technique or their voices just suck).

@pleaseenteraname48245 жыл бұрын
Aedan Alvena We don't have castrati today, and even if we did they wouldn't go through the same hard training old castrati used to (Even modern opera singers in general don't have the same training and the decline in quality is visible). As for the claim that castrati were substitutes for women, it's simply not true. They were for choirs because , indeed, women weren't allowed to sing in church. But in opera that wasn't the case. Castrati and female voices are different and roles were written for voices that best suited the characters in the composer's intentions. For example Handel's Julius Caesar, Rinaldo and Serse are male roles written for and played by castrati (now by women and falsettisti, of course). On the other hand, there are roles written for and played by women from the same era, such as Mozart's Queen of the night from the Magic Flute or Countess Almaviva from the Marriage of Figaro, or Handel's Arsamene (also from Serse) or Galatea from Aci and Galatea. Plus, you have roles originally written for and played by women beside the fact they characters are men, Cherubino from the Mozart's Marriage of Figaro or Goffredo from Handel's Rinaldo are examples of travesti roles.

Absolutely gorgeous. Except that it was not composed by Caccini, but a 20th century composer named Vavilov. Which is why it adapted so well to this arrangement. But that's beside the point, this voice is something to admire and emulate.
@veramancheva68202 жыл бұрын

@elm268 A mezzo-soprano (meaning "medium" or "middle" "soprano" in Italian) is a type of classical female singing voice whose range lies between the soprano and the contralto singing voices, usually extending from the A below middle C to the A two octaves above (i.e. A3-A5 in scientific pitch notation, where middle C = C4). In the lower and upper extremes, some mezzo-sopranos may extend down to the G below middle C (G3) and as high as "high C" (C6)
