The Daily Mail's Craig Hope reflects on Newcastle United's 3-2 defeat at Manchester United. He has spoken to Eddie Howe, who was strong in his criticism of his team's defending.
But Craig believes some of the anger towards the manager and players should be tempered. Also, who gets his star man? Lewis Hall? Anthony Gordon? Emil Krafth?

An abject failure in team selection, tactics, and big match mentality. And that comes from our 'small club' background manager. That is the sixth 'must-win, mustn't lose' match that we have failed in under Eddie's tenure. With regard to the point about returning players, if they did get injured they would have had all the summer to recover.

The big problem is that we have developed a massive trend of freezing up in big games. You mentioned losing composure, and that's exactly what happens every time the pressure seems to crank up. Last season we nearly threw away the CL qualification last season against Leicester. We froze in the cup final. We froze up against Milan and Dortmund. We froze up against Chelsea in the cup. Whenever we play Liverpool we freeze up and look scared. Ultimately, that needs to be fixed if we are going to progress and Eddie needs to find the answer to that mental block next season.

Overall this season has been so draining, filled with constant disappointment whether it’s the tonali ban, constant injuries, PSG away, Dortmund and Milan home, Chelsea away SF, various prem results and now this. I can’t wait for the season to be over and I also can’t wait for the day a lineup is announced and I don’t see Longstaff, Almiron, Krafth, Dummet, Ritchie, Murphy, dubravka etc in the squad. We’re approaching the 6th window under the Saudis, there’s no excuse for still fielding championship players if we want to progress. We need to start judging it on ‘would they start for any other top 6 side?’ If the answer is no then get rid.
@tartansinatra
@tartansinatra 14 күн бұрын
Is FFP an issue in your world? The new management have bought pretty well I reckon - Tino, Hall, Minteh, Gordon and Tonali (exception) after the initial Trippier, Woods, Botman to stave off relegation. I also don't think you can expect a player to be 100% their best in the first games after returning from injury, but many fans seem to ignore that. Howe has picked who's available, but yeah, our away form and individual mistakes have cost us 60 goals in defence. If anything I worry that the coaching regime and high press is too stressful and has caused more injuries than other squads, after it was so successful last year. Wilson and Pope's injuries have cost us, Trippier is having a shocker but there's still players that have developed and we have to remember it's a marathon, not a sprint.
@Cory-lh3yp
@Cory-lh3yp 14 күн бұрын
@@tartansinatra FFP is an issue of course but we’ve had 5 windows and you don’t need to spend crazy money to upgrade on the likes of the players I’ve mentioned as squad players. Brighton rarely spend more than 5-10m on a player we could have easily upgraded the likes of Ritchie, Dummet and Almiron by now. You’re right about the coaching and high press system - and that’s why the loss of tonali was more significant than people realise. Similar to Liverpool making the transition under Klopp in his early days from pressing like maniacs to a more possession based team, Tonali was key to us making that transition. The more you have the ball, the less you need to press. Losing him meant we had to try and go again with the same high press system as the season before which clearly isn’t sustainable over a long period. We’ll always press under Howe but with more possession the press will become more controlled and for lesser periods, which in turn should result in less injuries.

@@BrianPinas9Disagree. How can you say we have or have not? We have had unbelievable injuries this year. Most in the league. We went far in both League and FA cup. Had the group of death in CL. Yes, we have had bad results this season. Yes, we should question some of Howe's decision making. It's impossible to fully judge this season. Our form up until last night was one of best in league. We've not had our best Defence since October, we've not had our best Midfield since October. We rarely have two strikers fit. Our bench is woeful. No depth at all which under the hood is a squad that was only 2 years ago a relegation side. Next season Villa, Spurs and Chelsea will be spread thinner. Liverpool will be dealing with a post Klopp era. We should have moved on the Dummer, Ritchie Dubravka, Wilson,Almiron and maybe even Longstaff. Replacing that with younger and more talented replacements. If we fail to capitalise on that then I'd back what you're saying. Last night individual mistakes cost us. Joelinton and Pope are not fit enough to trust and risky given they're coming back from serious injuries. It's not fair on them. I'm as annoyed and frustrated as anyone but to say another manager wouldn't have some of the same issues is highly unlikely. The same Murphy who got the assist? Don't lump Longstaff and Dubravka with him, You need 10-12 elite players, 5-6 rotation players and 5-6 squad players. Murphy is a brilliant squad player, he supports Newcastle and you won't find a player like him who would stay on the bench if it was best for the side (like Dan Burn). You NEED these players for squad harmony, players are humans don't forget. The only reason I would let Longstaff go is simply because we have Miley and Anderson, we don't need Longstaff anymore and could probably get £15m+ for him as he's a good player for lower half EPL teams.

