Always use just sandcrabs for bait (maybe not available there?) On the barred perch here in so. Cal. Great job with the lures on some slab BSP!

We get sand Crabs yes but we get the big ones on lures

I use a 1-1 1/2 ft leader. I have caught them with straight braid but I'm had more hookups with a leader

I went last weekend with my son to try and target surf perch. We had 4 different types of bait including this lure. Is this thing supposed to float on top of the water or sink deeper? I found myself tiring out always having to cast these out and then reel them back in less than a min or so. Should these be used during low-tide and if so, do you need to venture into the water further with your waders to cast it out further? I'm using a medium-heavy Ugly Stik 9ft rod with a 5000 Penn Reel and I also wear waders. Thanks for any advice! As for fish we caught, we each caught jacksmelt and they bit our lines and liked feasting on the ghost shrimp we were using for bait. Got scared to eat them as they're known to have worms in their flesh.

A 5000 reel would tire you out quickly casting multiple times. The reels ive used for surf fishing are 3500 & 3000 lighter in weight. My rods are medium-medium heavy 10 ft. My main one is 10"7. The Calissa lure is a slow sinking bait. You don't necessarily need to wade out and cast far for surf perch but I have caught them at the end of a cast @50+yards and as close as 3 ft from my feet. I've fished neer high tide and low tide. In my experience it don't matter but I've always had more success as long as it's an incoming tide

I try to sling it as far as I can but a lot of fish are in close. Throw it anywhere between 30-50yrds average
