Lubrication Explained

I get a lot of questions about different detergents, antiwear additives and other additives in engine oils. The thing is, sometimes it's hard to know what is what. That's where Lake Speed Jr comes in - with a wealth of knowledge in the engine oil world, he gives us the low down on the different chemistries.

I've been binge watching your videos, great content. One thing I'm finding hard to find decent info on are friction modifiers in engine oil, what do they do? How do they differ from anti-wear additives?

And how is it, that a non-fiction modified oil (Penrite 10 tenths Premium) still meets all the relevant API, and ACEA standards, is it because it's PAO/ester based?

Great conversation. Exactly what I was looking for too. I noticed that the Mobil 1 5w 50 Supercar claims a slightly higher TBN than the 0w40 although with no Calcium. Why is that? What I would like to see is sulfated ash contents for these oils. ( X custom blender lubricants salesman out of the loop for a decade)

Interesting, could you explain the interaction of this topic and Transmission fluids? As the common debate between Honda ATFs vs Multi vehicle ATF; Dw1 which has a bunch of Zinc compared to most others ATF with various blends of Calcium and Phosphorus with some members swearing by DW1 other swearing at it because it gets burnt using a Valvoline multi vehicle Thank you!

Yeah I'm still looking into it whether to use DW1 or something like Amsoil or Redline in my next fluid change

Great knowledge Lake... Question...once ZDDP has made its conversion and coated the metal how long does that process last and with a new oil change without ZDDP does this coating (protection) go away ?

This was a GREAT segment. I have two passenger cars, one a recent model DI Ford 1.5L Ecoboost and a 23 year old Honda V6, and have tried to simplify my maintenance by using the same oil in both. Because Honda revalidated the 5W30/API-SJ -spec'ed 3.0L in 2001 to use 5W20, I have been using that grade in the 2000 (I can find no changes between the 2000 and 2001 3.0L engines). As the API specs changed to SP I have begun to wonder if I wasn't shooting myself in the foot. Obviously, the SP is great in the DI Ecoboost but this segment leads me to think that it might be great for the Honda. The Pennzoil 5W20/API-SP bottle back-specs to SJ so I might be more golden than I thought I was. Any comments?

You may be able to get away with the 5w20 in your Honda, depending on the HTHS value, old Honda V6's need HTHS at least 2.8, or you start seeing pre-mature bearing wear.
@SootHead
@SootHead Жыл бұрын
@@rolandotillit2867 Haven't seen any documentation for an HTHS spec for the 3.0L Hondas. Where did you find it? What's the difference between the 2000 and the 2001, when they went to the 5W20 recommendation? I dug thru parts books and specs and couldn't see a single change between 2000 and 2001 (doesn't mean I didn't miss anything but if there is something it's deeply hidden and small). The car is low miles and is lightly used, so in no way is is it sever duty. I will see if I can find the HTHS spec for Penz Plat SP 5W20, thanks.

@@SootHead HTHS is speced to the clearances on the bearings, and piston rings. For the clearances that Honda uses on its bearings, (.002" service limit), you want a viscosity of at least 2.8cSt at 150 celsius. That's the HTHS viscosity, your DI engine probably has tighter clearances on the bearings so that's why it needs a thinner oil. All else being equal, a tighter clearance means more oil pressure.
@SootHead
@SootHead Жыл бұрын
@@rolandotillit2867 I get all that, but how do you account for the 2000 engine spec'ed for 5W30 and the 2001 for 5W20 with no changes? My theory is that they simply revalidated the earlier engine by running tests and found no notable problems. Bearing clearances on both are listed at .002-0044. I have the Ecoboost manual but it's on CD and I have to fire up an older computer to view it, but IIRC it's also .002" I checked the oil pressure of the 3.0L with 5W30 vs 5W20 with a wchanical gauge about 10 years ago when I switched it to 5W20 and at roughly the same oil temp, it was only 1-2 pounds different as far as I could tell. The 5W20 I used to use was heavy in grade and the 5W30 was light in grade and that can level the field a bit. I might still have all the info for review. It's always good to recheck but I'm not worried about the viscosity aspect, mainly the additive changes as mentioned in this video.
@rolandotillit2867
@rolandotillit2867 Жыл бұрын
@@SootHead The additives are much better now than back then. Like the video states, the detergents and anti-wear additives compete for space on the metal. So what they do now is find additives that do both, clean and protect metal, that way the additives don't have to compete but rather complete each other.

Interesting...okay so high TBN oil is not necessary, especially when using good quality gas (example Euro 5 compliant)
@GainingDespair
@GainingDespair Жыл бұрын
Its just weird how a better oil ultimately is a lower quality oil. I mean I see these debates about LSPI yet I don't own a turbo charged car, that means nothing to me. My whole life more additived has kinda meant better with motor oil, especially in the boutique market. Only for folks to come around now and say actually the more one penny pinches the cost of oil the better it is. Coming from the same folks who argued for a decade how CAFE requirements didn't increase motor wear because they had higher levels of detergents, and AW additives ....
