➡️ CALIMOTO UPDATE: Downloadable maps for offline use now available (premium package). No phone signal required - phones have in-built GPS.
= = = = = = = = = =
Calimoto is an all-in-one motorcycle App that provide bikers with a platform to discover remote, motorcycle-friendly roads as well as giving a cost-efficient navigation tool. I put it through its paces.
As motorcyclists, we love an open road with lots of twists, hills, dips and turns. With Calimoto’s unique winding roads algorithm, it can plan routes with the curviest and scenic roads making each ride a thrilling experience. You can be off on a random route in just a few clicks. No more ‘where shall I ride today?’
Random Round Trips: This inspirational route finder is excellent if you just want to jump out of bed for an early Sunday morning ride out; program the App and ride.
The process is simple. Head into the App, select ‘Planner’ and ‘Round Trip’ at the top of the screen. Then pick a direction, how many miles you would like to cover, hit ‘random’ and it will do the rest. Moments later, you will be ‘route-ready’. If you don’t fancy a particular section, simply move the waypoint. It couldn’t be easier. The only downside you may need to head back into ‘Planner’ so you can adjust the route type between each waypoint. You have a choice of:
fastest route; the fastest route avoiding highways
; twisty route (default)
; and super twisty route (Premium version only). Ride, relax and enjoy.
I usually aim for 35-40 miles for each hour I want to spend in the saddle.
Can it be a simple Satellite Navigation tool? Absolutely. Firstly, head into ‘Planner’ then, next to ‘Round Trip’ is ‘Destination’ mode. I think many users miss this mode. It could do with being more prominent to be fair.
Enter your destination or type in the postcode, which it starts to predict. Enter house number. Add in via points, select the variety of route or just hit ‘fastest route’ if you just want to get there. Start navigation and you’re away. Relevant POIs such as petrol stations, food places, and accommodation can be integrated into the trip.
Planning a tour? I’ve heard many a person on Facebook saying Calimoto isn’t a route planning tool. It certainly is and more. You can still have fun planning the routes way in advance of your next several-day tour, and no, you don’t need to do it on the phone. As it is a cloud-based system, simply log into your account using any web browser. Here you can plan routes similarly as you would with the App. Simply create your ideal itinerary by adding routes and applying different route option between each waypoint then save. Made a mistake, simply undo. You can tweak them later and all the while it will automatically sync with your phone. No more faffing or frustration of moving maps from your route planning tools to your SatNav device. Hoorah! On this note alone, I am very tempted to head to Spain without the need to plan any routes then just let Calimoto do its stuff once I leave the ferry.

I absolutely agree with you. It is for me too. As mentioned to BanditmanUK, we now have more convenient tools in our planning toolbox as, using the online application, it could easily highlight other routes we could miss. On the flip side, if I end up having a couple of last-minute spare days, I feel confident I can now quickly pick my direction, length of ride, adjust the twisty routes and go. That's fun too.

Been using it for a couple of months. Phone in my pocket and Bluetooth to my helmet and it’s been working week. Just got my Quad Lock, so next ride will also include being able to see the route on the screen. Been a few glitches where it’s telling you to take a slight right/left, but it’s just been staying on the main road. Had some fun rides around Surrey, Sussex and Kent thanks to the Calimoto twisty rides. Not sure what I get as extras if I pay, the free app has been really good.

Hello Tahir. To see the screen will help as often we found, especially at double-junctions, it would want to take you off the main road then rejoin. You'll need to have your wits about you. The extras offer downloadable maps so you can use without data connection - handy if there is no signal if out in the sticks. You also get the ultra twisty option which can take you down some real tight countryside roads. At the moment, it's worth the money.

Calimoto is brilliant. Best M/Cycle route planner out there ...and I've done some searching! I use it here in Queensland, Australia. It does drain the battery though so the phone needs to be powered. I use a cable via the Hella plug on the headstock. Failing that, a battery pack in the pocket using a longer usb cord to the phone works well. I like how you can also drop pins on your trip on the desktop site and choose motorways/twisties for each individual segment. Good tip for you... you can also open Google Maps while using Calimoto and then minimise G Maps so it sits in the corner of the screen with Calimoto at full screen. With this 'mode', you can have G Maps set to the fastest route and if you feel Calimoto is getting a little intense with its planning, revert to G Maps in a glance. I also use Quad Lock and have done for some time now without the dreaded vibration phone killer problem.

