Bannik (Banno) is a demonological character in the beliefs of the Eastern Slavs, a special kind of house spirits, an unkind spirit. Bannik dwells in a bathhouse; usually invisible, sometimes takes the form of a naked old man covered with mud and leaves from a broom, or a man with long hair, and also turns into a wolf, a dog, a cat, a frog, a white hare. He lives behind the stove or under the shelf. Likes to steam after several shifts of people in the bathhouse and washes exclusively with dirty (unclean) water, drained from human bodies. It is believed that the bannik steams after midnight, and it is not allowed to be in the bathhouse at that time. The bannik is blamed for all failures in the bathhouse. Bannik's favorite pastime is to scald people with boiling water, throw stones in the stove, and knock on the wall, frightening those who are steaming. Bannik harms very badly (skinning or steaming to death) only to those who violate the prohibitions.
