The California Beekeeper

Күн бұрын

Commercial Beekeeper and Queen Breeder, Jose Uribe, heads to three different mating nuc yards located in Butte County, California on a 111 degree day. In the first nuc yard he was scheduled to catch queens because we had 300 cells coming off. Unfortunately due to the intense heat wave we were experiencing, Jose found the majority of the bees had either absconded or cooked to death.
This is one of the many struggles we face as a Northern California queen breeder. Sometimes its ants, sometimes it bears, skunks, or raccoons... right now its heat. All of the queens that were found alive but appeared stressed had to be eliminated in order to not compromise the quality of our product.
If you are new to our channel, welcome! We are a small family owned and operated commercial apiary located in Northern California. We've been commercial beekeeping for the past 12 years, but branched off and opened Uribe Honey Bees in January of 2019, and launched our KZfaq channel in April of 2020. We specialize in queen breeding, pollination services, hive management and brokering.
Thank you for watching and supporting us! We love you guys!

If you placed an order for queens with us this year… thank you! We are passionate about what we do and are working on making a big difference in the industry. If you would like to place an order, please contact us at 530-354-7794 or visit our website at www.thecaliforniabeekeeper.com.

Gary, it is tough but it's something becoming normal out here in the western part of the U.S. We must adapt and figure out better ways to run our queen production in climates like this. Beekeeping is challenging trade and we are always learning better was. They bees definitely let us know what we need to do🥵. Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words Gary. I don’t Kelvin! I bet that was rough! What is not normal is not getting the rain and warm winters often. These drought periods seem they are longer and longer. Maybe it wouldn’t seem so bad about having droughts. The farming just plays a huge part in water scarcity.

Not a fan of the mini nuc... The issue is really the temperature the bees can keep the hive. They need water to cool it. Bees survive in deserts as long as they can find water. I saw you had some area's with tree cover, possibly keep the mini's there and go for a 3-5 frame deep to give them enough bees to cool the space. You could also put a covered water trough up high enough to keep animals out.

Yes before I read any of the comments, those bees need shade! You are frying them in the Sun. You have to add some cardboard or plywood or anyting to shade them. Also they need a water source cool water. You could spray foam around a 5 gallon bucket water and even if you have to fill it up with ice everyday, you have to have something to hydrate and keep those bees going. They will not make it on the BBQ Grill. Just thought I would throw in my two cents because I know beekeeping is hard work, but you have to break the Sun, and Supply some cold water. 100 degree water will not cool their hive. Build you an insulated waterer and fill it with cold water and ice. The bees in the shade are getting by
@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper
@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper 3 жыл бұрын
Larry, really appreciate the great feedback. We have a great water source but maybe a few 5 gallons buckets in the future might help so dont have to fly over to the pond. 👌 Appreciate the support and thank you for watching.😁

Another thot, pallets are free and they are everywhere. Stand 2 on edge and put one half way up making an H. Takes six screws. Then put a half sheet of ply on top. You can do 6 on the ground and 6 on the mid level for 12. This gets 24 covered for one sheet of ply and 12 screws. Or, use old tarps on the top and its even cheaper.