It's taken a while to catch up and thanks for your comment. Isn't it just. Typically your battery usage could be used up between 3.5 to 5 hours depending on the type of phone. Yes, the desktop is particularly useful when having a beer planning the night before. You can check in with the weather too. Cheers for the tip. See, you always learn something new.

I like Calimoto but you can't always get a data signal in places like The Picos. If I couldn't be bothered researching and planning routes then it would be a big time saver. You are right about it being good for riding unknown roads. Thanks for posting the video.

With pleasure, The Woodster! Not anymore: no phone signal, no worry. With the premium version, you can now download the maps so you can continue to use offline. Most phones have built-in GPS. Using Calimotos online application, you can sign-in and plan routes during the dark winter nights. It'll store then sync to your phone when you're ready.

Interesting review, featuring some of my regular roads. Out of interest what phone are you using? I think you need to compare with a more up to date Garmin, much less faffing, or at least the faff is done once on the bike!

@o75uk 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Eammim. My phone's an Apple iPhone 11 Pro. As for faffing, I know what you mean. That said, it's not necessarily with the Garmin itself, or any other satnav for that matter, rather than it's the time you can spend planning routes and uploading them into the satnav before a touring trip. I now feel inspired just to let Calimoto's algorithmic planning take me for a ride knowing I am going to hit some great roads regardless if it's a several-day trip on an hour's after-work ride.

I love the Calimoto App but also started using the App KURVIGER, also offers online access over kurviger.de (can be set to English) and shows viewpoints as well. Also does Roundtrips with distance and compass, and route planning with various export. Would like to see you doing a comparison on those 2 as they are both focused on bike routes.

If out for up to a four-hour blast, then my phone battery would have been sufficient but seeing I'm likely to be on the roads all day, I've treated myself to a fast-charging 10W Quad-Lock Wireless charging head (it's a little pricey): www.quadlockcase.co.uk/collections/accessories/products/motorcycle-wireless-charging-head If your phone isn't compatible with wireless charging, with a you can buy an IP66-rated motorcycle USB charger: www.quadlockcase.co.uk/products/usb-charger-motorcycle Hope this helps!

I think if I've paid my money to go on holiday I don't want to leave it to an app to decide the route. Isn't part of the fun of touring planning the route? We use the Garmin 660 but turn off the bluetooth and just follow the screen. Think I would worry about phone battery, data and what happens if your in an area with no mobile signal.? Saying all that, if I didn't already have the 660 we would probably give it a go.
@o75uk
@o75uk 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Banditmanuk, hope you're well. I completely agree that planning is part of the fun and will likely continue to do so with big trips but it does give me more confidence just to turn up in Spain, pick a route and go. I'm more likely to be spontaneous for the one- and two-nighters without the need to take a peek at GoogleMaps and that's half the fun too - let it find the route for you and go! That said, I would now add this tool to my planning armoury as it could highlight other routes I may not be aware of. I will now also look to build and store routes using Calimoto online then remotely sync with a few other Calimoto users (my mates). Once I've ridden the routes, it will store my stats as well. Might even compare with other at the end of the ride to see who had the greatest lean angle of the day! Navigation has come a long way since our trusted Garmin 660s were launched in April 2009. Even if you want to simply ride the roads without guidance, turn on and ride. No phone signal, no worry; download the maps for offline use before you go. Phones have GPS integrated. Battery - not an issue. I have an iPhone 11 Pro which I get about four hours constant use before I need to think about recharging. I bought Quad-Lock's wireless charger so can use all day. Calimoto is free but its key features, such as the real twisty routes and downloadable maps, are part of its paid premium package. Only downside, you can't use it with gloves on!

