My grandparents had a farm, and sometime during the 1950s he had a milk cow that broke her leg. The vet said there was nothing they could do for her and to put her down. Grandpa had a different plan... he ended up hoisting her up in a makeshift cradle, and kept her off her feet for around 6 weeks, and not only did she survive, she was fine for years. The vet was shocked...😁

I was thinking the same thing about a hoist. They do it with horses i believe.

Chris Ferrell that’s very rarely done with horses! Severely Broken legs just don’t end well! Look at the racehorse barbaro for reference. Broke his leg in the Preakness, did surgery to pin, screw and plate everything together, weeks of being in a sling, preventive care to reduce the chances of developing laminitis/founder in the good limbs. Came out of it in ok shape and was being hand walked at one point. They walked into his stall one day and the life was gone from his eyes. He just wasn’t the same horse he had been through the whole ordeal. Turns out he had developed a severe case of laminitis and ended up being euthanized. It’s not generally the fracture that kills horses but supporting leg lameness that takes them out!

When we had a calf with a broken leg, our vet said to leave him alone and it would heal on its own, so that's what we did, and it healed by itself without any complications. But his mom stayed with him and the other cows would always have 1 of them by him , when his mom went to get water

Years ago my boyfriend's Dad built a little trailer that we use to move calves. You can fit 2 in at once if needed, like in the case of twins, and the cow can still see and smell them. Whenever we bring a calf up because it is sick or injured we use that trailer, hooked to the back of a 4 wheeler, and the cow almost always follows us. It sure beats having to chase mom around trying to get her to go where you want.

I use the quad bike sheep lambing trailer that I have. It has individual compartments for ewes that can be used for calves. The gates are mesh so the cow can see the calf and smell it. Poor Erin.....unfortunately the farm/ranch ALWAYS comes first! Learned that growing up...you never asked or bought anything in the Spring...that $$ was needed for seed and gas....in the Fall (if harvest was bang on) you might get something you had wanted 6-7 months before! We should all show our Mother's every single day how important and how loved they are....one day doesn't really convey the feelings we have for our Mom's. Pick another day to do some special things for Mom....heck, surprise her once in a while and Mother's Day will go on all year long!

We’re in week four with our heifer calf that had a broken rear leg. She got her cast off last week. Her break was between the knee & fetlock. Thankfully momma isn’t crazy. They should be going back to the herd this week. I think fencing is just a suggestion with crazy momma cows!!

We had cows in the pasture that was adjacent to the back yard. They kept hoping the fence so we put panels up against the fence on the pasture side, and tied them to the fence posts where we could with baler twine. Worked great, that is until they started into the neighbors yard. 🙄😂

"Mom's in a lot better mood." **Cow 117 immediately challenges Mike by shaking her head at him. 20 seconds later she is charging and Mike scrambles over the fence** Have you considered keeping a gentle steer or even a dairy cow in the pens as a companion bovine for when they need to be separated from the herd?

Eh When they are mad there is nothing but time and getting where they want that will help. At least with my great uncle's Angus cows. The one that rammed my great uncle and kept ramming the fence(#1) when he was hopping fence #2 didn't calm for a couple days. She went after his daughter in law, and DIL was on other side of the fence. Rammed at others helping other cattle with calves in other areas of the corrals. Needless to say she became someone's food later that year.

My first calf was born on mother day and on my birthday and the cow a had 22 tag number. She was in labor whole day I could not get her to the cow chute so the vet could check to see how she was doing . She become protective over calf before she even had the calf she 10 has been through it many times before but, now she's calmed down. It nice pretty good size healthy bull calf that my Dad and Pastor thought that there was very unlikely chance that calf would make it. I came and checked on it when got home from church seen that were no progress my Dad was fixing to leave then I heard the calf bawling before it was completely out they were both walk within about hour. It definitely mothers day I will never forget.

We live in Wyoming as well. We were given a calf less than 24 hours old that has a broken leg toward the top . Broken enough to feel it, on his back right leg. He never really got to learn how to use his legs without a break . He was a big calf for a first time momma. He either hit momma’s pelvis or a rock or something when he dropped. The vet said it would heal up by just feeling it. The vet said no pain meds, until they are a few months old because it’s hard on their kidneys. The calf wants to hobble around, but he isn’t wanting to eat much. I’ll have to ask them about that paste. I don’t doubt the calf is hurting.

