Rainy Days in the United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, the number of days with measurable rainfall varies across regions, but on average, it rains about 133 days a year. This figure can be higher in certain areas, especially in the west and north of the country.
Wettest Part of the UK -
The wettest part of the UK is the western Highlands of Scotland. Specifically, the town of Fort William is often cited as one of the wettest places, receiving about 4,577 millimeters (180 inches) of rainfall annually. This region experiences heavy rainfall due to its mountainous terrain and prevailing westerly winds.
Interesting Facts about UK Weather -
Variable Climate: The UK's weather is highly variable due to its geographical position, where it is influenced by several different air masses. This leads to rapid changes in weather conditions, often within the same day.
Mild Winters and Cool Summers: The UK's climate is classified as temperate maritime, resulting in mild winters and cool summers. This is largely due to the Gulf Stream, which brings warm water from the Gulf of Mexico across the Atlantic, moderating temperatures throughout the year.
Foggy Conditions: London is historically famous for its fog, particularly in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This "pea-souper" fog was a combination of natural fog and coal smoke pollution. While such severe fogs are now rare due to cleaner air regulations, the UK still experiences significant foggy conditions, especially in autumn and winter.
These aspects highlight the unique and often unpredictable nature of the UK's weather, making it a frequent topic of conversation among its residents.

It rains more in New York, it rains more in Paris, but no one moans about those cities do they? Yes, it rains here... but often it rains just a little and not for long. For example, it rained today... for about an hour around 7 a.m. I can't say that it's been sunny for the rest of the day, but my garden is sparkling, the roses are blooming, and the birds are bringing their babies out to find worms in the soft soil. What's not to like? I think Americans often complain because they come unprepared. If you slop around in cargo shorts, open sandals, and T-shirts, expect to get wet when it rains.

Apparently the greeness isn’t caused by the rain. There are other places that have more rain but are less green. It’s because of the Gulf Stream. The UK is as far North as Alaska, yet much warmer. So the UK has plants that grow in warmer areas, yet they are further North so the sunlight is not as strong. They need sunlight, so to make the most of the weak sunlight, they have more chlorophyll in the leaves. Chlorophyll is what makes plants green.

@@stevedickson5853 Not quite as north as Alaska for mainland Britain, although given most of the US-Canadian border is aligned with the 49th parallel and Land's End is 50 degrees North (Lizard Point is 49 degrees 57 minutes North) the entirety of the UK is north of the majority of the Canadian border. Toronto is further south, so its latitude is approximately the same as that of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. @@californianreacts , were is the rain falling because Kent is usually in a drought , Cornwall not so bad but Lake District and west of Scotland are wet due to the westerly winds and Gulf Stream ( storms from east coast of America ) , east coast of the GB due to North Sea . But you must remember it's only water and you're wearing the wrong clothes 😂😂 . A lot of people just don't look at the forecast or even understand it , the forecast these days are quite good and do give up to a few weeks ahead , even locals are one or two hours good , more so with phones. The rule of thumb is if it's going to rain sod the garden and go to the pub , if it's going to be hot go to the supermarket and get drinks of all sorts and do a little of the garden ( it'll be far to hot ) 😂😂😂

According to the Met Office Climate data, over the 30 year period (1991 -2020), there were 106.5 days of rainfall in London per year on average (which counts as a day in which 1mm of rainfall or over fell). This means that there was rainfall on 29 per cent of days per year and on average it didn’t rain 71 per cent of days per year. Average rainfall is 557.4mm with 1410 “sunshine hours.” There are more rainy days in Miami (at 135) and Orlando, Florida (117) than there are in London. New York City clocks in at 122 days and 1,268mm of rain. Washington DC, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, and Mexico City all have more rainy days on average in any given year than London.

Something to remember it doesn’t rain everywhere at the same time and it doesn’t rain the same length of time each time, and it doesnt rain the same ammount each time. So it can be deceptive, we can go a few weeks dry the a few days with 2 weeks worth of rain. The actual distinction in uk weather is it can change quickly and often.

Another commenter has rightly said that the Lake District had 12 inches of rain in 24 hours. 2009. Two inches they could easily have coped with. And I've heard of figures of 160 inches per year for the tops of thr mountains. Wales - where Swansea is - is notorious for rain. In Welsh it doesn't rain "cats and dogs", but "old ladies and sticks"! More of a problem for most of us in England is that - whilst the quantity of rain isn't great - we get small amounts quite frequently. Sometimes we long for the sun.

