I’ve done this many times as a boy and noticed that you approached slowly and reassured mama constantly. What I always did, and you seemed to do too, was put the calf between you and the mother. Because we had dairy cows my job was to pick the calf up and carry it to the barn, not just check it to see if it was heifer, I would wait until the mother’s attention wandered and then gently scoop up the newborn and begin walking to the barn. I also kept up a constant flow of reassuring talk to the mother. Some had stronger maternal instincts than others varied in how upset they were with their calf being carried, but they wouldn’t try to hurt me as long as I was holding the calf. I always backed through the cow’s stall in the barn and put the calf in the manger so the mother could give it her undivided attention. Most cows were not upset if you left them with the calf for a while.

Ya most of are cows bluff but there's one that will not I always check gender so I know if they get banded or not I like to band them the first day or two so it doesn't affect their growth like it will when there older
