California Surf Fishing: Chasing Calico Bass, Cabezon, & Rockfish

An afternoon catching reef fish in the Southern California surf. Featuring cabezon, rockfish, calico bass, and a leopard shark; all caught from shore. Bait of choice for the session was squid.
From San Diego to Santa Barbara, the SoCal coastline supports an abundance of wildlife (birds, fish, mussels, etc.). This is the first entry in our new series highlighting the diverse beach landscapes and opportunities available to surf fishermen in our local waters.

Other than the Leopard, I don't see fish like those from the shore at Santa Monica Beach 😅. Nice job!

Perhaps you were fishing sandy beach? Calicos, cabezons and rockfish all live in reefs. If you fish sandy bottom you usually get croakers, corbinas, surf perch, etc. Leopard sharks could be caught in both sandy and rocky bottoms.

These are fine catches. Well done! I fish a similar way - long pole, heavy sinker, in the reefs. I usually use shrimps for bait. I noticed a black "cork" atop your hook. What is it? What does it do? Keep your hook above the bottom? Seems you do not use the upper part of the squid. Do you throw away the tube?

Awesome! We use the tube once we run out of heads. As for the black object atop the hook, it's something we've been developing the last couple of months. It indeed functions similar to what you're suggesting

12 ft rod rated 3-8oz. Reel is 5000 series

It's a 12' rod capable of casting heavier weights. I'll have to ask my brother the exact model

I’ve caught 2 leopard sharks one was about 2 ft. long & they try & bite you that’s why you see it turning it’s head it’s an instinct I’m sure it just wants to get away.

Yes it's their instinct. But they aren't too dangerous