How are you getting on with the Quad Lock? I really want to get one but I’m a little wary since reading some reviews claiming that it can cause camera stabilisation issues on later IPhones. What phone are you using with it?
@o75uk
@o75uk 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rooty #23. So far, so good. Fingers' crossed. Like you, I have read more comments than I would like regarding the Quad Lock and later smartphones. Not to say it won't affect my iPhone 11 Pro when next out. That said, I just did 240-mile round trip without issues but I have bought the wireless charger too which was a little pricey. I think I will add some foam-based tape around the handlebars just to take the vibration edge off things. Personally, I think it could be certain engine types that resonate at particular frequencies that cause camera stabilisation to fail. No one mentions what bikes they ride. If wary, look at SP Connect which comes with an anti-vibration module. sp-connect.co.uk/products/anti-vibration-module?variant=31685155061858

Once you have selected the route/destination, and before you select ‘navigate’, go to ‘Planner’ menu on the bottom of the screen. There you should find your way points. There is a little down arrow to the right of each waypoint. Hit the arrow should drop the menu showing types of roads. Here you can select the type of road you wish to ride between each way point. As default, it should be set to ‘Twisty’. Hope this helps.

How does the Calimoto twisty function compare to the same function on Garmin and TomTom? Is Calimoto as good as a dedicated Motorcycle SatNav?
@o75uk
@o75uk 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Buzzman3200, thanks for dropping us a little line. I can't comment as my old Garmin 660 didn't possess such a feature rather than relying on pre-selecting routes prior to transferring to my device. I've never used TomTom so can't help either, I'm afraid. To answer your second question, Calimoto is now my dedicated SatNav as it offers so many features. Planning direct routes in the app is straight forward or, as I tend to do, is plan routes using Calimoto via my webrowser on my laptop the night before which then auto syncs with the app. I can adjust the route too if I fancy it. Easy, Then the following morning, jump on the bike, load the route and go.

@@o75uk Hi again, lovely to hear back from you again. Always liked watching your biking videos. Was going to ask what part of the U.K are you located? I'm from Kent...Isle of Sheppey to be exact, roads where I live aren't that great...lots of potholes and crap repairs( fill it in and 2 days later it's back to how it was) I spent long enough on the road cycling bike to learn where most of the holes are to avoid them! I'm using the Sena 20s Evo which works great with Calimoto. The only issue I have is this....I have lots of GPX track files from my cycling journeys which I'd planned on using as they are all on road and ideal for the Honda PCX I have got to ride along...tried and tested routes let's say. What's annoying for me is that when importing them the route is largely the same bar a few weird turns in places which the original GPX file doesn't have. I understand it's part of Calimoto's "twisty" feature but honestly some of these changes are a bit diabolical. An example given is a straight road, and then it diverts me down a normal road with houses to wind up 300m further up that straight road...annoying at best. I know you can change and edit waypoints, it's a shame there isn't a feature whereby imported GPX files can be left as they are and the "twisty" feature reserved for round trip routing whereby it will calculate routes for you like your video's show so brilliantly. Other than that I'm happy with the app and the Quadlock mount I'm using. If you're ever over my way give me a shout 😉👍🏻🏍️🏍️ Safe riding.

Hi, Is anyone else having "return to start" issues? I bought the full version and was initiall pleased, but I have used the Calimoto app 8 times, and on 5 of the trips...for no obvious reason, it recalculated the route and tried to send me back to my start point...this is unbelievably infuriating. @o75uk
@o75uk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, thank you for your comment. Ideally it would be better to install a specific Bluetooth headset which can be installed in most helmets. You can listen to music as well. As it comes with a microphone, it will also allow you to chat with riding buddies too. I suppose you could try earbuds but the fiddling to get them conformtable once the helmet is on could become a bit of a faff. I'm not sure on this option. I wouldn't go with a wired option as it could damage your headphones or phone if you forget to detatch it from your bike's mount. There are two manufacturers most riders stick with; Sena or Cardo. As a personal preference, I went for the latter for its durability, reliability and excellent comms between riders which easily lasts an all-day ride. Since installing, I've never looked back.

I really wish sat navs would include that as an option, I've been caught too many times by the sat nav taking me down single track, gravel / moss down the centre type roads. Thanks for taking the time to comment. While there are plentiful GPS Apps and free downloadable maps available, I vaguely recall Wikiloc is a resource for outdoor trails. Calimoto uses its own algorithms to generate a motorcycle-specific route encompassing twisty country-side roads close to your location which I haven't seen with other apps. Now that maps can be downloaded (a part of its premium package) does mean it can be used without a phone signal.
