I've always felt like your lessons were just above my play grade but I would watch anyway. Sometimes down the road something might click with me. Today you really connected the dots with seeing the CAGED chord in the pentatonic scale. Being melodic just became an obtainable option. Thank you

Pretty sure it's the A Major Pentatonic scale!
@williamsavran9256
@williamsavran9256 6 жыл бұрын
That is the "box 1" shape of the F# minor pentatonic scale. That is also the A major pentatonic scale that would fit over the "A" and "G" shaped chords in CAGED.
@williamsavran9256
@williamsavran9256 6 жыл бұрын
You're right, that is the A major pentatonic that fits over an "E" shaped chord. F# minor and A major share the same notes.. The shape you linked is also the F# minor pentatonic shape that fits over the "D" chord, or what's called position 2 or box 2. It all about what you consider to be the root of the scale.
@williamsavran9256

I think you're right, but most of the time people just play all the notes in the box. He started on the 6th of the Amajor scale.

Your videos are helpful, Mr Papa! I've been a song player on the guitar for about twenty years. During the pandemic, I started learning scales and the caged system. I now have a firm understanding of how the scales all connect and why they are what they are. You help translate that understanding into music!

I've been noodling in and out of the First (Minor)/ Fifth (Major) position of the pentatonic scale for a few months now; trying to map things out, focus on the landing on root notes, but I felt like I hit a wall. I started searching and it lead me to the world of arpeggios. I could see somewhat on how that could apply but it wasn't clear until I stumbled upon your video. This will help me find more notes outside of the pentatonic scale that I could use, to sound better within the progression of the song. Thank you

You remind me to somebody who play guitar like you when I started learning to play guitar sometimes in 1990. He moved house to another town before I completed the whole lesson he taught me. After he left I stopped to play melodically. Instead I was more into shredding and went like a speed demon when it came to soloing. Now everything has changed. I put musical aspects forward and do soloing for what it is called for - and what you do in the video is taking me to further musical exploration. Good Job.

Hey Brett ... thanks for this lesson and the 3 free lessons. Every time I check out one of your lessons, another door opens for me and the things other great guitarists seem to do so effortlessly suddenly lose their mystery and complexity thanks to your comprehensive, humorous and totally engaging delivery of their secrets. Just something, if you ever run out of ideas for your next video … I have noticed in many of your lessons, not to mention the 4 courses I own of yours, you do some incredibly tasteful ascending pentatonic runs … not the note sequence repetition stuff but the chromatic, string skipping, stacking with blues notes and major 3rd's stuff (boy was that a mouthful). I would love to see a full lesson on this if you get a chance … have a great festive season mate! Cheers, Aussie Mark

The caged system has de-mystified the fretboard a lot for me. This particular video tho really helped.A big peice of the puzzle just clicked in place... mmm very satisfied. Thx.

That..made a lot of things fall into place that I just could not get to fit together before. When you talked about the arpeggios - a hell of a lot of stuff clicked. Lovely playing and damn cool guitar too :) Thank you.

You really have to think hard when playing like this!! These lessons help a lot. It's neat when you start to see how things connect, like how the C shape shares notes with the D shape. I like the way you suggested mixing it up. Just throwing in a few target notes from chord shapes mixed with my regular scale noodling helps a lot. Thanks...

Fantastic Brett! Been looking for this synthesis for a while. Now I can move forward in learning lead. Been a lot of various parts until now. I know the chords and the Pentatonics and some licks, but the licks were like floating pieces of knowledge, not landing anywhere. So the CAGED shapes put to a root in the Pentatonic allows that CAGED chord to be articulated on key. And the licks now can be selected which fit the chord place. Lick-on-Chord-on-Key. Well done sir!

Thanks, do you have a vid laying out the different categories of lick techniques? Kinda like Tim Pierce does in your video of him in Melodic Blues Soling Tips ( at 4:44) Like also his palm mute and brush strings technique also mentioned. Starting melodic soloing after years of rthym guitar and not knowing what I don't know I want to cover the bases. Thanks for your energy and generosity of spirt that comes through.@@BrettPapa
