I shopped at Caldor. I liked having more shopping choices than what are available today.

I miss Caldor. Last thing I bought there was a weed eater a little while before it closed. Still using it today.

Hey Alex, thanks for doing this video! I really miss Caldor, they were my favorite retailer from back in the day and still is. It's a shame, they could have lasted longer if Carl Bennett didn't retire. The changing of new ownerships didn't make things any better and made it worse for them. I filmed an abandoned Caldor in Middletown, NY and I believe is the only one left that is abandoned, which is insane. I just wish someone bought them out again and revived the retail chain but obviously it's too late for that to happen, Walmart and Amazon have killed off a lot of these nice retail stores. Pretty sad situation

I grew up in Long Island, and I was very young when they shut down. But I remember loving the place because of all the coin operated rides and games they had up front. I don't remember the store layout whatsoever. But I remember always getting excited when my mom said we were going to Caldor, because it meant I got to ride the horsey. And to a little kid, that is so much fun.

Bradlees didn’t declare bankruptcy the same year as Caldor. Bradlees went chapter 11 in 1995 and then it’s second and final bankruptcy filing was in 2001. Caldor declared bankruptcy in 1999.

I remember around 1987, Caldor phased out quite a few of their small electronics. I timed the markdowns and cleaned up, including a Sony radio for $3 I still use today. Here in northeast we also had the Fair, which carried similar product quality. I don't necessarily miss the stores, but we have fewer choices today.

Caldor didn’t update with the times. The products sold didn’t reflect the diversity of the area of locations. Then along came Target, the death of them.

Doesn’t Southeastern supermarket Publix have an oddly similar slogan to Calder.

They could have definitely survived & been the number 4 national chain & even entering new markets like Canada, Mexico & Australia. Starting with opening up in the rest of new England more majorly like Massachusetts, New Hampshire & Maine with "new concept" stores from the USA Fanon wiki (just tweaked) which would operate in bigger stores around the same size as Super Kmart Centers & include A Toy Department, Electronics Center, A Grocery area (Doesn't have to be that big since its a traditional discounter) but the Grocery ares should include a Deli, Bakery & Cremery aswell. Along with a food court of 3 - 6 restaurants that would mix between Caldor Discount Stores include: Dunkin’, McDonald's, Burger King, Tim Hortons, Popeyes, Wendy's, Subway, TCBY, Dairy Queen, Cinnabon, Taco Bell, KFC, Wayback Burgers, Charley's Philly Steaks, Shake Shack, Arby’s, Chick-fil-A, Sonic Jack in the Box, Hardee’s, Domino’s, Whataburger, Checkers, Krystal, Starbucks, Wetzels Pretzels, Culver’s & Pizza Hut Express. These food courts would be in the back of the stores like where the employees areas & the loading shipment docks are unlike the mini malls infront of the stores like Wal-Mart, TARGET & Kmart. Also differnt from theirs is they have no official 'Food Court' in those stores they are all like Shops that arent connected, in Caldor they would be more similar to a malls food court where all the restaurants are lined up & you can sit down in the middle with youre friends & family or by yourself. More convenient too since you can do youre traditional shopping & order off 3 - 6 different menus while not having to worry about all the downsides to malls. The new concept would also include a Photography Center, a Floral, Pharmacy, Customer Service & Return desk & whatever mini stores that wanna move in those lots where the mini malls in most stores are. The concept would also include a Caldor Rainbow Auto Center which uses its old rainbow over the newly created logo just instead of saying simply Caldor, it says Caldor Rainbow Auto Center. With a tire service & everything you expect from an Auto Center basically, a Garden Center which would bring the life of beatifil nature to their stores & bring things like Decor, Appliances, Cookware & more as a more prominent part of their stores. Half of their nee stires would also have an underground level/levels. This change would probably happen a little later since it didn't majorly start until they were years past from permanently closing but, getting a new logo & new storefront & inside design would definitely help their stores out. That's how I think Caldor could have majorly succeeded in the US & potential Markets today.
