My grandfather was a blacksmith. He died before I was born. Every winter he go to the lumber camps. It was all horse power. He got to stay warm 😂 and coffee when he wanted. My mom said he would take 10 cents with him, but always came home with it. Gotta watch the $ with 10 kids. My grandmother took care of the barn then.

Thank you for the longer video. It took me back to my younger days watching my Dad working as a farrier. You do pretty much the same way my Dad worked. He loved it when he was able to fix a problem when some of the other farriers gave up. Great seeing someone who still has the knowledge to do a great job.

I love the longer version videos as it can give you a different perspective between the hooves. I am always so amazed in the work that farriers do, and the compassion that they have for these beautiful animals. You have a relaxed and easy to listen to voice and very informative in simple terminology for some of us that have little to no knowledge of this craft. Sharing your expertise, different methods and techniques allows one to understand all that goes into farriering. Thank you... I look forward to more of these longer videos.

Hi Caleb, definitely the longer version! Truly enjoy your discussions. That's a nice looking horse and pleased the owners are getting the care needed. This next is trivial but it irksome to me. I always cleaned out my horses hooves prior to my farriers visit. I haven't seen one owner do that for you yet. Just feel it's rude. Enjoy your day!

I severed a tendon in my hand and it has never been the same and never will. The doctor said "I can fix it and then you would hate me for the rest of your life" meaning he would make it so it would not turn or twist. Didn't do it. So you are incredibly lucky to be using it.

I love this more longform content! Especially the amount of time it gives for you to explain things and elaborate on some points, talk about what possibilities/methods you considered at the time and how you think about them afterwards, etc. You have such a calm way of talking and your love for your work really shows. I also enjoy the little anecdotes and the thoughts/mindset about work and life that you share. Watching these videos feels so calming and grounding in a sea of empty, flashy, loud clickbait content - AND I feel like I'm learning things from a profession I would never have encountered. Thank you for sharing your work and the care and effort you take to make these videos. Love from Berlin, Germany!

Thank you Caleb! I really enjoyed the longer video and how you explain the process of your trade. I am glad you were able to help this horse with giving him some comfort by working with the vet and a great shoeing job. It’s too bad that 2raw2ride dude didn’t use you for his farrier work. The horror those two horses have been put though is a shame, even though the ride is done, those horses are somewhere in Montana getting dumped as if they were expendable garbage. 😢

Thank you for your calm and clear explanations. I know nothing about horses but I know I love horses and as a retired nurse I find your videos fascinating. Had to switch from watching the cow videos because they don’t wash the hooves off so there’s manure all over the wounds and they don’t irrigate an open draining abscess and other stuff like that. This drives me absolutely crazy because of my training as a nurse! LOL! Working on horses seems much cleaner and that appeals to my nursing sensibilities. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks, I guess! 😂 Anyway, for me, the longer the videos the better. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and expertise and for your gentle manner with the horses.

I never trimmed my horse's soles, I rode on barefoot along gravel roadsides and rocky logging roads 90% of the time and that kept his soles perfect, I used a Surform dry wall rasp (I did dry wall) to take his hoof walls down. If there was any thrushy smell I would take him down to the saltwater inlet to soak his feet then up the creek or a rinse, it was amazing to see a bright white line after the creek. He was never lame in his 33 years. I can't understand why horse owners hand their horse over to you without clean feet.

‘Make my shoes look better’ - it’s not about looking better - it’s about being FUNCTIONAL. It is better to leave the hoof wall alone. You didn’t do much rasping of the hoof wall but some farriers take it to the extreme and it infuriates me. You don’t need to make the hoof look pretty by rasping the outer wall. The outer hoof wall is the horses strength.
