Based on a true story.
had been thinking a lot about my family and how I was raised up. The film was based on a true story from my childhood in 90s China.
My mom was definitely strict but you know what, I miss her so very much.
Love you, mom!

I think the amount of childhood trauma the viewer has will reflect how they view the ending. A lot of people can't trust that this little interaction will change the dynamic of the relationship beyond this point. A lot of people have been coaxed back into a bad situation by the abuser suddenly being pleasant to be around before it returns to the same routine.

It's strange that the mom's way of connection isn't that she talks to her child about how she is viewed as a monster for her actions. She seems to look at it as a thought so ridiculous that it's funny and she's just having a good laugh about it, like, 'Ooo! I'm so scary, right? Rawr. Haha.' The best part of it that shows a change is that she's not livid about the pages being vandalized and ripped out. There's not much that shows regret or an apology, though apologies are harder to give then to simply feel regret.

People saying the mother is strict and the ending isn't happy don't get this movie, in my opinion This is titled 'to mom' ... because it's an activity with a learning curve. Most parents parent the way their parents parented. To me, the ending is the mother realizing that she can parent better by meeting her child halfway, so the ending is the promise of a better and more understanding relationship. At first she just wanted what she believed was the best for her child but at the end there, she realizes that what she thought was best may not be the best

No, people can go to therapy and heal and unlearn the trauma their parents taught them before having children so they don’t pass it down, stop acting like this is okay and not their fault because “it’s all they knew😢” grow up

Even though I don’t relate to the experiences this child faced given I come from an american home, the take I get from this is that the mom is just disciplining her child the way her parents did to her but she probably never received a fun and rewarding childhood, and in the end became strict as a result. But because her relationship with her son strengthened she realized it’s ok to have fun and loosen up a little, she even took light of how her son perceived her instead of being furious.

People in North, South, and Central American homes can and have experienced similar things. So I just wanted to clarify to anyone reading these replies that it’s not really a given that someone that came from an American home wouldn’t have similar childhood experiences. I mostly say this due to one way I saw how to comment could be interpreted. I know not of its intent

to everyone who completely misunderstood the ending; the point was not to justify the mom’s actions and attitude, but to signify the start of something new and better beginning. people are human and we learn from our mistakes, that is what she was doing.

My mom was like that. I acted out so much and had so many toys put up in bins and hidden. Trashbags full of everything I didnt need when I wouldnt clean my room. I'm not saying its a great parenting tatic but it was the only way my mom knew how to deal with me. It hurt and I hated her for it but she was just trying to care for me, and we always made up in the end

While it's not justify for the bad parenting, I believe they believe they did what best for their kids. Keep being grateful and don't complain when it's not really a big issue, kids.

A lot of these comments are saying that the ending doesn't justify what the mother did. It doesn't, but that's not the point of this film (or, I'm pretty sure it isn't). As someone who grew up in an Asian household, I feel this film; although my mother was never as harsh as portrayed here, she was stricter than an "average American parent." Although I do wish for parents to give their children freedom to be a kid, we (as Asian-Americans) know that although their behavior seems like abuse, our parents love us and want the best for us. I can't explain it clearly due to cultural differences, but the end of this film conveys that our parents truly care for us and are not always the tiger moms everyone makes them out to be.

this is just so cool, not only the art, but.. this kid probably feels so bad, because their mom is taking everything away from them, and not even letting them have fun. in the kid's view, they're probably a big monster, but to the mom, she's just parenting, and taking things away that they shouldn't have.

What I took from this is that the mom deep down wanted her daughter to be constructive. Not mindlessly watching other peoples cartoons, comics or music…aka art, but spending significant time making her own. Mom: if your interested in something, try making it. I’m AA (AfricanAmerican), my mother was pretty much like that.

Honestly, I was waiting for a reason for the Mom to justify being such a jerk and depriving her child of everything that brought them joy. Maybe it's just me but this is kind of disturbing in the way she just laughed at the drawings clearly meant to express her child's frustration with how they're being treated. Allowing your child to have a life should be common sense, pigeonholing them into doing things that you consider "constructive" or "academic" in the same way the mom was is just abusive. She didn't even go to check in on her child when they were crying because she was too busy looking at their drawings and giving away their comic books (?) I don't like to generalize or make assumptions but it feels as if the person who made this didn't have a very good childhood.

@Pippin Forrest how they represent it, this is not a good relationship. 1) don’t force someone do a hobby or an activity when they don’t want: piano is not necessary for a kid and she doesn’t have to learn classic music to play a piano. 2) sell her books is an imposition of the mother that doesn’t have respect for the hobbies of her daughter. Also me as a kid didn’t want to do my homework but my mother was there to control me. When i have finished, i could play or read my books without prohibition like this case. My grandmother was like the mother of this video and I don’t miss her neither her son miss her.