He knows the team ain't good enough but in my view it's made even worse when he leaves players who are better even at 80% fit on the bench and plays basically people who are just squad players for the littler games. Harvey Barnes should of played with Gordon on the right. J7 should of played from the start as should of Shar and pope. You are entitled to your opinion about Howe Alan and you often make good points. I’m afraid I do not share your view on Howe. Arteta has won a trophy has he not, whats Howe won. No English coach has ever won the PL and it must be a while since any trophy win. 433 with no proper dm has seen us ship goals on transition at an alarming rate this season. To me he makes no attempt to resolve glaringly obvious issues. I hope you are right and he takes us to the promised land, personally I can’t see it and think there are far better coaches out there. Time will tell who’s right, next season will tell us one way or another.

Great video Craig, agree with what you said and in the cold light of day, it makes sense, as I lost it after the match,big time. However you dress things up I still thought we would beat Brighton at home and get something last night, not to be. A massive clear out is required this summer to make progress, far too much dead wood. Going forward I think it will take two years minimum for us to become a “top side” on a regular basis. Hope the two defenders come in on free transfers, be a good start to the new season.

We were better than ManU in every department apart from concentration at key moments. Can’t disagree with your overview and opinions - I’ve got that horrible day after defeat feeling after what was a very Newcastley performance and outcome. I’m starting to feel like it’s the genetics of our club that continues to put us in this position time after time, we just can’t put anything to bed when called upon. The knees go and the form drops and everyone falls unwell just at the crucial time. I worry that Eddie has squeezed the toothpaste tube so much that it’s ready for the recycle bin. He has to get a tune out of these lads at Brentford so that we come away with something from a torturous, but at times magical season which has seen polar opposites reached on more than a few occasions. I just want it over with now so we can get on with whatever plans we have for the refresh over the summer, and bring in Tonali from the cold. Actually, Isak should have dummied and then finished. He's a great finisher and the shot was cleanly struck that it may well have gone in. The problem was Gordon's pass, he did not drag Amrabat away, instead he allowed Amrabat to stay between both Isak and him which gave him the ability to cover both. Instead he should have carried on straight and if Amrabat did not commit, then he should have shot - if he did commit, he could then square it for a tap in.

Man Utd had Scott McTominay upfront for God's sake. We simply don't have the quality to compete with the top teams. Bruno Fernandes bossed Bruno G last night. Don't get me started on Sean Longstaff and Elliot Anderson, they simply aren't good enough to take this club forward. While I agree that there are players within the group that are not at the elite level as you say, I disagree with your constant defence of the manager and description of him as an elite level manager. Eddie has done a fantastic job at Newcastle and I believe that he has earned the right to lead the club next season but there is no evidence of him being an elite manager ( elite managers have a cv full of trophies) and next season will need to be a big improvement for him to prove to be the one that takes newcastle to where we and the owners want to be. If it needs to be another manager that completes that journey then we should all remember the thanks we owe him for the job he did particularly in the first 18 months. Bruno had a decent game but never looked like he has a decent partnership in midfield. As soon as Joelinton came on we saw something. Longstaff and Anderson are like strangers to Bruno. It's a major issue in the middle of the pitch. We just don't dominate teams because of lack of quality. Tonali and Joelinton will make a big difference next season.

Dubravka was shaky but he actually made no mistakes. You want him to save some of those goals but a lot of keepers would let them in. He shouldn't be that low. Trippier was by far the worse player on the pitch, he was at fault for the first goal and then constantly out of position, he should have the lowest mark. Longstaff was average but was nowhere a 3. Murphy did more than Bruno with a great assist. Agree with Gordon and Hall as the best players.

Craig we have given goals away like this all season and not done anything about it. We have been vulnerable to players walking into box all season (never mind running) without challenge, just what on earth are they working on training! Yet we still had enough chances to win! Think you need to take your rose tinted off about EH!

I love Almiron but it’s the end of the road for him surely. He hardly brought anything when he came on. Likewise Barnes too ( though obviously not th end of the road for him) I think Barnes is more frustrating cos he just doesn’t press, it’s like he is allergic to running.

Murphy Longstaff Dubravka Anderson can not be starting players from now on otherwise the club will not go forward.This has been a very frustrating season but it can NOT be allowed to happen in the future.We MUST have a better quality squad next season so injuries don’t affect the team so much.

Totally accurate Craig. Did enough to win. Pen was never going to get there. Can’t wait to hear the audio. 3 on 1 was a disgrace. Should have scored. Longy chance was poor. Murphy should never play again, you literally nailed it he just hoofs it in the box. No vision or picking people out. Awful and needs to go. Yes set up Gordon but that’s it. His header from corner went to Amad also for his goal, poor clearance. Tripps was shocking but burn and Krafth poor also. Hall was excellent. Overall it’s just typical NUFC - their back line and no striker. Yet Casemiro was world class !! Missed a load of chances and blown Brighton and this game entirely. Have to beat Brentford to have any chance. Can’t see it now. Or if we win you can see Man U beating city in the cup so we miss out.

Why didn’t Eddie play his best players first but brings them on too late on the 60th minute, Eddie needs to take the blame as well

On holiday in pub watching and even Man U fans said he wouldn’t change it for at least 60mins, that’s how predictable we have become!

Nope. The last players he tried to sign were Kalvin Phillips and Phillip Billing. Apparently we're signing Lloyd Kelly? He's a Championship player and Bournemouth reject
