These quakes were like following me wherever I'd be believe it or not. I lived in Oxnard from 85-87 and had experienced those Socal quakes during the time of the Richard Ramirez "The Night stalker" thing. I moved to SF in Dec 87 where I lived and went through the Loma Prieta in 89 and today @5:04PM will mark it's 30th anniversary. Richard Ramirez was transferred to SF too for his case/trial there. As a kid, those were definitely some of the most memorable years for me, especially when it comes to sports, it was all about the bay area, immediately after I moved to SF, The 49ers became Superbowl champs again (the team of the 80's) The SF Giants and the Oakland A's in Battle of the Bay. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. I moved back down to Socal, SGV in Oct 91 and stayed there until 94 and had experienced those quakes there then and survived the Rodney King riot there too. I moved out of Socal to back up here in SF In May 94 and made it my permanent home just right before the OJ thing. No more moving since. Thank God and may God bless everyone! California Love! : )

I wasn’t there but I was in Fairbanks Alaska on June 10 when we had 3 earthquakes back to back. They were reported as a 7.2, 7.0, and 6.8. I couldn’t even get across the room to my baby son. They later said that the perma frost under Fairbanks saved the city. We were still having aftershocks of 5.0 when I left the following year. I never minded the cold but the earthquakes terrified me.

I was working at Disneyland at the time. I was on the graveyard shift for Fantasmic! maintenance. Me and a co-worker had poked our heads into The Country Bear Jamboree attraction when the earthquake hit. The Elvis bear started gyrating like the King himself. We went back to Tom Sawyer's island and discovered a natural gas leak on Fantasmic!. We shut the valves and the leak was repaired the next day. Also, the dragon door had started opening and slamming during the quake, so they installed earthquake pins to hold the door in place in case of another earthquake.

No going back to sleep while the quake gently rocks your bed. We have Cascadia to worry about, forecasted to be a magnitude 9. Preps, food water, basic sanitation in place outside in a very flexible kennel. It's not going to be pretty.

I was hoping this documentary would give me more recent data. I lived through the Northridge quake and moved to the mid-west US to avoid any further problems from earthquakes. After 26 years a 6.5 magnitude should have occurred somewhere in the L.A. area, judging by the frequency of big quakes in S. California. Now I learn there's a bigger fault directly under downtown L.A. that hasn't moved in millennia...I'm very glad I moved and dearly hope everyone there is safe. The 'ground turning to quicksand' doesn't appeal to me either. The documentary treated the very destructive Northridge quake as 'run of the mill', and to reasonably expect a much larger quake fairly soon. Time to start moving, people, and don't go to Detroit or New Orleans, or you'll be switching deck chairs on the Titanic.

Bc of this earthquake our whole family ended up moving to the mid-west also (Nebraska) our building had to be torn down since we were displaced of our apartment. We camped in a church parking lot FEMA gave our family money and off we got in a train and ended up here.

Daybreak Thousand Oaks Ca. Northridge quake. I go to turn off the gas outside because I could see now. All the dads in the neighborhood are turning their gas off too. We wave, ask if they're all right. My house is ankle deep in wall hangings, the wall, everything on any shelf is on the floor. Huge dish cabinet knocked over, chimney fell over. No hot water for a week. Ralph's supermarket front had broken windows, sandbags and shotguns. You told the manager what you needed, they would get it then we would negotiate a price. A big ol' aftershock hit & made everybody (in unison in a long line) slowly move away from the building. I went into my work, a Dr's office. Literally up to our knees in building material and what was thrown off the shelves - a lot of supplies!

subduction zone where 1 plate goes under the other are the most destructive. a strike slip fault quake would be lucky to cause a jolt stronger than a 7.5 but a subduction plate can cause quakes as strong as 9.0-9.5 or higher. subduction zones also create mountains and volcanoes
@jannisares7 жыл бұрын
Derek Wall Exactly right. Oregon and Washington state have subduction faulting with the Juan de Fuca plate subducting under the North American plate. A quake with a subduction fault lasts for minutes, not in seconds like here. You would make a good geologist if you aren't already in that direction with your education.

Tornado1994 It happened so quickly and suddenly, all I could do was stay frozen in bed screaming. Sounds silly, but in the midst of a crisis, we as humans sometimes do the opposite of what we should've done to protect ourselves from danger. I hope we don't have another for a long long time!

kittywhiskerz I was in Loma Prieta '89. That actually occurred during Tuesday Evening Rush Hour. Although we lived in Novato, we felt it pretty bad. The house shook for 10 seconds. I remember my Stepdad telling me to stand still and don't move. My Mom was at Safeway up the hill getting Dinner, took her an hour to get back.

In the 90's I experienced a 5.1 as a kid in Tacoma Washington as a kid. Lasted less then 45 seconds, houses in the area rode the quake fine, only a few collapsed chimneys, heard of no fatalities. Our house just had 1 or 2 cracks in the plaster. But mom spent 2 weeks sanding out the micro cracks in the wood floor. I remember the floor undulating like water ripples. Scary stuff.

It's weird how sometimes everything is fine. The 7.2 in 2010 in Christchurch had no deaths and 2 injuries. One baker had a rack fall on him and another guys chimney fell through the roof and broke his leg. It was like 4.30am. A lot of damage but nothing too bad. Then the 2011 Christchurch quake killed 182! Super shallow 6.3. It hit at lunch time, and two buildings that slipped through inspection pancaked. Still a lot of damage but most of the buildings that would have fell had already been demolished. And then the Kaikoura quake in 2016 was a 7.8 and only killed 2 people, in really rural old homes. And the damage was crazy, it was 2 minutes long and the damage was as far as Wellington.

The Coalinga earthquake wiped out the entire downtown, it was old fashioned b2 story brick buildings, a really old-west looking town with wooden sidewalks! About half the homes and businesses in town were destroyed, some never rebuilt, like the "lacy" restaurant, which is sad, place had wonderful food!

also thanks. i remember all three also and the easter morning quake south of el centro i have not heard anybody mention that when the big on happens.. its going to shake for minutes.. not 15 seconds like northridge or a minute like sylmar. my sister lived in bouquet canyon.. she and her husband were tossed into the air twice during northridge. worst thing. all the reservoirs above santa clarita. and perhaps the ones in the inland empire..will the dams hold for minutes of shaking.
@NextQuake9 жыл бұрын
That's right. A lot of people talk about the strength of the shaking but just as important, and in many cases much more important, is the duration of the shaking, as you said.

Three years before I was born, my mother recalls trying to run down the hall of a Santa Monica apartment and being tossed from wall to wall while my father was thrown out of bed. They both worried the building would give way and trap them in the underground parking lot four stories below them.

This was significant, but hardly a monster quake.
@allandavis82014 жыл бұрын
It really depends on your definition of “monster”, if you live in a place that suffers from quakes on a regular basis, and again “regular”is up for debate, you might be immune to the small ones and so a larger quake becomes a minor one in your mind, but if you live in a region that doesn’t have any or only has them infrequently then a minor quake becomes a monster.