UK is a Northerly island with three weather fronts coming mostly from the stormy Atlantic Ocean. The weather changes about every ten minutes some days and as in the last weekend of cloudless blue skies, we have been severely punished in the last few days. I think the equation is something like - one hour of sunshine equals two days of drizzle and dullness. London has been reported in recent times to have had less rainfall than New York, Paris France and even Sydney Australia. Soon, we are going to struggle with water supplies to London and the Government are considering flooding huge parts of the area surrounding it to make an extra reservoir/dam. Some parts of the UK are very wet and even these places sometimes have water restrictions in place at certain times. The reservoirs/dams were built mainly in the seventies when the population was about half what it is at present. More and more cars are needing washing and ninety-nine percent of housholds have a washing machine and a lot also have dishwashers. Regards from Halifax, Yorkshire, UK.

The Met Office have 30 different classifications for weather that match up with weather symbols on weather forecasts (not including weather warnings and health alerts). Of those, 1 is for mist, 1 is for fog, 4 are for cloud, 10 are for rain (from "drizzle" through to "thunder" - partly thundery is "thunder shower"), 3 are for sleet, 3 are for hail, and 6 are for snow. So, 6 weather symbols for different cloudy conditions, 22 for precipitation conditions, 1 for cloudless sunny day, and 1 for a cloudless night. The current weather at my location is "cloudy" (not to be mistaken for "partly cloudy" where the sun can break through the clouds, or "overcast" which is basically "cloudy" with darker clouds). What the current weather forecast is where I am: today is cloudy, tomorrow is sunny, Sunday is thunderstorms (too much of a generalisation, Sunday's weather symbols are "light rain", "thunder", "thunder shower", "heavy rain shower", and partly cloudy with a chance of moonlight), Monday is rainy with some sunshine, Tuesday is cloudy, Wednesday is cloudy with a chance of rain, and Thursday is cloudy with some sunshine and a chance of rain. Of course, it is too early to tell what the weather will be at 7 AM tomorrow because you need to double-check the forecast at about 6 AM to get a better approximation of what the weather might be - that less than 5% chance of rain does not mean it is definitely not going to rain. I'll only need a jacket this week (perhaps an umbrella on Sunday depending on if I trust the forecast or my looking at the sky more), but I've only looked at Watford's forecast - if I were to go to Hemel Hempstead or London (i.e. travel 16 miles away) I would need to look at different forecasts. I've been in a Florida downpour ("heavy rain shower") that lasted about 30 minutes before. I didn't even know warm rain was possible until my one and only experience of it.

The stats for England as a nation are skewed by the north a fair bit (and more so if you look at the full UK, with northern Scotland included). It rains a lot in Northern Europe for sure, but the south has less generally speaking. I only say this as photos of London are often used to generalise the whole region (understandably as the capital), but it does tend to be 'warmer' and 'dryer' down here. But the weather can be very, very changable. Cold in the morning, warmer later, rain in the afternoon, then sun, then heavy cloud and wind. Makes it hard to dress appropriately in spring and autumn! But if cold, grey and generally quite miserable counts towards the same sentiment, then yes it's not great - summer can feel very short! But it makes it all the sweeter when it comes around.

