The ‘Crown estate’ is essentially a type of corporation. The Crown estate owns property all across the UK, the proceeds and profits of which go directly to the UK government. The government then pays the Monarch out of these proceeds by way of a Sovereign grant, which is used to cover the running costs of the monarchy and maintenance of crown estate property. The monarch also owns property outright, the same as any commoner, which she can do with as she pleases within the rule of law.

@@californianreacts You don't need to imagine how much they made. They publish a yearly report on the property and investment portfolio of the crown estate. The Queen gets 25% of the net profit every year with the rest going to the treasury. 20/21 was a bad year the crown estate only generated £269.3M. My favourite is Windsor Castle, not only because it's stunning architecture but because I and a small group of us were allowed by the Queen to be presented with our horse related qualification in her private indoor school by her Head Groom. Afterwards, we all piled into a Landrover and were taken round the grounds where the public aren't allowed and were shown where the Corgi's go for a wee!! (specifically fenced off area with trees) and a cow shed lined inside with Delft porcelain tiles which had been given to the Queen by the Royal family of the Netherlands as a gift but the Queen didn't know what to do with them so put them in the cow shed! Priceless Delft tiles covered in cow poo lol. The Queen wasn't there but we met her own horses in the stables and had a rummage through her tack room which was no different to anyone else's to be fair with the familiar strong smell of saddle soap and Linseed oil.

The Crown estates are owned by the crown/monarch/head of state. The Crown can be considered as a one person corporation. There are managers that run the estate for the Queen as an independent part of the treasury department of the Government, though I believe there is consultation with the Queen on the direction of the portfolio. Prince Charles is said to be very hands on in the management of the Dutchy of Cornwall, which is the estate belonging to the holder of the Prince of Wales title. The Crown estates do buy and sell property all the time like any other portfolio, but there are some properties that have significant historical importance and are very unlikely to ever be considered for sale. At the moment 30% of the nett income of the Crown estates is given as a grant to the monarch or the figure of the previous years expenses, whichever is greater. The rest of the estate income is given to the government, think of it as a 70% tax. Not all the money in the budget is spent on expenses, some is used as cash for personal items. An accountant will asses the expenditure and assign it as either an official expense or not.
@californianreacts
@californianreacts 3 жыл бұрын
Well thought out for these Crown estates and how they run and operate, and bring in very good income for both upkeep of the properties and to the government. A self-sustained win-win for the government and it's people. These palaces/royal residences and the history behind them is a huge reason why I went to London a few years back. Absolutely love the history, and significance of these beautiful places.

Aren't the Crown estates owned by the State??
@martingibbs1179
@martingibbs1179 3 жыл бұрын
@@daphnethurlow5388 It depends on your definition of state. The crown estates are owned by the Crown and by extension owned by who owns the Crown, which is the Monarch, currently Elizabeth II. When I hear state I think more of parliament and the official crown estates website is very clear that Parliament (i.e. the public) definitely does not own the Crown estates. The Crown estates are different from the Dutchy of Lancaster, which is also owned by the monarch, in that old agreements mean that the Crown estates revenue all goes to Parliament and that Parliaments representatives manage the estates and exercise the rights of ownership even though the public body does not actually own the estates. Since, the Queen choose at the beginning of her Reign to honour those old agreements the Queen has very little say in how the estates are run/ invested. Though I suspect that if the monarch ever makes any suggestions that the managers will take those suggestions very seriously. In exchange for all revenue from the estates and management rights parliament agrees to pay for the monarchs expenses that parliament has deemed legitimate. Parliament used to debate what was a legitimate expense to be listed in the civil list. For many reasons under David Cameron the civil list was done away with in favour of the Sovereign grant which does not need to be debated in Parliament. Typically the Crown estates produce enough revenue to cover the Crowns official costs, but in bad years Parliament is obligated to make up the difference with tax payer money. Since, the revenues from the estates are not considered as belonging to the Crown the estates are never included in any calculations of the Monarchs personal wealth. I guess the big question is what would happen if the UK ever decided to remove the monarch as the official head of state. I guess it would depend on how big a bully parliament wants to be about it.

