‘Jerusalem’ takes its words from a poem by William Blake and is often put forward as an alternative English national anthem. But how well do you know its lyrics and history?
‘Jerusalem’ is a beautiful hymn by choral trailblazer Sir Hubert Parry, and a favorite for England’s national anthem.
‘And did those feet in ancient time’ - also the hymn’s first line, and alternate title - is a poem written by William Blake around 1808. Taken from the preface to his great work Milton: A Poem in Two Books, the poem was inspired by the legend that Jesus might have travelled, with Joseph of Arimathea, to England - to Glastonbury, to be precise.
According to its most common interpretation, Blake’s poem suggests that a visit from Jesus will create heaven in England, in contrast to the ‘dark Satanic Mills’ of the Industrial Revolution.
The tune to ‘Jerusalem’, written much later in 1917, was composed by Parry, who also wrote the choral favorite ‘I Was Glad’.
- Who wrote the hymn ‘Jerusalem’?
When ‘Jerusalem’ was included as a patriotic poem in a 1916 collection for a country at war, it immediately caught the eye of Parry - who was more than happy, at the suggestion of the Poet Laureate, Robert Bridges, to set it to music, calling it simply ‘Jerusalem’.
Parry had died just four years earlier, so this re-orchestration was Elgar’s way of paying tribute to his fellow composer.
‘Jerusalem’ tells of the legend that Jesus might have travelled to Glastonbury
- Lyrics to Jerusalem:
"And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold:
Bring me my arrows of desire:
Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire.
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land."
- Is ‘Jerusalem’ England’s national anthem?
‘God Save the Queen’ is the national anthem for the UK, and it is often also used for England.
But ‘Jerusalem’ has become an unofficial second national anthem and is often used by England at sporting fixtures, such as the Commonwealth Games, where each of the home nations is represented separately.
It has become the official hymn of the English Cricket Board and is usually sung at both the Rugby League Challenge cup Final and the Super League final.

Different generation here. I work for the NHS, I'm exhausted, I'm underpaid, we've had a recession in 2010, then brexshit, then a pandemic and now the cost of living crisis, ON TOP of Tory meritocracy rule of 13 years which all in all has f*cked up my chances of ever owning a house. just have to say that the conductor here is a Czech musician called Jiří Bělohlávek. He was the BBC symphony's chief conductor at the time, and he passed away in 2017. He was a fantastic musician and really well-liked and respected. I was conducted by him when I sang in a London choir and he was such a gentleman, and not a 'showman' at all. So I'm guessing this was quite a tough gig for him!

I've been lucky enough to be at the Last Night in stall seats 3 times. My sister had an elderly lady friend who had been given "lifetime debenture" seats by her father as a 21st birthday gift earlier in the 20th century. That meant she automatically got free tickets for every single event at the RAH, except boxing or tennis (when the stalls actually get covered over!). By the 1980/90s at her advanced age, she was not interested in going anymore, so any tickets were freely available to anyone she knew: "first come, first served" - I cant quite imagine her going to a rock concert there! We went to the RAH loads of times, but the Last Night was always the best.....! Looking at those prices I now realise QUITE how lucky I was!!!!!!!

Thank you for the respect you showed to our national anthem by not talking over it. This arrangement of God Save the Queen was written in 1962 by the English composer Benjamin Britten and is understood to have been our late Queen's favorite arrangement (and, goodness knows, she had to listen to a few). From 2010, The National Anthem - as the arrangement is titled - was played at the end of the Last Night of the Proms every year for the rest of Her Majesty's reign. It is easy to see why anyone, regardless of nationality or language, can be caught up, as you observe, in the emotion and energy building within orchestration and choral voices. One just wants to be part of it! Mesmerizing!

My First Prom was when I was Eight at Queens Hall in 1936, I was taken by my Aunt. I went again in 1938. I was taken to my 3rd Prom on 26th August 1939 at Queens Hall . The following week the Season was cancelled due to Hitler's invasion of Poland and War being declared on Sunday 3rd. Queen's Hall was destroyed in 1941. My next was 5th September 1945 at the Albert Hall following discharge from the Army. I have had Lifelong love of Classical music ever since. I was lucky to study and have an early career in London attending every Season of the Proms and when unable, following on Radio and the Television. God Bless the BBC. I've kept all the Programmes, I shall ask my son to find them. I was extremely fortunate to conduct the BBC Symphony Orchestra at one of their rehearsals a few years ago and tell them directly what pleasure they had giving me and my wife over the years. The piece we rehearsed was Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance.

