Actors Armie Hammer, Timothée Chalamet and Esther Garrel join director Luca Guadagnino at the London press conference in full for their movie Call Me By Your Name.
The movie is based on the book by André Aciman.
Plot: It's the summer of 1983, and precocious 17-year-old Elio Perlman is spending the days with his family at their 17th-century villa in Lombardy, Italy. He soon meets Oliver, a handsome doctoral student who's working as an intern for Elio's father. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of their surroundings, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever.

Marzia is low-key one of the best secondary characters ever written. she's such a smart and beautiful person. I hope she's in the sequel. (and Esther Garrel is gorgeous!)

Of course we all love Elio and Oliver, but Marzia is a really important character too and Esther Garrel played her beautifully. I'm glad Esther was at the press conference, and that the host asked her questions and involved her. Esther and Victoire (Chiara) were both at the Berlinale launch, but the host there ignored them so they didn't speak the whole time which was quite rude!

I looove Luca Guadagnino. I totally get why the people he works with never leave him again. What Esther said about him and his reaction were so cute. Plus how he handled the question about the James Ivory interview, with his irreverent humour and at the same time taking all responsibility and protecting his cast and the question about James Woods saying such nice things(undeserved by that man who had only nasty things to say instead).

3:36 Recreating the story of the film. Timothee blushes as Armie matter-of-factly pours water in Timothee's glass before pouring water in his own glass. In the meantime, Esther puts ice in a glass of water and offers to Timothee as he politely says No. Esther looks at the speaker and drinks it herself. "Restiamo amici. Per la vita" and then "parce c'était lui. parce c'était moi"

Elijah Ballack I don't think they planned on this or trying to ignore her. I think Timothee is adored by everyone as he is the youngest. He probably asked for some water when both Armie and Esther got him some. It's funny as it somehow tells the story of the film.

Ok guys, I found the full story in the wider shot here - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9d2bJphmKvYZJc.html at 4:20 - Armie asks Esther for water, Timmy translates, Esther gives Armie a bottle of water, as Armie opens the bottle we hear the pop of the sparkling water, Timmy says something, Armie shrugs and then pours water in Timmy's glass, Esther starts putting ice cubes in the empty glass, Armie asks for Esther's glass to Timmy, Esther puts the glass with ice cubes in front of Timmy and takes the one that Armie just poured water into, Timmy smiles (donno why), Armie finally pours water in his own glass, Esther asks Timmy if Armie wanted ice in his water, Timmy says something along the line "I don't think so", Esther drinks from the glass she had in her hand and tries to listen to what Luca was saying, Armie passes the half-empty bottle to Timmy who puts it under the table, Armie finally drinks his water LOL

Well, what Armie Hammer said about challenging the perspective is so so important. That is exactly what this film has done to me! It changed me in a way. And it was so gentle, yet powerful experience. That is the role of a work of art, I guess: to shake us a little bit, make us think, sometimes doubt and finally come to our own unique conclusions (exactly what Socrates and then Plato did not only to Athenian boys of their times but to all of the western culture - used the sting to ironically encourage us to ask questions, to look for the real answers). Watching the film I didn't feel forced to agree with everything what was presented. I was more challenged to find my own interpretation. To ask questions I had never asked before, to be more open... BTW I see this film not so much as a gay movie but as a picture of a relationship derrived from Plato's Dialogues. It is about a totally different vision of society and culture, and education and growing up. The references to ancient philosophy and the lifestyle of intellectual Greek elites of classical period are very strong. I guess we should read this film rather as a journey through fascinating more than 2000 years of history, art, music, literature and philosophy back to Socrates. So, it is somehow metaphoric. Forces us to think. And forces us to understand more. Once again I felt some of my biases fell down. I think this is the most important, the most beautiful work of art I've encountered in my life so far. On so many levels.

Alex Andreas what a good friend. Hope we see het in the sequel. Also watching the film I felt that his mom knew as well, because the film had her a little more involved than the book. I have a theory that when Oliver and Elio go to Rome, and his mom invites Chiara and Marcia over for dinner that that's when they all talk about it.
@alexandreas9759
@alexandreas9759 6 жыл бұрын
Hufflepuffed mom has stronger and better feeling and intuition toward their children than dad, I assume. Eventhou on the last monologue scene, Elio asked his dad, does mom know? His dad replied, I don't think she does. But don't forget in the film when Elio and his mom were both sitting in the garden, his mom also said to Elio that I think Oliver likes you. Anyway, I expect watching the sequel too so bad and unfortunately I don't yet read the book 😢
@meximoan
@meximoan 6 жыл бұрын
Alex Andreas yeah the way should would stare at them sometimes just gave me a feeling that she knew. She's even the one that recommended Elio go to Rome with Oliver. Although Elio dad is known to be the most aware of what's going on so I'm inclined to take his to heart. Omg you gotta read the book. There's some different stuff in the there and you really get to get into Elios head.

I mean there was an internal antagonist being olivers internalised homophobia and an external antagonist being time... both things are not an obvious antagonist but a story wouldnt really work if there were no obstacles

I disagree with the first questioner. There is an antagonist in this film. I’d say there could be two. The first is time which is fully realized in the peach scene when Elio breaks down. Then the second I think is summarized so well by a piece of direction Armie says he got from Luca. Which was, imagine the possibility of impossibilities. Essentially that these characters know that their future together is not possible. Or that they can’t imagine it’s possibility which makes this fleeting summer all they can have.

I’d even say the internal struggle of a 17 year old to try to understand who they are is even a bit of an antagonist. Just not in the same way most gay coming of age stories deal with.
