Hello Plant Friends! 🌵
Cacti are one of my absolute fav's (same with succulents) and I feel like they get a bad rep for being labelled as a 'beginner' plant... but people find them difficult. So let's demistify cacti together! I promise they actually are really easy!!
Cacti Soil Mix:
- 3:2:1 (potting mix : coarse sand : perlite/pumice)
- Optional: slow release fertilizer & wood chips

Until recently, I found them so hard to care for. I probably killed 4 or 5 cacti/succulents. But I got a GORGEOUS Lemaireocereus marginatus (Mexican fence post?) and I really want to keep it alive, so your video came on point (I love your monsoon metaphor!) I've had it under a grow light for about 5 months and it's growing a little bump! I'd love to get a prickly pear. I love their unpredictable shape

Hi I’m from Texas and newish at plants. I love cacti of all shapes and sizes too. I think they are super easy if you do exactly what you said, treat them like they are in their environment. All my cacti and succulents are west facing on my patio so they get some brutal heat. All the other stuff is inside or at my front door. From May-September I water mine 2x a month and the rest of the year they are inside and only get water once a month. I know you said they grow slow and that is true sort of. They will grow as big and as fast as you let them. I like to move mine from the purchased pot to their forever pot as soon as they come home. It’s usually massive to replicate being planted in the ground to promote width and height growth. I love how you have them labeled bc I can never remember all their names.

I love your cacti collection, I would really like to see a succulent edition too! I have a lot of cacti (50+) and they're really easy to care for once you get to know their specific care needs. As far as cacti you need to know/see, I love Astrophytum asterias, Echinocereus rigidissimus (rainbow cactus) and Opuntia "Santa Rita". If you like Euphorbia too, I love E. ammak, E. platyclada, E. trigona Rubra and E. lactea "(especially E. lactea White ghost")! :)

This was a great video! Thanks so much. You were informative without overloading us. And clearly you love cacti! And I totally agree about the whole “get a cactus if you’re a noob to plants!” It is not as simple as that. I’m willing to bet that most people have killed their first few cacti. The watering is what screws most people over as well as what type of soil to use. There’s definitely a learning curve to successfully grow a cactus!

Thank you for such an informative video, for someone who claims not to know the names of cactus you do know very well how to look after them and you inspired me. The cactus you are holding at minute 14 is of the Crassula family possibly Crassula Lycopodioides. At minute 14:20 looks like a mamilaria. As for suggestions on cacti to collect, I'd go go the Crassula family, they are succulents and fun - no thorns lol. My Crassula ovata is 35 years old. I keep telling everyone who'd listen to try and look after at least one plant, because it is a great feeling to have a plant for such a long time. Keep posting 🙂

Thank you so much. I love your video. You cover so many questions I have about my beautiful old cacti I just inherited . They must be over twenty years old. Some are doing great. Some may be too dry and seem to have lost half their soil. I want them to be very happy. I have a nice grow light, a very good bay window. I think I will get some cactus soil mix and repot a few , and be very conservative with water over winter. I am very excited about my new old cactus friends. You helped me a lot demonstrating how you water, and I now have more of an idea how to take care of them.♥️♥️

Hi! I think my plant is dehydrated but also it is fall/going to winter time :X Ive had it for about a year and I've only watered them weekly 1-3cups max (1cup during the winter and 3 cups during the summer). I dont know what to do. my cactus does not show any browning/yellowing but is turning pale green/soft and one of them their spines can easily be snapped off.. I dont know what to do! please let me know! I have BIG cactuses in one pot (about 4-6ft high and all three are in one pot.. the 4ft one is the one that is suffering). I live in chicago... so im assuming it is the same climate as Canada. your help would be greatly appreciated! thank you. Also I believe that is a Peruvian apple cactus.

i never had cacti, then 2 months ago i bought one for fun. I loved it. Now i have a whole bunch bought online and just deliverd. aaaannnd i do not know anything bout taking care of cacti. Great video you made!!! The last days i searched on internet youtube, how to take care of them, should i put them out in summer... i bought plenty growlights as well, not knowing if i don't kill them putting them under it 😱😃.... so the little cacti deliverd today are in their nursery pots. lots of soil fell out, rooths are coming out under the nursery pot, and the soil is sooooo dry it crack. Also the soil is like little stones, hard pieces of sand. Not like the soil for cacti i mix this with perlite some little stones and maybe now as wel soil for orchids. So Can i change the pots now from nursery to terracotta or do i have to wait for spring (after 21th of march). if i repot them do I give them straight away water, or do i wait for a few days/week/more weeks. I live in Belgium, so i guess it's almost the same envirement then where you live. All tips are welcome in case of what you would do with just deliverd cacti/Euphorbia. I think Euphorbia is no cacti but i am not sure.... thanks for the great video, loved it !!!🤩🤩🤩

They can survive indoors fine but they can be put outside in the summer. I just keep them indoors all of the time. I don't like bringing plants from outside indoors due to pests. I re-pot all of my cactus straight away but I don't water until a few days or a week later. The stones in the soil are for increased drainage. Perlite isn't always enough or the stones may have been used as top dressing. Be sure not to water them too much because they store a lot of water due to their natural environment. I water mine every 2 weeks but it's not hot here. The best method is the 'drench and dry' method. Allow the soil to dry out completely and then drench it completely. Be sure all of your pots have drainage holes. The best soil is Grow Buddha with some Horticultural Lava Rock as top dressing. Or you can make your own based on their ingredients. You should check out the Prickly Pear Cactus, where you are they will produce edible fruit, flowers and loads of pads that can be propagated.

hard to say without seeing it... but cacti can rot if they're overwatered! so poking the spot with a chopstick to ensure it's not soft is what i'd recommend if it's dry and hard, that's okay! sometimes cacti have little scabs from old injuries and they won't harm the plant :)

I find mini cacti tricky. I lost two (one to root rot and one to shrinkage). They were near grow lights. I watered them weekly when fully dry as they are so small and dry out so fast. I’m afraid cacti will just barely survive in northern or other lower light conditions hence I use grow lights. One more mini cacti is shrinking. I repotted it and noticed its roots are short and dry. Perhaps underwatering? Or what causes shrinkage and how to prevent it? I missed a week of watering when I was away before I noticed the shrinking after. I usually water once a week when fully dry, including bigger cacti, even during winter since they are under grow lights. The bluish cactus you have may be Peruvian torch cactus or Stenocereus Pruinsus Cactus. I have the latter.
@sashajames3991

Cacti don’t need to be water once a week they can tolerate being dry for a long time. Try to mimic desert conditions as she stated in the video it does not rain for quite awhile in desert lands much less once a week. It will root root. Also use terracotta pots that helps pull any excessive moisture out of the plants.
@cricketjem119
@cricketjem119 Жыл бұрын
@@sashajames3991 thanks for info. Just odd I hardly watered and put under grow lights and my small cacti shriveled and even died. So far I find watering tiny cacti every week or so seems okay as long as they are fully dry and getting strong light particularly from grow lights. The tiny babies I’ve had seem more delicate and could shrivel up unlike bigger cacti that can go for long periods without water.

You know what's super frustrating? When you buy a plant and there's no identification on it. It just says "succulent" or something like that. How the heck can I know how to take care of something if I don't know what it is? I bought a huge 4-5 foot cactus and it is so gorgeous I can't even stand it, but I don't know exactly what it is. I've done research and think it might be a Mexican Post Cactus, but I'm not totally sure. And I bought it from a nursery! Shouldn't they know what they're selling??