The poet, William Blake, wrote the words to Jerusalem. He visited Glastonbury and, after doing tons of research, he came to sincerely believe that Jesus did come to England with his uncle Joseph of Arimathea. I only found this out because - after listening to this very version - I wondered why he would write such a thing. After dipping into all sorts of theories, I came across a KZfaq video 'The Light in the West - Jesus' Lost Years. I was amazed by the information I discovered about England - the West Country really - and its history centuries before the Roman invasion (and leading up to the day the Romans came). I thought if you had an odd moment or two, as a bit of an Anglophile yourself, you might like to see it too???? Just a thought!

The proms was set up originally to give ordinary people access to live orchestral music and it is now a 2 month season each year of classical music. Each concert has a different theme, it might be a Gershwin evening, Film scores, the great symphonies and concertos etc. They even have a few children's proms. While trying to buy tickets for the last night of the proms (which is when the second half have all the patriotic songs) are very expensive, regular promenaders (people who attend the proms), can go into a draw for last night tickets if they attend a certain number of the concerts in the season, for a 'standard' price. The proms in the park concerts for the last night, generally have a slightly different first half before joining in the second half traditional repertoire with the Royal Albert Hall. Also, in the Royal Albert Hall, after the National Anthem is sung to end the proms season, the promenaders generally link hands in the traditional way and sing Auld Lang Syne as a way of saying goodbye until the next season starts the following year.

I've been honoured enough to have attended the proms at the RAH and the atmosphere there blows your mind it's pretty amazing fortunately I was given the tickets by someone I know who performed there The last night is very hard to get to. There is a condition to attend the last night and that condition is that you have to attend at least five of the ordinary proms before your considered for the last night. If you like national anthems then a must for you to actually take a good look at is the five national anthems of the UK in full a reaction video to all five would be great to listen to and watch. These anthems are as follows -: "God Save The King", United Kingdom National Anthem. Jerusalem. England's National Anthem. "Land of our Fathers". Wales National Anthem. "Flower of Scotland". Scotland's National Anthem "Danny boy". Northern. Ireland's national anthem

I was lucky enough to be in the crowd in Hyde Park on that very night in 2012 along with 40,000 orhers and I can tell you that the atmosphere was absolutely electric and I think, given this was just a couple of weeks after the Olympic Games people were even more patriotic than usual, it was like no other concert I've ever been to. I have to say that this is by far my favourite version of our National Anthem. It's just so atmospheric and emotional in its arrangement, it gives me chills every time I hear it. It will be all change this year of course, now that we have a new King, so it will be God Save The King and all the pronouns will change from she to he.

I went to the Albert Hall for the first time a few months ago with my granddaughter for a jazz concert. The intimate athmosphere of this hall is amazing. I,m taking three of my grandsons over for the last night to Hyde Park with my husband and we,ll be driving from Germany to get there. I can,t wait.😁

I always watch this with my Mum on the television, unfortunately we missed it last year because we had a family event that night and it hadn’t been on previously because of Covid. I’ve got to say when I was younger I didn’t appreciate how amazing this was and how lucky I’d be to grow up with this, I have to thank you and other reactors for making me realise I should appreciate it even more than I’d already come to appreciate it.

I visited England the first time at the age of 13 in 1982 and fell in love with the country and it's people and since then have visited many times including a 4 week trip from the very south to the far north. This country was my first love ever and it will always have that special place in my heart. I love the last night of the Proms and have watched it many times. That said I'm deeply saddened what happened the last few years and it has hurt me on a personal level I didn't expect. I hope there will be a better future. All the best to the coolest country in the world. Even if you guys are not keen on the "continent " there are many people out there that admire and love you guys. ❤

I went to Hyde park proms the year after my father died (2016). It was amazing, the live music, the pomp, the camaraderie. It’s a dry event (but naughtily smuggled a bottle of rose wine as squash and a miniature of whiskey to toast my father during Anthem from Chess which was his favourite song). So happy to have been and experienced it.

