It is a very simple fact: people, particularly people who are not musicians, confuse the concepts of TIMBRE and TECHNIQUE. If the TIMBRE is pleasant to their ears, if they LIKE it, if they like the high notes, or the middle voice, or the piano sung tones, they call that GOOD TECHNIQUE, and, if they don't, they call that BAD TECHNIQUE. It is as much as to say that, for instance, some beautiful actress JUST BECAUSE SHE IS BEAUTIFUL has a better technique than an other, less beautiful. It is just ignorance. Callas had a complete and fully finished BEL CANTO technique, which allowed her to sing LIKE SHE SUNG, to serve the score, to be true to the personaggio, to make music, and to revolution the art of Opera. She never changed the score to please her voice, a practice that EVERYBODY uses, she forced her interpretation to be the most accurate in terms of the written tone as she could possible achieve. Her voice, her TIMBRE was and is not everybody's taste, and that is also irrelevant. When she sung to much and to often, and changed the STYLE OF WRITTEN REPERTORY to often, her voice was fatigues, and the INTRINSIC, NATURAL "FLOWS" OF HER VOICE were more noticeable, and THAT IS ALL, and that has nothing to do with her technique. As far as we know, form 1947 until 1959 her TECHNIQUE didn't suffer, her VOICE might have, but not her technique. In the '60, the psychological factors of her life as a woman affected very much her singing, and therefor, strictly vocally speaking, the VOICE reflected all that. But listen to her singing "Tosca" in public at Covent Garden in 1964, and you will see that, although the voice is under pressure, the TECHNIQUE IS THERE, as it always was. She was unique, she was the most true to the music of all singers, she was a genius. If some people don't like her metallic voice, and the uneven colors, that DOESN'T CHANGE IN THE SLIGHTEST WHO SHE WAS, AND WHAT SHE ACHIEVED.

The diminuendo on the E-flat is something I have never heard from any other singer, Sutherland included, but what I keep listening to again and again and again is the beautiful two octave descending scale that follows the note. It really is like pearls falling off of a string. It's absolutely breathtaking.

Shahrdad How true ! and why do we forever compare Callas and Dame Joan ?they were both Queens but in very different worlds .
@Shahrdad9 жыл бұрын
Jean Fourneau They were indeed different. Sutherland's voice was beautiful and she was so consistent. Callas's was unusual, but even though people speak of her lacking technique, she could do technical feats that were far beyond the reach of the wonderful Dame Joan, or of anyone for that matter. And her musicality and dramatic abilities were in a league of their own. And Sutherland too could be dramatically incisive and moving. I think Ethan Mordden said it best when he wrote (I'm paraphrasing): "Whereas Callas was the great singer often dismissed as a great actress, Sutherland was the great singer often dismissed as a . . . great singer."

As a twenty-year-old, I used to think that opera is all about wriggly, vibrato-laden voices topped with melodrama until I heard an excerpt of 'Sempre Libera' by Anna Netrebko. I thought it was pretty skilful singging -- boy, I was wrong! From there, I searched for the amazing E-flat at the end and landed on a video here of La Callas's 'Sempre Libera'. The recording was live and sketchy, but there was something about it that I could not put my finger on; it was like love at first sight. Thereafter, I have discovered the distinctiveness of each singer, be it Dame Sutherland, Birgit Nilsson, Leyla Gencer, Leontyne Price, or Tebaldi. However, it has always been with La Callas that I must come back to. The dark velvety middle registers which could grow sonorous in forte passages. The steely edge of the low registers and the overpowering of the high registers.... These are what I love about her instrument, let alone the technical and interpretive capabilities. Her singing is not 'pretty'. It is exquisite.

I guess it is the legendary Köln Sonambula, in 57. Beside transforming a bravura air in true Art, with such an inhumanly brilliant singing and undescribable elegance, that can only be compared with the Aurora Borealis, it must be noticed that she sings this impossible air - with all its trills, fioriture, picchietati, descending chromatic scales (a Callas specialty) and very high notes - with such an easiness and class as if she was singing something infinitely more easy, just like "O mio babbino caro"! Divine and Eternal Maria Callas!

Brava Callas!

This fabulous performance took place in Cologne on July 3, 1957 under the auspices of La Scala, who were making a visit to Germany. Naturally, they had to bring their reigning Queen Callas. The Edinburgh Festival performances took place in the middle of August of the same year ------ about six weeks after these, between which times she recorded for EMI Puccini's Turandot and Manon Lescaut. To juxtapose such diverse repertoire was a feat of which only Callas was capable. No one since!

'Maria Callas had a bad technique..." sure but can you tell me what other soprano has hit this note and did a diminuendo on it, within the same breath and do a 2 octave chromatic scale drop, EVENLY!? Yeah, I don't think so. NO ONE can claim credit to this incredible feat except La Divina, Maria Callas. And that's one of the few things she'll took to her grave. What does Malibran, Pasta and Maria Callas all have in common? They were all hated for their voices and yet did some of the most astonishing and complicated things with them. Singing songs that would make most women and men look awkward for they lack the technique. And even here in 1957, where she stated that she was losing her glorious E flat 6, she maintained an air about her that NO ONE since can take and claim as theirs. Please don't bring up those idiotic lies about it was her weight that cost her to lose her glorious voice or even that pathetic excuse that her technique was flawed, because it wasn't any of that. This woman sung Kundry, Turandot, Abigaiile, Norma, Tosca, Gioconda, Leonore from Fidelio, Leonora from Trovatore and Leonora from Destino, Imogene, Elvira, Armida, Armina, Carmen, Anna Bolena, Lucia, Iphigiene (which is also a mezzo role!), Santuzza, Cio-Cio San (Madame Butterfly), Gilda, Mimi, Rosina, Lady Macbeth AND fiorilla! Name me any other soprano with THAT extensive repertoire, and I'll shut up. But, I don't think anyone can because there isn't anyone (other than Callas as we don't have evidence to prove Pasta or Malibran recorded them but we can tell they did because of newsletters).

@folgoredasangimignano24228 жыл бұрын
+Federico Mastrangelo direi l'esatto contario! la voce della Callas è molto scura come quella di un mezzosoprano o di un soprano drammatico, la voce della Sutherland è chiara e luminosa di soprano, lirico che negli acuti diventa un leggero.
@foratti8 жыл бұрын

@Lormont52 may seem an easy thing, but it is hardest to do, and even more on a very high note. These passages they look easy, spontaneous, because the "sound" always maintain the same characteristics of timbre and vibration, as if it were produced by an instrument (violin): physically demands an extraordinary capacity to control the breath through the muscles of breathing and relaxation of the throat (on a note very very difficult for a human being: Callas sang and no longer flat after 1958)

@Lormont52 I have just seen your question and will try to answer it. E in this case E6 is a note which is 2 octaves plus two notes above middle C on the piano. Usually the highest note sopranos can sing. Rarely someone can do an F but incredibly rare. E flat is a semltone lower. The note (the black key on a piano) between D and E. Diminuendo means gradually diminishing the volume. So E flat diminuendo means singing a high E flat and at the same time gradually diminishing its volume. Very hard