1. Crown Estates are what the monarch uses for official uses, technically run for the nation by the government and is run to make profit for the treasury. An act of Parliament created the Crown Estates. The public can see via freedom of information the costs to the taxpayers. So its part Royal owned and part public controlled. Crown Estates can't be given away in wills or gifted to anyone outside the UK 2. Privately owned means its exclusively owned by the Royals. These can be given away in wills to others inside the UK or outside the UK. The expenses are paid for directly by the Queen. She owns it she pays for it. 3. The Queen's race horses are also privately owned.

One place where the Queen and Prince Philip lived that is forgotten about is on the Mediterranean island of Malta. Before they had children and Prince Philip was still in the Navy, this was where he was posted for a while so they had a modest rented house on the island and she was just another service wife .They were able to go to dances ,coffee mornings or whatever other amusements were organised and she loved it . Later from time to time she was able to see the house ,for sentimental reasons ,if there was a state visit in that part of the world but more recently the house was shown as derelict ,not having been lived in for many years

The Crown Estate was royal property held in Corporation Sole by the Sovereign, the revenues of which were surrendered many years ago in exchange for the Monarch not having to support the day to day expenses of the Government. It is basically a Government Department....but not quite. 2018 revenue, which goes to the Treasury, £1.9bn In exchange the working royals get an allowance called the Civil List. The Crown Estate encompasses not just palaces but significant agricultural and commercial assets. The Queen owns Sandringham and Balmoral estates outright as an individual, as you and I own our homes.....but a "bit upmarket". She also retains the ownership and income from the Duchy of Lancaster, a private estate and royal prerogative, for her personal expenses - revenue £19.2m in 2017. The income from the Duchy of Cornwall, which HMQ also retains, provides income for the heir to the throne. Fun fact, the Queen is Duke not Duchess of Lancaster and Lancashire regiments give the loyal toast as: "The Queen, Duke of Lancaster".
@martingibbs1179
@martingibbs1179 3 жыл бұрын
I thought the civil list was the old name, but Parliament got fed up of having to debate the civil list every few years, so created a new act changing the mechanism and calling it the Sovereign Grant. A fixed 30% of revenue or the value of the previous years official expenses, which ever is greater.

Osborne House and estate on the Isle of Wight was brought by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the mid 1800’s as a sort of Summer holiday home. She is said to have adored the place, particularly as Prince Albert designed a lot of the rooms and they decorated the rooms in their own style. Queen Victoria actually passed away here. King Edward, her successor, didn’t like the house so handed it over to the nation, so it is now run by English Heritage, but I believe the Queen is still consulted over any key decisions, so I’m not sure if in theory the Crown still owns it. I have visited Windsor Castle, Buckingham & Holyrood Palace and the above mentioned Osborne house.

The Crown Estate is a company that owns and runs a £15bn($21bn approx) portfolio of properties and lands on behalf of the Monarch of the United Kingdom as an institution, not Queen Elizabeth II personally. You're not wrong but don't forget as the Monarch she owns the Crown estate company by right of the crown. It is my understanding that the Queen is consulted and does have some say in how the estate operates. The Queen can tell them not to invest in companies or activities that would reflect poorly on her for example.

I would chose Windsor every time to live in, it is magnificent and has so much land, you can be away from everyone and everything just riding your horse around the estate. Crown owned property is really property of the state but is given as grace and favour lodgings to the monarch of the day, privately owned means it actually belongs to the queen and she can do what she likes with it. The Queen has a vast personal fortune as well as owning an amazing art collection, she also breeds race horses and ponies, she breeds cattle and dogs and also has a mass of crop farms. She also makes money from racing her horses, not a lot lately though lol. She also personally owns Balmoral castle as well as Sandringham house in Norfolk. On the Windsor castle estate there are various mansions and farms where the rest of the Royal family live, they are all privately owned but the castle itself belongs to the crown / state. Hope this helps.

