The 1:39 part is so sickeningly chilling. Like you've just witnessed something utterly horrific, and you know you are next in line, and there is no turning back. This whole level made me so thankful that I've never had to experience anything like this in real life. Probably the highest point of the entire _Call of Duty_ franchise.
@JakvsMetalheads999 Жыл бұрын
I always did get a terrible feeling from that scene, as if a mask had been lifted. Up till that point, the commissar was at least feigning care for these men, giving a patriotic speech to try to reassure and rally the men to do their duty. It was uneasy but it almost felt alright. Then those men panic from the Stuka attack, and are gunned down by the officers in cold blood as they jump overboard. After that moment - no more speeches, no more patriotism, no more false veil of any sense of hope or heroism in what’s about to happen. Just cold, shell shocked silence as the terrified soldiers stare up at the officers that just did that, while the officers and commissar stare back brandishing their weapons, as if to ask “does anyone else want to try that?”. The relationship turns turns in a split second from that of soldiers and their officers, to condemned prisoners and their guards. The music underscores this horrifyingly.

Hearing this really stuck with me for the longest time, you can really imagine the foreboding horror it was for the average conscript on their way to Stalingrad with little training and the bare minimum equipment. Their options being either: advance to be shot by Nazi invaders or fall back and be executed by their Commissars following Stalin's Order No. 227, I really like how this campaign was about just trying to survive the war with your fellow soldiers.
@emmanuelluna58802 жыл бұрын
It's modeled on enemy at the gates which Russian historians say is Hollywood bullcrap. Stalin's order 227 did not go down that way during the war but anyhoo, if I were Russian, I'd feel that Activision and Paramount pictures were giving the Red Army superhero mythical status :-)

hell no, that's just Goebbels-level propaganda, based on "Enemy at the Gates" which is such an inaccurate turd of a movie that it's pretty much insulting. btw, funny how no one is talking about how the Americans, the British, Germans and the French had to do exactly that in ww1, shooting retreating men, just to keep them in their hellish trenches.
@dauzlee28278 ай бұрын
There is an equipment shortage but not that severe as depicted. The only ones who faced weapon shortage were hastily assembled militia that were sent to battle often without weapons, while Soviet units in Enemy at the Gates and COD 1 were Soviet regular forces not the militia. Commissar did not kill retreating soldiers en masse. Retreating soldiers were instead either resend to the battle or sent to the penal battalion

Remember great comrade Stalin's order! Not one step backwards! You will be well equipped for the battles that lie ahead. You will have food, water, weapons, and plenty of ammunition! What do you suppose the Germans have? Nothing! Their supply lines are stretched too thin! Their dash to the Volga has left them without the means to give us a proper fight. This piece of music right here is absolutely genius. Giacchino, unlike the CoD devs that had a slightly more positive portrayal, really managed to capture the fear and horror a soviet soldier must have felt, finding himself trapped involuntarily in the middle of a conflict between two awesomely powerful evils. There are still some moments in this piece where humanity - brotherhood, bravery - shine through, but are inevitably caught in a meat grinder of inhumane brainwashing ideologies. Truly music that summarizes what it's supposed to portray.

I knew it! I knew it! The Stalingrad/red square theme is the same tune as the hymn "Thy Strong Word" I remember playing this when it first came out... the series has fallen quite far since then I am afraid. These companies use to make art, not shite-crafted money grabs o' bugs 'n' paywalls galore. I also didn't know Giachinio wrote this. He also did Medal of Honor right before this, Call of Duty's original slogan and main selling point was "No one fights alone" as this game was among the first with practical NPCs. The Russian Campaign did such an artful job of depicting the bleakness and tin foil heroism of Soviet Russia... it contrasted so well with the other two campaigns... the 101st, then the SAS, growing closer in comradery with the NPC's and the story. You feel like part of a team. A unit. It seems to matter... then you find yourself on a boat crossing the volga... more NPC's rendered and processed on screen than I think any game before I think... but the loneliness... the sheer aloneness... you never know anyone really. Sgt. Bordin, who shoots the commissary enabling your survial... you don't even know why happens to him. A dead sniper and a Mosin 91/30 with a PU scope on it is the only resolution to his story you get. Poetic.

they very much did fight like this during parts of the war, like Stalingrad. They couldn't loose Stalingrad. it had Stalin's name in it. later in the war they started fighting like you say they do. that doesn't mean they never stopped the mass assault bullshit, and it doesn't mean that they never again funneled thousands into machine gun fire like that, but not one step back really meant not one step back.