No, it is only on the Last Night that the Proms features what you refer to as patriotic songs. The other concerts are mainly of classical music. There were 84 concerts in the '22 season, 63 of them at The Royal Albert Hall, though three concerts by the Philadelphia Symphony were cancelled following the Queen's death. About a third of the concerts are by symphony orchestras and soloists. Another third are by chamber orchestras, smaller ensembles, or choirs. The final third feature concerts by soloists across many music genres: modern classics, even jazz, international music, etc. There is often a featured composer each year with some emphasis on his/her music.

I remember an excellent documentary on BBC TV in 1995 to mark the centenary of the Proms which covered the whole story of the range of classical music played over these weeks every year, with people like Pierre Boulez saying that he had always assumed that it would just be a week or two of popular classics in the European style until he saw that it stretched to almost two months of popular, challenging and brand new repertoire. Edward Heath related how he managed, despite Army commitments, to see the premiere of Vaughan Williams’ Fifth Symphony. Pleasant reminiscences indeed - until they reached the story of the famous Last Night, when Timothy West the actor and the late Gerald Kaufman, then an MP, appeared and agreed that they were repelled and even nauseated by the overflowing full-throated sound of the good old patriotic tunes from orchestra and soloists and particularly the audience. In this country we do not ‘do’ patriotism like some others, but when we do we exercise it at full unapologetic throttle.

Just one thing it's 'the last night of THE proms'. It's actually 'The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts' (pronounced Prom/on/ard). It a 8 week season of concerts mainly classical music which now take place mainly in the Royal Albert Hall and run in collaboration with the BBC, broadcast on BBC Radio 3 selected performances shown on TV. The concerts get there due to the relaxed atmosphere for the audience, who originally where allowed to eat drink and smoke. Cheeper Promenade tickets are available for standing in the stalls. I was lucky enough to go to the last night a few years ago sat in one of the many boxes. It was an amazing night The quality of the playing and the atmosphere doesn't fully come across on the TV

I've attended concerts at the RAH quite a few times (not Last Night though), usually from a box seat luckily. Fantastic venue for classical music - the acoustics are great. But not so good for amplified music for some reason. The Proms is a fantastic series of concerts, every year - bravo to RAH for continuing such an amazing tradition.

I was a member of the BBC Symphony Chorus for a long time and sang in many Proms and Last Night of the Proms, including the one you have just shown (I was second from the left in the front row of the sopranos during the National anthem). They never fail to be the most amazing and emotional concerts. For the Orchestra and the Chorus they are also our end of term party so there is a real sense of the season coming to an end. In any one year the Chorus will sing in between 6 and 8 concerts (often new commissions or lesser known pieces). The orchestra play in between 10 and 15 concerts in the season. That is a huge commitment. Prices for tickets really do not have to be that expensive, you can ‘prom’ for £8 and if you buy via official sources the most expensive ticket is around £110 for a single seat in a 12 seat box. Seated Tickets for the LNOP are on a ballot basis - much like the finals at Wimbledon. And to be in the ballot you needed to have attended a certain number of concerts during the season. I am no longer part of the choir but I miss it all the time, experiences like this are why we live.

Setting by Benjamin Britten. The Queen's favorite setting of the anthem. He also wrote an oratorio to celebrate her accession to the throne. Gloriana. And he is one of my favorite composers. He also wrote his War Requiem at the Sam time for the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral which was destroyed in WW2 and the Queen opened the new Cathedral. This setting of the anthem is special. I can't even begin to imagine singing God Save The King. She was the Queen my entire life.

Thank you thank you thank you for sharing this with us as a proud British patriot it sometimes makes me very sad that pride in one's country as it is taught in America is frowned upon in this country they no longer teach the national anthem or any of the songs sung at the Albert hall these days. I remember singing these songs and at the end of an entertaining evening we always sang the anthem or opened an event with it but sad to say it doesn't happen anymore you would be hard pressed to find many people especially the young who could sing the anthem these days 😢😢
