इस कहानी की शुरुआत तब होती है जब सुभद्रा गर्भवती थी। एक बार रात को अर्जुन अपनी गर्भवती पत्नी सुभद्रा के साथ बात कर रहा था जब वह उसे नई युद्ध संरचना, चक्रव्यूह के बारे में बताता है। चक्रव्यूह यानी युद्ध में सैनिकों को खड़ा करके एक ऐसी जटिल गोलाकार संरचना का निर्माण करना था जिसमें कई परतें होती हैं। इस व्यूह से बाहर निकलना प्रवेश करने की तुलना में कहीं अधिक कठिन था। सुभद्रा के गर्भ के अंदर उसका होने वाला पुत्र अभिमन्यु भी अपने पिता से इस व्यूह रचना के बारे में सुन रहा था। अर्जुन सुभद्रा को बता रहा था कि चक्रव्यूह में कैसे प्रवेश किया जाता है लेकिन तभी सुभद्रा को नींद आने लगी और अर्जुन ने बात वहीं रोक दी।
वीर अभिमन्यु की ताकत और युद्ध शैली देखकर कौरव भी अचंभित थे। वह अपने प्रत्येक विरोधी के साथ अभूतपूर्व पराक्रम के साथ लड़ रहा था। निःसंदेह यह एक हारी हुई लड़ाई थी, लेकिन अपना रथ, तलवार, धनुष-बाण और भाला खोने के बाद भी अभिमन्यु ने हार नहीं मानी। अंत में उसने अपने टूटे हुए रथ के एक पहिए को शस्त्र के रूप में उठाया और लड़ने लगा। लेकिन सशस्त्र और एक साथ खड़े कौरवों के उन 7 महारथियों ने अंततः उसका वध कर दिया।
