Continuing our look back at the James Bond video game series with The World is Not Enough. I found a lot to enjoy in this one but is it worth digging it out of the attic when Nightfire and Everything or Nothing exits?

12:15 Night Watch used to creep me out back in the day. Mainly cuz of the music and sneaking around trying to avoid Elektra's security guards. And how the body armours were just hanging onto nothing (like they were hoovering in midair) in random places like in a cupboard or that garage where we deal with Davidov. Also found it kind of creepy how the baddies would come running up to you while they're trying to shoot you dead.

I never thought someone would actually echo my thoughts completely. I had an absolute phobia with this level when I was little, I hated it so much that it was actually like taking a 50lbs weight off my shoulder when it was over. The music alone as a kid terrified me. lol

Most of my gaming has been on Nintendo consoles, so I can’t say I’ve played this one. I’ve been playing through it’s N64 sibling, though, and been enjoying that - it’s the 2nd Bond game made by Eurocom after, uh, _James Bond Jr_ for the NES. Interesting that this one felt like _Agent Under Fire_ because N64 TWINE definitely felt a lot like _Nightfire_ to me. Probably because Eurocom also made the latter. Side note: Cigar Girl stabbing that man without a knife reminded me of the film _Daleks: Invasion Earth - 2150 AD_ in which many of the extras had to mime hurling bombs in an action scene because they ran out of bomb props. It’s quite clear they’re only throwing air at the Daleks, but it still makes them explode.

I'm really looking forward to playing the N64 version, more so now that I know it's from Eurocom! I've also been more of a Nintendo fan my whole life so I'm surprised I never got TWINE for the N64 when I was a kid... Maybe it just never arrived to our small local shops where I would usually get games from. Back before the internet was the go-to place for such things!
@iamskyfall

That makes sense as Eurocom developed both the N64 TWINE and (console) Nightfire, whereas Agent Under Fire began life as a PS2 version of The World Is Not Enough.

Calvin Dyson the N64 version is worth checking out. Quite different from the PS1 version some new levels , others aren t there. Somewhat more realistic weapons graphics. Actual skying and so on. Discovered the PS1 version in lenght thanks to your video so thank you for that. I wouldn’t have guessed there were quite many elements PS1 did actually better than N64 . Definitely will give it a try asap. And, yeah, enjoy a martini and keep up the goos jobs with your videos. Cheers from France.

Calvin Dyson It’s like this one. If you find your old Game Boy in the loft, perhaps go on eBay and pick up the game cart for a fiver. But it’s not a game worth hunting down an old Game Boy just to play (I suppose with handhelds you don’t have to faff about making it work with new TVs). It’s not bad, but it isn’t amazing either.

@@calvindyson in addition to playing Blackjack, you can also play a card game called Red Dog and Baccarat as well in the James Bond 007 game for Gameboy. Once you have $25,000 , you then go into the high rollers room and play Baccarat with one of the lesser villains. Additionally, by inputting the right password at the start of the game, you can skip right to the casino level and play one of the three card games independently of your progress in the main story. I always liked this feature, as playing Baccarat really made me feel like James Bond himself.

I think the problem with the PS1 era games, especially TWINE, compared to both the N64 and PS2 is that the games feel very dated and I think it's the choppy blocky graphics compared to the more refined looks of the N64 and PS2, and I think that's what brings a lot of those games down for me. And I've always been more of a N64 fan tbh, and I will cannpot wait til the day we get both the TWINE and Goldeneye N64 reviews.

One game to review is a game called Operation Stealth it was a point n click adventure game from 1990 released on Amiga, PC and Atari ST. When it came out in the US Interplay had just secured the Bond licence and they renamed the game to James Bond The Stealth Affair and changed some characters name. Orginally instead of Bond his name was John Glames

I've been waiting for you to get 'round to covering this one! The developers at Black Ops would only go on to develop a pair of the most reviled first-person shooters in the sixth console generation ('Fugitive Hunter: War on Terror' and 'Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines'). And speaking as someone from the more "hardcore" end you alluded to? I tend to put this game right alongside those on account of its weak gunplay / generally flat design. It's obviously totally valid to find enjoyment in it from the Bondian perspective, and I can see folk overlooking its many technical shortcomings as you did; but I can't help but fixate on some of the more prevalent flaws, and to spot the DNA for some of Black Ops' later games. Granted, perspectives can be largely skewed by anyone having played Eurocom's N64 take on TWINE, which feels so far superior in nearly every regard / iterates on the GoldenEye formula in incredibly satisfying fashion. You're in for a treat when you get around to that one -- especially if you're looking into arranging for some multiplayer gameplay. If you enjoyed 'Nightfire's multiplayer, know that it is a direct evolution of the mechanics established in TWINE, going so far as to share some stages. I would also recommend attempting to play the game on 'Secret Agent' if at all possible, for the sake of the expanded mission objectives and such. Anyhow: Left this comment in the interest of weighing in on what might well be one of the weakest Bond games from my perspective, after having seen how much you comparatively seemed to get out of it. Maybe I need to give this game a more fair shot again? At the very least, it's better than 'Rogue Agent!' Writing a longform article around the development / content of that game sucked the life from me, but it's also how I first discovered your channel some time ago. Silver linings, I suppose!

