For decades, many California teens convicted of serious crimes-- like robbery, assault, and murder-- were sent to state juvenile prisons. Now, they're closing. Watch as CalMatters reporter Elizabeth Aguilera explains this new law.

What the hell? This is absolutely absurd. I've known teenage monsters that were straight up psychopaths with murders on their hands. I know some were misguided but their some that are just plain out cold hearted from birth

This decision may be because of funding and/or, in part, the theory that the human brain is not fully developed until the age of 25. A psychologist told me that most people have sociopathic tendencies until the age of 25. Also, half of the population is below intelligence.

Age 16.....Preston 04-06....Pine Grove Fire camp 06-09 ......these facilities taught me alot, on accountability and responsibility. I was able to see a future and purpose other than the street, during my time at Pine grove....Even as an MD#, I was glad the state gave me a chance to transfer to Pine Grove.

DJJ had to change, the worst thing you can do for troubled teen is take them away from their family just to surround them with other troubling youth. Plus ever since they reduced CYA population by changing its name and Juvenile Sentencing, only teens that habitually commit the most violent crimes go to DJJ (murder, rape, arson, brutal gang assualts.) And if a young teenager is so disconnected from reality that their capable of commiting such violence, they obviously need mental help as opposed to just a punishment.

Not at all. They still receive the same sentencing minimums, this just makes it so they can be closer to family. Why take a troubled teen away from their family just to stick them around other troubled youth. Plus ever since 2008, only juveniles that have committed the worst of the worst crimes were sent to DJJ (murder, rape, arson, brutal gang assualts.) And if a young teenager is so disconnected from reality that their capable of commiting such violence, they obviously need mental help as opposed to just a punishment. Keep the youth close to their family so they can be evolved in their rehabilitation. Its a good call.

In my day it was called "California Youth Authority" [CYA] which is prison for kids. The goal should be to rehabilitate so they do not re-offend. Juvenile Hall or the adult prison system is not the place for this and the children would likely become "Institutionalized"

There were 11 yr old killers in SRCC in 87 when I was in there. Definitely at the least high level state mental hospital then. It's just a name either way.

This is horrible! I’m an Probation Officer in California for one of the new county DJJ facilities. Gaven NewSCUM changed all the policies that pertain to the treatment and use of force of these young me (18-25). If they fight or assault staff they get put in their rooms literally for 10mins-2hrs and then they get to come out of their rooms for rd2! These politicians who know nothing about being an Officer really need to work one day in a unit before they start changing policies they know NOTHING about..

Wait are there new County level facilities dedicated to housing only DJJ inmates? I thought they were just being sent back to Juvenile Hall. But i definetely dont believe in the lack of enforcement you are describing, that is nonsense. I hope things have gotten better since you posted this comment.

You have been misled by the administration. You can sanction and discipline the minors within policy. Most staff, including administration do not not know policy or what they are doing. Read the manual and apply accordingly, or else you will have problems for the rest of your career. Pick up those directives and educate yourself. Don't put your life or career at risk.

Pretty much juveniles will stay in the juvenile detention center until the age of 18 (if charged as an adult) and get transferred to County Jail then to State or Federal Prison

Just because they are young it doesnt mean they have no conscious about their actions, the reason young seem to see it no wrong doing crimes is because their parents lack of ethics education that you learn in home. Teachers are there to teach skillful knowledge not morale knowledge, for that go to a priest.
