Forcados are traditional Portuguese bullfighters who participate in the unique and culturally rich practice of the “pega de cara” or face catch. This tradition dates back to the 17th century and involves a group of eight men, known as a “grupo de forcados,” who confront the bull bare-handed. Unlike their Spanish counterparts, forcados do not use capes or swords. Instead, they employ teamwork, courage, and precise timing to subdue the bull by grabbing its head and bringing it to a stop. The front man, or “forcado da cara,” challenges the bull head-on, while the remaining forcados provide support and control.