The Queen is not even in the top 10 richest women in the country, but what she 'owns' on behalf of the heritage and people would put her net worth far higher if it were not 'in keeping' for the country. Much is priceless, including a few billionaire palaces and the world's largest private art collection, consisting of 2 million items (by comparison the Louvre has about 40,000 paintings), worth an estimated $13 billion even without royal value. Then there's the Crown Estate that owns much of Central London, inc vast tracts of the world's most expensive land values. This is a norm for Royals round the world -the Imperial Palace in Beijing, with much of its artwork looted or abroad, is still worth $70 billion.

Imagine "The Crown" being the symbolic image of a Monarchy. Queen Elizabeth II, as queen, is the current holder of "The Crown" - she represents "The Crown" as monarch. The Queen and The Crown should be viewed as separate entities. Anything owned by "The Crown", will be passed on to the next monarch and used by them, such as Windsor Castle etc. So if for some bizarre reason the next monarch will be someone outside of the Windsor family (hypothetical obviously, line of succession is pretty clear), then places such as Sandringham would no longer be a royal residence.

Her Majesty is both the woman and the Sovereign (Hence the Royal we). The Queen of herself owns the 4 palaces but needs her advisers/parliament's approval for things as it belongs to the kingdom as a whole. Not forgetting The Tower of London. More a museum & tourist haunt with the Crown Jewels on display but still a royal palace. HM the Queen no resides there but many previous Monarchs did & of course the imprisonments & executions of Henry VIII wives amongst many other notables of history make it a go to palace. Even Nazi spy’s met their demise within their walls so still relevant in more recent times. So no Monarch these days but over 1000 years of history make it unique in my book.

True! You are absolutely correct. I went to the Tower of London not knowing much about it. Came out knowing I could spend a whole day in there to really learn and take in the rich history of this historical area. Recently watched a series on the Tower of London and thought it was funny that one of the gift shops is located in what used to be the dungeon/torture chamber. Thank you for your comment and extra information, Colin!

I would imagine they're all part of the Crown estate but I really don't know. To be honest you would need someone who has spent some time delving into these matters. Sorry to correct this, but St James' Palace is where Prince Charles has his court (headquarters, or centre of operations) ... he doesn't live there. He lives in Clarence House, just off The Mall. Before him, it was the home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. When she died, Clarence House became the London residence of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

The Crown is the institution. The Queen is the person who currently inhabits the position. Elizabeth may, as a private individual own property. She only "owns" Crown property in the same sense that your President "owns" the White House. Also their are many heads of state of countries poorer than the UK with personal fortunes far in excess of 300 million dollars. I think we get really good value for money.

I suspect the President of the United States is in law two people; as President a 'corporation sole' to run the country, and a private individual to, say build a house for when he has stepped down. So other commenters are on the right track when they say the Queen has two personalities; as a corporation sole - the 'Crown' - and a private individual. (Incidentally, the 'Crown' employs all civil servants.) The bit about the bloodstain in the Palace of Holyroodhouse is based on a historical fact. The lonely Mary, Queen of Scots, a French-brought-up Catholic in a country turning Protestant, was thought by jealous nobles ( including her husband) to be too friendly with her Italian secretary, David Rizzio. So they charged into the Palace and murdered Rizzio in front of her; her husband joined in, in spite of the fact she was heavily pregnant with his child! (The husband, Lord Darnley, died mysteriously not long afterwards...) The room Rizzio died in is still authentically there, but any bloodstain is very dubious...

Palaces owned by the Crown are effectively property of the state. HM's offices are given a grant by the Government each year to run these, and of course they are not HM's personal property. Sandringham is owned by the Queen and the family funds its upkeep, as in the case of Balmoral, which was Victoria's favourite. You exclaimed at HM's $400 million wealth. Well, Trump claimed a fortune of $3 billion. In today's money, Washington's properties alone were worth $500 million. The Clinton Foundation is worth over $50 million. There are 476 billionaires in the US today, with 13 of them holding public office!

