Its strange to see this very pretty lady from such long way back still up there after all this time performing that great song, now in advanced age - but her spirit shines through and she is enjoying herself - may she continue to live well in these golden years. This era was something special, it brings back such vivid memories of growing up, these songs stay with you forever!

Love is the only one of the BB's....the rest are his current collection of musicians. Love still plays the tambourine. Noticed he still likes to hear himself talk...and talk. And, by the way, Love and his band destroyed 'California Dreaming'. Needed a Brian Wilson arrangement. Would have thought Brian still owned the name and rights....but guess not. Anyway...great to see Michelle. And Brian's daughters and Michelle's daughter are 'Wilson Phillips'.

Michelle Phillips said she wrote some of the lyrics for this song, including the part about the visit to the church. Interestingly, the Beach Boys sing the lyrics the way they are commonly presented: "I pretend to pray." However, Michelle sings them the way she says she wrote them: "I began to pray."

For decades I thought they were singing "I began to pray," but recently I hear I pretend to pray which never made sense. Why would you write it that way, who would stop in a church and pretend to pray, except to impress the priest or someone with you?

@@allphase If I'm the person telling the story I am thinking of California because I hate the cold and the fact that the preacher likes the cold is not likely to influence me to stay. If I have any kind of hope that there is a God I stop at the church to pray sincerely and presumably I am acquainted with the preacher and want to hear his opinion.

Great Sound! It would make sense the Beach Boys would do a version of "California Dreaming. It just seems like it could be a song of theirs. It is great to see Mike Love doing well. He always seemed the healthiest of the group.

Michelle wrote the lyrics about the church and the priest and the kneeling on the his knees, Papa John hated the church lyrics but it was an instant success, the flute solo was never rehearsed, a total improvisation and the flutist nailed it. Barry McGuire's version of this song and his harmonica solo a complete disaster, but thanks to Barry this song became an instant success.

@Estaban B - Yes (Bruce is there, too). He's owned the name for touring only since 1998, which was agreed upon by Al Jardine, Brian Wilson and the estate of Carl Wilson. He can record under the name The Beach Boys but only if Brian Wilson is involved. You probably know all this anyway.

Absolutely. Michelle´s vocals are barely audible in this clip anyway. The female vocal could have been anyone for that matter. Otherwise, a poor version. The Beach Boys do their routine well, but sound nothing like The Mamas & The Papas, whose legacy in music is intact, unlike the undignified cash-in tours of the Beach Boys in recent years.

I do like the cover from the 80's, but the current line-up of The Beach Boys sucks without Brian. Your better off seeing Brian's band with Al Jardine in it than seeing the Beach Boys. I saw both bands last year and Brian's band blew Love's out of the water.

Michelle Phillips was sweet, but could not sing a note. They would quiet her mike. She was there for the looks. But it worked.

+Artsy H. You couldn't be doing her a greater injustice if you tried with such an insensitive, not to mention grossly inaccurate comment. Her voice balanced Cass's and controlled it. It added high range harmonies not any of them could hit and gave songs like Monday Monday and Dedicated to The One I Love their finishing touches. The only time her mic was fucked up was at the Monterey Festival which is sadly their only recorded live concert and by all of their admission, their worst. Do yourself a favour and explore the band's later material if you really want to appreciate her voice and what a hugely important contribution it was to the group.
