People keep complaining and driving like maniacs, then they'll drop the speed limit back down to 55mph...Be careful what you wish for....THEN and only then will you all REALLY complain...Driving entails risks....I say when you get to an intersection, don't be the first one off the line. wait. And if you're being tailgated, move over....If you feel safe in the right hand lane, stay there....If it's all too much for ya, get off the road completely.....Take care out there and be safe!!

The problem, specifically with the Cajon Pass, but elsewhere as well, is that the affordable housing is moving further and further out, and the half-decent jobs stay put. So a large number of people commute from Victorville and Hesperia to jobs "down the hill" in Ontario, Fontana, Chino, Redlands and so on. To get to and from work, they hop in the fast lane of I-15 and haul ass, and woe betide the slower traffic that gets in their way.

In my experience, drivers who do not anticipate the grade and cannot maintain speed going up are a huge reason of congestion (must put the pedal to the metal to keep going 70+ in the left lane, and at 70 you need to move over for others to pass). Going down, if you are uncomfortable with your vehicle’s speed and must brake, move to a lane right of yours. Plain and simple. It’s the drivers, period.

Years ago, a former CHIP officer told me that statistically, it's road way design flaws rather than speed which were overwhelmingly the cause of auto accidents. He said it's generally the same areas over and over again. Furthermore, the German autobahn dispels the conveniently "speed theory". Although from my own experiences Americans are far more addicted to their phones even while driving than Europeans are. Plus, there are many more Slower Traffic Must Keep To The Slow Lane signs than in the US.

@@kristiblack4789 what I've noticed about California drivers. There is an element of predicted, or anticipated maneuvering like everyone is in a road race. Combine a road race mentality driver with a poorly engeneered road and pyshics wins.

In the last few years, people have just stopped following the rules. They blow through stop signs, barely slowing down. They speed up for yellow lights and blast through the red just hoping to squeak by. So many people are also paying more attention to their cell phones. As soon as they stop at a light, out comes the phone and the light turns green and they just sit there. But the most I see is speeding, zig zagging in and out of lanes from the fast lane to the slow lane and back. They ignore big rigs, tailgate, flip off other drivers. The speed limit is 70, I'm doing 75 and they pass me like nothing. 90mph+ all day long

Problem is, it's too easy to get a driver's license in a country that's full of self-entitled pricks who only think about themselves and the consequences for bad decisions aren't harsh enough for those that make them. Stop letting kids drive. Make it mandatory to pass a training course, not just take a test. Mandate a probationary period where one accident or ticket sets you back at square one or revokes your license altogether. Driving is a privilege, not a right. Don't get the two confused.
@nlpnt

They also made it basically mandatory to have a drivers' license and a car to become a fully functioning adult. If I increased my speed to 75 so they stop tailgating me they would still speed up to continue tailgating me. People are just ridiculous, but its a sign of narcissism. People who think everyone needs to cater to them because they are special and need to be somewhere. So many times I’m passing people that are in the fast lane while I’m in the slow lane. This road should never have been heavily traveled in the first place. It's because of suburban sprawl developments to the north that never should have existed. Most of the inland empire is also the result of LA not building enough housing. There is absolutely no rail connection, and trucks & buses don't even have their own lane (something that's common in European countries on roads that see heavy traffic). And the speed limit is way too high - it should be at most 35mph through the mountain pass. This is a failure of engineering and urban planning.

@@1990758 That's a long-distance trip. Nobody commutes that far. Long-distance transportation (whether freight or passengers) should mostly done by rail or bus, with a car used only if it's absolutely necessary. It's sad that Amtrak discontinued rail service to Las Vegas decades ago. LA to Vegas via the Inland Empire is an ideal candidate for high-speed rail.

as someone who drives up and down from victorville to ontario daily, most people in the state need to learn how to drive better!! its a 4 lane highway pick a lane and go stop switching lanes thinking traffic will be less in another lane! once that happens i promise you accidents will happen less. it is always a pain to drive on a friday because every idiot going to vegas starts thinking they are in a hurry and just spend most of the time in traffic switching lanes which ends up having a minor accident which then backs it up for hours which could lead to the deadlier accidents when people are going 70 into the cajon and have to suddenly stop.

You can blame the highway all you want but one this for sure and two things are for certain: The highway NEVER changes. It stays the same day in and day out. What DOES change is the makeup of the drivers on these roads and their driving skill, patience, mannerisms, and mood! Essentially, it's these people watching tv shows behind the wheel, having FaceTime phone calls while driving, not mapping their directions out PRIOR to getting on the actual road, and not being mindful that you are not the only one on four (or more) wheels out here! Stay Safe, Not Stupid!

Artificially setting the speed limits lower than the natural flow of traffic, is why many people just chronically speed the entire way to their destination, and don’t take a lower limit on a hill seriously. People just roll their eyes and assume it’s a speed trap for tax collection. Most interstates could safely be set at 80mph (seems like the average speed I’ve witnessed most people cruise naturally at on the highway), with 55/65/70mph zones being reserved only for dangerous or congested areas.

Speed limit is too fast and people are continuing to increase their speed more as they drive as they are inpatient to get to were they need to go. Yes, the Cajon pass is dangerous especially coming back from Hesperia towards LA and if your speeding as you hit the steep downhill curve at night especially you can easily flip off the freeway on the 15fwy. I’ve seen it a few times. very scary especially for inexperienced drivers they need to be careful and I also think it might be a good choice to drop the speed limit back to 65, but no police or HWY patrol people will still speed.
