You definitely don't want to have a propane leak in your camper. And fixing a propane leak in your RV is absolutely essential to the safety of everyone who lives in your camper.
So as we tried to reinstall our oven in our brand new butcher block countertop we found that we didn't do a good job and ended up with a propane leak.
Disconnecting any appliance that runs on propane can be a bit nerve-racking because every year RVers die from propane accidents.
In this episode, we'll show you the best way to ensure that your propane appliances do not leak propane anytime you have to disconnect them. You'll want to make sure to wrap the propane fittings in yellow Teflon tape designed just for gas connections.
And you'll also want a portable propane detector ("sniffer") so that you can test the connection anywhere you have had to retape.
Additionally, this is a great time to check to make sure that your LP Alarm in your camper works the way it should. Don't trust the light! Be sure to spray propane near the alarm to make sure that it detects the gas so that you can know for sure that it works properly!
Be sure to have these things on hand when working with propane appliances:
* Yellow Gas Tape: amzn.to/3o9Mixd
* Propane Detector: amzn.to/3kDTcZk
* LP Alarm: amzn.to/3AHsbtF

I've always been taught that Teflon tape should not be used on a compression joint where there os a flare or olive fitting on the pipe as the seal should be the crimping of the pipe on the rounded mating surface or by biting into the copper/PEX pipe. Ideally there should be a rubber flex seal on portable appliances where they are subject to vibration or movement. As yours is now tested safe, I'd leave it alone but bear it in mind for other joints like that. Thread seal paste or Teflon tape is for threaded joints where the seal is on the threads only - like the ones that are likely underneath the chassis from the bottles. Keep it up - you're doing well!

We learned this too, and used a light wrap on the threaded portion of the connection not the flare/fitting. Ironically, or not, today we actually found that one of the fittings had jiggled loose and we were fortunate we smelled the leak prior to going up in flames with the homemade sourdough bread Lindsay was trying to bake! Thanks again for the tips and clarification! And, of course, for continuing to watch along with us!

We always leak test propane fittings & tires with Windex or soapy water. Lightly spray and look for bubbles. Any pin holes or cracks will cause spray to grow bubbles. When tightening compression fittings it's best to use open-end wrenches. Channel locks work in a pinch. Now get back to work.

Great tips! We tried the soap method in our truck camper before we left on the initial journey and had no luck finding a leak we knew we had. Turns out it was a solenoid that was stuck in our furnace and no amount of spraying inside the furnace would have located it... but our propane sniffer did! We are definitely careful with adjusting the fittings, thus my "tight is tight" was a little too loose! Thanks for watching and sharing the tips!
