This song gives you a glimpse of what so many immigrants feel. Leaving behind their homes and their families in hopes of being able to provide for them. It’s hard not to be infuriated by all the racism and hatred that the country is harboring against these people simply for the fact that they aren’t considered “legal”. My respects to everyone that has had to make the choice of leaving their country and loved ones to come to a country that hardly accepts them.

Correct translation It’s been almost 14 years since I was in my homeland, where I was born. Everything’s changed and I pray to God they don’t forget me. My mother died and my father says he’s too old now and he doesn't want to come, and I can't go there, and I can't go there. I've been working and working, I haven't seen the sun for days. My kids are grown ups and I can't understand them. They don't speak Spanish. They haven’t felt fear, those who haven’t seen a Border Patrol truck or a deportation, or a deportation. Wearing my boots and hat I’m often seen by the freeway. Gardener, cook, I do it all the same. Like they say, "anyways" And even if they look down at me I keep my head up drinking from a bottle (i.e. beer). Either way I'm a good friend and Mexican too. Mexican to the bone. (And with much affection, from 50 Caliber, corrido for the raza) Life isn’t easy, much less here, what they say isn’t true. I know by just remembering the thousands of crosses I saw in the desert. The nights are sad, thinking over and over of the ones who didn’t make it (i.e. died trying to cross the border) time passes by. And thinking of seeing my old man, of seeing my old man. Nevertheless, I’m so grateful to God for everything he has given me. I send regards to all my cousins, aunts, uncles and siblings. With sad eyes and tired steps, Juanito promises he’ll be visiting you all . And hugging y’all,. And hugging y’all. Wearing my boots and hat I’m often seen by the freeway. Gardener, cook, I do it all the same. Like they say, "anyways" And even if they look down at me I keep my head up Drinking from a bottle. Either way I'm a good friend and Mexican too. Mexican to the bone.

Man, i cried while listening to this song. This type of music genre isn’t my favorite to listen to but damn.... what a beautiful song, it speaks nothing but the truth. I came to the USA when i was 17 years old, and it took 16 years for me to see and hug my mother. She was able to get a visa and came to visit me. It was such a beautiful moment in my life but at the same time it was a little heart breaking to see how old she is now and with so many health problems that i don’t know if she will be able to flight once again to come see me.

Almost 14 years Without going to my land Where i was born Everything has changed I beg my god They (his family) don't forget about me. My mother died And my father says That is already very old And he doesn't want to come (elders may have the chance to get a tourist visa to come to US without much trouble) And I not able to go And I not able to go (he is an illegal immigrant) Working and working Many days pass by that I don't see the sun My children are older And i don't understand them They don't speak Spanish They have not felt the fear Those who have not seen A Migration truck, Or to a deportation Or to a deportation (This part is a little hard to translate literally but he's talking about people who don't fear or worry about getting deported, deportation means to lose everything they have here including family) . Chorus: With [little] boots on and hat I've been seen often Down the freeway Gardener or cook I still do it, they say, anyways (Another hard to be literal "me la rifo" may be considered slang sort of, means you do something right without complaining even if is hard or painful in some sort of way) And even if they look down on me I Face up [while] I drink my beer (another hard expression, enpinandome un bote" the process of lifting or lowering a can, in this case beer has other connotations too not just this depends on the context of the conversation) However I am a friend And also a mexican Mexican to the core Chorus ends here- Life is not easy And less here What they say is not true (People in Mexico tend to believe we come here make lots of money easy and have a luxury life compared to what they struggle every day back there to survive. He's referring to that in this part, life is not easy here what they say is not true) Just remembering The thousands of crosses I saw in the desert (when he was crossing the border, a sign of what fate he could be facing, he was able to cross "safely" but others didn't make it, therefore a lot bear this guilt) The nights are sad Thinking and thinking In those who stayed behind (this part is a little tricky he could be taking about the people who didn’t make it or didn’t cross or his family, parents, siblings, beloved ones who stayed in Mexico) Time goes by And in seeing my old man And in seeing my old man (thinking in those whom I left behind and thinking I want to see my father) More than grateful I am with my god For what he has given me I send a greeting To all my cousins My uncles and brothers With sad eyes And I a tired step Juanito promises That he is going to visit them And [to be able to] hug them And [to be able to] hug them ( with sad eyes because he knows is not able to go so, it may never happen, he’s promising something he can’t do) chorus repeats: You’re welcome, now I have to go watch videos of cute kittens to heal my soul after this song. It breaks me every time 😢

I can't listen to this song without tearing up... my dad lost his mother last month very suddenly and decided to risk not coming back and losing everything he's built for himself over here in order to see her one last time, after 17 years, at her funeral. My mom lost her dad last year and didn't get to say her last goodbyes. She hopes that she'll get the opportunity to see her mom again. My heart aches for them, all I can do is show them that I'm grateful for everything they've done by hopefully graduating from a top university with my Sociology and Political Science degrees this Spring. This one hits... I will speak from a personal standpoint. I came here when I was 3, living in "fear"* for 10+ years till we finally got that appointment for residency. Even after getting residency (2000/2001), it took my dad for his father to be sick and eventually pass while there, for him to go back to Monterrey (2002). After that, it was not until last year in may, that I took him back. It was not because he did not want to go back. But because he always put/s work first before anything else that gets in the way of making a living. *"Fear" - I quote it because we do live in it, but we hide it and just live life as it's thrown at us. Gracias Jamel. Thank you brother.

My grandfather worked his ass off to make sure while my dad grew up they didn’t have to struggle, even though they did sometimes. I’m grateful for that fact that my grandparent wanted a better future for my dad cause now me and my family are living a good life.

I really really loved your reaction to the strong message of the song because as a Mexican you feel out of place in this (racist) country (the irony - most of the west coast belonged to Mexico once upon a time) and you feel like people are always trying to knock your culture for invaluable and look down upon you as the song says and this goes for some Mexican Americans as well - the ones who have not forgotten their roots. But you took it to a beautiful level Jamel with your message and showing love to Mexicans and a shot of tequila my friend :) ... I always have thought your strong culture and Mexicans have much in common because this country has ripped them apart physically and mentally, taken advantage of them since the beginning and yet they push forward with what little they have. We are essentially like brothers. Much love to you, Thank you for your Great Reactions very heartfelt.

Super great full to be a Mexican, and also having a mother that came to the United States to provide for he family in Mexico not only that but supporting 5 kids with a dad that got deported to Mexico ❤️🙏🏻 my mom gave me so much and I’m finally giving her everything, she always had 2 jobs working mornings and overnights, we lived in a 2 bedroom appointment with a family of 6 including my mom and I’m great full to say she’s finally getting her own house in a week that we’ll be paying off in the next 20-25 years to own. To bad my father isn’t here with us to see how far we came 🙏🏻 never had it easy but doing the best we can to provide for her now ❤️

Love this song!!! I tear up every time I hear it. One of my favs. Reminds me of my father, who immigrated to the US when he was 18 yrs old, 1952. Yes, he immigrated by foot. He was a miner in the NM mountains. He would leave as early as 4am and sometimes would not get home until 6p. Being poor, he couldn't make trips to Mexico to visit his family. I recall the day my grandmother passed away, my father called me and cried because he couldn't afford to go to see her when she was ill. RIP my dear daddy, my Guardian angel...Grateful for all the sacrifices you made for me. I'm proud to be Mexican! Jamel_AKA_Jamal...Thank you for loving our music, our stories!