I’d choose Sandringham to live it. It has a different feel to Buckingham Palace. It feels like a proper home.I loved it when I visited. The Queen goes there for Christmas & New Year. Traditionally she stays until February in remembrance as her father who died on 7th February. For historical interest Windsor Castle is very historic. The grounds are vast and are mostly open to the public. It’s the only place I’ve seen a regular car park and another for Horse boxes. Many take their horses up there and ride around. The other palace to che check out for historical content is Hampton Court. Henry the VIII took it from Cardinal Wolsey when he fell from favour. There is a spectacular chapel and an original Tudor tennis court. William III & Queen Mary 1688-1702 built on the back of the Tudor part and it is so beautiful. I think Christopher Wren, famous for building St Paul’s Cathedral, London, helped with the design.The Queen owns Hampton Court but doesn’t live there. Victoria & Albert decided to open it to the public. The Pavilion in Brighton is an indulgent project by George IV. He spent a fortune on it. As a seaside residence it is opulent. It’s as if George said, I want 10 of those and 80 of those and cover it all in gold while you are at it. This is another place that was open to the public by Victoria. The principal reason as it had no grounds to speak of so offered no privacy for the monarch and her family. Best wishes and kind regards from the 🇬🇧

British palaces are rather modest compared to their European counterparts. The conspicuous display of wealth has never been a British trait. In consequence, Buckingham Palace, with its monstrous and pedantic facade, is considered rather down market. The externally oppressive theme is continued inside by the insistent use of gaudy over-decoration. Today, Buck House is used mostly to hide arrogant and duplicitous minor Royals - who, thankfully, have fallen well down the Line of Succession - or to impress visiting European politicians who revere anything splashed with gold. (I believe the Waterloo Room is a big hit with the French...) Windsor Castle has age on its side, but was, regrettably, reworked in the 1800s to look more like a, er, real castle... It now has the visual flavour of a biscuit-box. On the other hand, Her Majesty's Tower of London (I'm not sure if this is considered a palace) is the real thing. The White Tower was built following the Norman Conquest in 1066, and the outer buildings added as military expediency dictated. It was built to intimidate and cower the Anglo-Saxons and to defend London. A great place to imprison and behead the treasonous, it hasn't changed much, and now houses the Crown Jewels. The Yeoman Warders were still playing football with the remains of Oliver Cromwell's head in the 1960s. There's no artificial frippery here. Enter at your own risk... you may never leave!

As a Brit, I mostly support the royal. The Queen is a true royal and does so much for the good of the country. I am very proud to have her as my monarch. However, when she dies, the monarchy will go to pot if we have to have that total dickhead Charles as king. He will do untold damage to the country. It will take many, many years to recover from his reign.

A lot of Brits seem to believe the Monarch can do whatever she wants without reprisal, this is not the case at all. The monarch is bound by the rule of law and the constitution of the United Kingdom. There are at least 3 precedents in history I can think of where a monarch overreached their power and it didn’t end well for them. The first being King John, his baron’s rebellion against him is the reason we have the Magna Carta, which gave fundamental rights to all of England. Secondly, King Charles I got his head chopped off because he tried to rule without Parliament. And finally, King James II tried the same thing as his father Charles and was forced into exile by Parliament, his entire male line barred from the throne forever. The point being the monarch cannot do whatever they want especially the modern monarchy which, although undoubtedly an influential position, is little more than a figure head. Their position today is entirely reliant on good public opinion.
@RPedrosa25
@RPedrosa25 3 жыл бұрын
Ultimately you are incorrect, the Monarch is the law. She could in theory wield her enormous reserve powers dissolve parliament and reappoint one she wants, appoint any minister and prime minister she wants and failing that with any insurrection call in the armed forces, of course today the monarchy is a constitutional monarchy but as its not codified the monarch stands at the top of the legal tree.

@@californianreacts A recent poll had figures as 62% pro-monarchy, 21% pro-republic, 17% don't know. These figures have remained pretty stable in my lifetime - over 50 years. The pro-monarchy figure is slightly lower than usual at the moment (owing to the Harry/Meghan situation), but this has happened before. When Diana, Princess of Wales died, approval ratings dipped, but by the time of The Queen's Diamond Jubilee they were back up to over 80%. If the current 21% figure ever approaches 50% we would have a referendum.
