I believe the end of the chorus actually stated that “One day shall meet, someone that doesn’t hurt (my) heart”. Not pointing out that he met her at the wrong time but pointing out meeting someone else better than her.

I think she has always been somebody else’s. He was the one who was always hopelessly in love with her and kept mounting that feeling until he couldn’t take it anymore and decided foolishly to buy a ring.

It's the first time I heard and listening to the song too. It's kinda like an story about a guy who secretly love this woman who 😮treat him just as friend and he's been witnessing her keeps on falling with wrong men and this guy faithfully being there for her and make sure she's fine.