@CoinPig
@CoinPig 2 ай бұрын
A lot of what was said in this package is not relevant - 2.4 inches of rain is no national record - or even for Seathwaite! [The UK location specific rainfall record in 24 hours is 279.4 mm or 11 inches on 18 July 1955 in Martinstown, Dorset] As I am writing this, the past 28 hours has seen 89.8 mm or 3.54 inches of rain in the same location [Seathwaite Farm raingauge] - 3.4 of which fell in the 24 hour period 9am 22 May to 9am 23 May 2024! As was mentioned though there are lots a variability across the UK - It doesn't rain 199 days a year everywhere in The UK - this is an average and it doesn't compare the amount of rain with the number of days like say in San Francisco - which has almost identical total rainfall to London. For comparison... The main difference is the distribution of that rain - most of the rain in San Francisco falls between November and April - (55 of of the 68 days or 22.5 of the 24 inches of rain falls between November and April) In London the rainfall is distributed almost equally throughout the year, although the number of rain days is slightly lower in Spring and Summer (a total of 110 days a year) and between November and April there are an average of 60 rain days and a total of 12.5 inches between November and April from a total of 24 inches per year - or just over 600mm! So San Francisco gets 93.5% in the 6 months of November to April And London gets about 52.5% in that same 6 month period...almost half and half! Both cities get the same amount of rainfall in a year, but the distribution is significantly different! Also these figures vary slightly depending on where you take the readings - London covers about 600 square miles and San Francisco covers less than 100 square miles. In addition, from year to year I'm sure San Francisco has just as a weather variability pattern as London. This example is just London [and San Francisco] and is not entirely representative of the whole of the UK - or indeed California, but does illustrate how individual places can vary and be similar in totality; but have such different weather patterns - the most significant of which is probably sunshine... London having a total of about 1630 hours and San Francisco has about 3030 hours! (London gets about 52 hours in December vs San Francisco 161 hours of sunshine - December being the dullest month in both locations and in July [the sunniest in both locations] London gets 212 hours vs San Francisco getting 313 hours - In every month San Francisco gets more sun than London on average!) There are plenty of places in both The US and around The World that get more rain than The UK - it just tends to be warmer rain! 🤣 I would have compared Los Angeles with London...but, there is no comparison, tbh...it's one of the reasons Hollywood became established in LA, after all! 😂👍

I'm 70, and lived in the UK all that time. The amount of rain we gets varies a lot depending where you live and from year to year. The West of the British Isles - Ireland, West Coast, Lake District, Wales Cornwall, get a lot more than the East. That's because a lot of our rain comes off the Atlantic - it rains on the West where it hits land before the rain clouds shed their load as they cross the mountains - many places in the East are in a rain shadow and don't get much at all. Then, we have the Jet Stream, that sits above us - if it moves north then it keeps the pressure high above us and we get hot dry weather that is pulled up from the European Continent - if it gets stuck below, or over the top of us, it stops the hot air coming up from the continent, and we get more rain than usual. Over my lifetime we have had very hot, dry summers about once every 4-5 years and a rainy cold summer about once every 4-5 years. We quite often have draughts in regions of the UK. As I said, it varies a lot - that's because we are an island in the middle of the sea.

@stevedickson5853 Yes I agree Steve. Just look at the state of things in parts of Spain at the moment. Dry weather in Winter means water shortages as people still use water. Sunny hot conditions obviously make the shortage worse and forecasts are suggesting that things could be even worse for them this year than last. This is going to seriously affect tourism, which is a huge part of their economy. Even here in Yorkshire, during dry spells, we are restricted in our water use, this is because the reservoirs aren't big enough for the population anymore. Because of past problems, the water authorities reckon to have implemented a giant network of pipes to replenish dwindling supplies from Kielder dam further up North etc... but I don't think that they have done anywhere near enough to sort things out properly. So much is wasted through leaks and they say they have got technology in place to detect these leaks using satellites, but again, I doubt that this will be enough to detect all leaks. @Rachel_M_

@@mattsmith5421 The term 'North Atlantic Oscillation' is used by meteorologists to refer to variations in the large-scale surface pressure gradient in the North Atlantic region. In the average state of the atmosphere, the North Atlantic surface pressure is relatively high in the subtropics at latitudes 20°N to 40°N ('the Azores High'), and lower further North at latitudes 50°N to 70°N (the 'Icelandic Low'). The North-South pressure difference determines the strength of the westerly winds across the Atlantic and is known as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). When the pressure difference is large, the NAO is positive and the westerly winds are strong and storms tend to be stronger, more frequent and travel across northwestern Europe. When the pressure difference is small, they travel across southern Europe. The NAO is also associated with changes in temperature and rainfall in Europe and North America. The fluctuations in the NAO occur on a wide range of time-scales. There are day-to-day changes associated with weather systems, and slower changes associated with seasonal and longer term variability, which is predictable from November for the coming winter. NAO impacts Winter (December-January-February) conditions When the NAO index is well above normal, there is an increased chance that seasonal temperatures will be higher than normal in northern Europe, northern Asia and South-East North America, and lower than normal in North Africa, North-East Canada and southern Greenland. The patterns for precipitation (rainfall, snowfall) are more localised, with an increased chance of higher rainfall in northwest Europe and lower rainfall in southern Europe. When the NAO index is well below normal, the tendencies are generally opposite. The figures below show where seasonally-averaged temperatures and rainfall are likely to be in the top or bottom one third of observed values, given that the seasonal NAO index is in the top or bottom quarter of observed values.