Ah. Well yes - ranch life as i see it through your lens is definitely never boring. Erin - good job emulating a cow pony. Happy Mother's Day! I think you may want a do-over on Mother's Day - if so i totally back you on that! Or maybe just a dinner out - when dinner out becomes a thing again. Prayers are being offered for Sir Hops A Lot. Cow 117 might not like the prayers i am offering on her behalf - but if she suddenly calms down and pays more attention to Sir Hops A Lot - and he recovers - then she got the best of those prayers! Good job Mike! For the back - from personal experience - cold on the hurting part applied as long as you can tolerate it - at least a half hour - several times in the first 24 hours. Then repeat with a heating pad to replace the ice pack, using several times a day until better or until your temper rivals Cow 117.

Upset mama moo = freight train on 4 legs. Got real good at run, jump and dive / climb over fence, or onto tractor. 😃 learning to pole vault would have had its advantages at times. 😄

That’s exactly where one of my kittens broke her leg. She jumped down off a high place. I had to keep her confined for several weeks and give an antibiotic so she wouldn’t develop osteomyelitis

Hey Erin, hope the rest of your Mother's Day was good and you had an enjoyable day with your sweet family!💐 I can't get over that mom jumping so many fences. Gosh, she must have been madder than a hornet to be corralled and not with her herd, talk about temper tantrums! Just glad she only broke fences and not her own leg unlike her poor baby. Sure hope the little calf heals quickly and is able to walk good. Hope #117 settles down and doesn't escape anymore. She seemed so friendly out in the field but was a turncoat after being pinned up.

I always found that when i raised bottle holsteins that a large dog crate works well for calves. We had a large one that we could strap into the bed of the truck and was easy to secure them.

Mom 117 needs a Valium "mothers little helper" I believe it's called, so she can calm down a bit. Poor little guy, I thought for sure when you said the vet couldn't do anything that "Veal Cutlets" was soon to follow.

I nearly had a heart attack when she came for you Mike! My great uncle raises Angus and a pissed off mom put him in ICU for a couple weeks, one eye is still not great 2 years later. Surgeon had never seen such a messed up face. He almost died. He hopped two fences at 79 yrs old and drove a mile home to get my great aunt. Good catch seeing her switch gears!! Poor Erin on Mother's Day!

I live in PA and the fields my land backs up to the farmer just got done spraying with manure and God knows what. So I am watching this in Smell-O-Vision

So happy we don't have a cow such as this cow here. There is one cow, #12 that is stubborn as heck. I avoid her when I can. I hope the calf recovers as best as he can.

It's amazing you don't have that happen more often! Glad you're showing people what it's like on the ranch good and bad. Some people watching don't understand the hazards as well as the cost as that vet want free especially on a Sunday!

By the way you mentioned your last name when you called the vet. I don’t know if you want to keep your last name private or not. I sure do on my channel. I wish you guys the best. God bless you, your family, ranch, and channel. I am praying for farmers and ranchers that they will come through these times and prosper again. I appreciate agriculture businesses. It is hard to eat without them.

I'm a farmer, I have 60 beef cattle and 140 sheep. I get approximately 2 lambs a year with broken legs. I use 3 pieces of tobacco sticks and brace the leg at its entirety, from the ankle to the shoulder and it works 90%of the time. Don't listen to the vet, brace the calfs leg.

I just watch the video of the With the broken leg I didn’t watch it all the way through yet but I want to tell you on my ranch I had a calf that had a broken leg and I took some PVC pipe cut it in half and I took some bandage stuff like a stocking and pulled it up and then use female napkin to pad it and I made sure the sharp edges at the tops and bottoms rolled it over like a sock so didn’t cut into his leg send him back out mama and we watched him for a while and he did fantastic guy had working for me I said you better go take that off his leg he had to get on his horse to catch him but it worked good luck on yours enjoy your videos take care be safe
