Calcium for Shrimp and Snails

Shrimp and snails have shells that require calcium regularly. A shrimp shell is anywhere from 30%-50% calcium carbonate and a snail shell is 95%-98% calcium carbonate. In this video I show you an inexpensive and readily available idea to give them the calcium carbonate they need to stay healthy and happy.

My ramhorns were looking...terrible. So I heard either put tums in or eggshells. Well I'm a weirdo and I have eggshells. I just sprinkled a bit in the tank and all of my snails are stunning. A lovely deep healthy blue. I'm blown away. I'm going to try tums next to see how it compares.

I have been doing this for a few years, with wonderful result for my freshwater shrimp and snails. They one detail that I have read about is do not use Mint flavored one with your snails, it will burn their skin. Nice video and have a great day!

Plz dont give them staright tums thats not the best thing for snails or shrimp.. they like it because of the sweetness and calcium but theres other chemicals and sugars that aren't safe if you want to really use tums for this incorporate a good amount into snail jello(snello)..best thing is to make the snello with calcium powder 👍

Soooo I had no idea what “tums” were and because apparently I am stupid, I didn’t research further and went to my fish shop (in Japan) asking if they didn’t have a calcium tablet to feed to my snails and shrimps.... the guy looked at me strange 👁👄👁

Have you noticed any issues with your fish or snails since you started using tums? I'm trying to fix my apple snail shells. I've bought calcium-enriched foods for my snails but my guppies eat it all up before they get a chance to eat it. Looking for some advice pretty much. :) Great video by the way. :)

I'm wondering the same thing. I would try feeding them at night when the lights are out. That might help with the guppies eating all the food.

I've done eggshells (messy and a lot of work) and cuttlebone (broken pieces off and put in the HOB filter). So my question is, do they have to actually eat it or absorb it from the water column? I'd love to just drop something in the tank and let them have at it

I have only 1 Amano and 1 Nerite in my 10G planted community (Tetra) tank. My water is little on the softer side and the pH is about 6.1. I'm little worried about my snail and shrimp's calcium requirement. Do you think Tumms is a good idea for that? or what else would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

Your snails will love it. the shrimp may or may not. I've seen it both ways. Try a piece and see what happens.

You can make snail Jello☺ one of the ingredients is tums but the plain jello serves as calcium too and the extra things you put in the jello (i.e algae wafers, baby food, fish flakes) adds additional nutrients for your snail buddies. Plus ghost shrimp love the jello too!

I've noticed with the Cuttlebone that they loved it at first and then they didn't pay much attention to it. BUT it still gives off calcium in the water so it is still beneficial.

I just use regular generic berry ones. My snails prefer the berry ones 🍓 They are doing just fine and I have over 50. **Some people worry that the artificial flavors and dyes may have a harmful effect. However all of mine are thriving.

Should I worry about the sugar content in the tums? I heard sugar can be harmful to aquariums so I just wanna be safe, thank you for this video :) 👍🏽

I have Nirite Snails and 1 Betta fish. Can I put Tumms? Will it not hurt or harmful to Betta?

I have a betta too. It wont harm your betta. In fact fish need certain amounts of calcium for their little bones too. If you're worried about too much calcium dissolving into the water and effecting your water parameters you can make "snail Jello". There are recipes online. It has tums already in the jello so it'll be a solid less dissolving substance for the snails/shrimp to snack on.

I'd suggest no because what ever chemical or extract is used to make it minty may have adverse effects. When in doubt about a product, don't use it to be on the safe side.

Yes it is. It's primarily made out of calcium carbonate which neutralizes hydrochloric acids in humans and helps build strong healthy shells in snails. Calcium is great 😊