Glad you had fun with it though, Calvin! Have way more memories with TND as you know but I totally remember anticipating this release at the time, too! I'm definitely more of a third person guy though so I remember being a tiny bit disappointed with it initially but I've grown much fonder of it over the years! A much simpler time. I will never forget playing that turncoat level for the first time and almost "blowing it" (pun intended lol) when I came across that bomb at 20:28. I had like a whole minute left (or close to a minute left) trying to figure out how to disarm it. When it came to just TEN measly seconds left I FINALLY knew what to do (I can't remember if I panicked at 10 seconds, paused the game and simply looked on KZfaq on how to disarm it, or if I accidentally discovered it myself). Either way I remember discovering that I had to shoot those spinning black square objects off the bomb. And after I shot all the square objects I had only FIVE seconds left! Then Robinson called and told me to quickly use the cell phone stunner on the bomb in order to short circuit/defuse it. And by the time I finally defused the bomb it was just ONE SECOND left! Talk about a "CLOSE CALL" lol! Couldn't have been any closer! That's my little funny story about the game. The n64 version is a LOT better than this version, but at least this version is better than that crappy (gameplay-wise) tomorrow never dies lol.

I think the reason we don't get more gambling in Bond games has something to do with them breaking the pacing of the game, since they're almost always action- or stealth-oriented affairs. As someone who grew up with Agent Under Fire as one of his first video games ever, a part of me still wonders how that PS2 version of TWINE would have played. IIRC, I think I even saw some ads that came with the VHS/DVD release of the movie that showed screenshots of when Agent Under Fire was still a TWINE tie-in. Still, it's really cool to see how much of the mechanics and some animations and music had their origins in here and were retooled and reused come Agent Under Fire. If you like the cheats in PS1 TWINE, you should see some of the cheats you can fool around with in Tomorrow Never Dies.

Wow! This was the first Bond game I've ever played on PS2 followed by Tomorrow Never Dies although I'm sure Tomorrow Never Dies comes out before this? Or maybe I'm wrong? Anyway, I missed playing Goldeneye 64. I heard so much about it but never got around to playing it. Love this review, Calvin! Brings back so much memories!

It's interesting how Agent Under Fire started as a PS2 port of this game. That's why some music, sfx and weapons are carried over :)

I am a hardcore gamer, but I love you Bond game reviews, these games are as good as shooters get, sometimes even better than the competition, I know it takes time, but I hope to see your next review sooner than later (don't rush it though), because they are quite entertaining to see games in the franchise I haven't played, or roll back in Nostalgia for the ones that I did play. By the way, you know you can play PS1 games on PS3 as well? You failed to mention it, and I recall that you played on PS3 some of the later games, so that is one less system you would need to plug into your TV if that helps.

Thanks very much for this, I really appreciate it, especially coming from a self-confessed hardcore gamer as yourself. For some reason I don't think I'm able to play PS1 games on my PS3... I remember trying some years ago for it didn't work, I don't think I had the correct model or something like that.

I don’t have any nostalgia for this because the N64 game is so superior. But it’s still better then tomorrow never dies and 007 racing. Personally I want a Bond game in 2022 as we most likely won’t get a film for the 60th anniversary but I can’t decide on who I’d want to do it. But I don’t know if we’ll ever get one again sadly. Also I recently tried the quantum DS game and it is the weirdest controlling game I ever played. I don’t even know what genre of game it is I guess it’s a RPG?

If they can’t do a film for the 60th then the least we can hope for are a new book and game surely... keeping my fingers crossed!

Even if there isn't an official game released, there are a few fan projects that might be available by 2022. Particularly there are Goldeneye ROM hacks in development for The Spy Who Loved Me and The Living Daylights. If we do get an official game it would be fun if they made one in the style of Skyrim or GTA. Bond goes to such exotic locations, imagine being able to interact with them like those games do.

@@juliabrnssr That's awesome! Personally, I'd love to see Tomorrow Never Dies remade in Goldeneye, I feel like it could actually be a really good game. I played Goldfinger 64 a couple of years ago, and was pretty impressed.

In regards to the casino level and the lack of similar such levels in Bond games, the Game Boy Zelda “clone” Bond game actually had a casino in the Merrikesh part of the game where you had to win enough money in order to gain access to the High Roller area and thus advance the plot, not to mention you could get Bond banned from the casino tables by winning too much and netting the hotel’s presidential suite in the process. Just pointing that out since that game doesn’t get much love from the community these days. 😊

5:23 I reckon it is a cigar holder in courtesy of the movie. At the start of the movie in lechaise's office (might've not spelled that right), the girl who kills lechaise gives bond a cigar holder with a cigar inside.

The ladies doing that weird yoga. If you interact with the lady at 11:48 who's boyfriend is standing by Zukovsky's door from an angle so her boyfriend's in the background, she looks more like she's actually pointing at him as she says "he's head of casino security, the one over by Zukovsky's door."

Regarding 27:50 - Don’t forget that the PS3 also runs PS1 games. All models do it regardless of whether they contain the PS2 backwards compatibility. :) Thanks for the review, you’ve done an excellent job! I had the N64 version in my youth myself.... quite enjoyed it in spite of it not QUITE being up to the Goldeneye Standard - it still managed to be close.

A few things. 1: I'm not a huge fan of that ski level, but the Blackjack mission is pretty cool. 2: I'm advising against rapid fire shooting, as bullets don't effect enemies when they have their animations going on (this helps if one plays for score and cheats). 3: There's an extra FMV if one beats the game using the higher difficulty, containing that Christmas line. 4: I'm not a huge fan of protecting sequences either, be it Natalya or someone else. Definitely a fun game though, been having a blast recently with it. (Playing the NTSC-U/C version on actual PS1 (I live in Europe, so I've played the PAL version to death already), with a CRT TV, and with a PS2 controller as well, partly for having them vibrations, even though I have a PS1 controller that can vibrate as well.)

I really used to love this game, I once had a dream that there was run and jumping level set on top of the millennium dome, and I can vividly remember having to run along the top and jump into a hole... But in the actual game its just a movie cut scene? Mandela moment. I also love Tomorrow Never Dies, as it opens with a free roaming Goldeneye first level. I used to prefer TWINE but sometimes I prefer TND. The one thumbs down must be from a Nightfire supporter. :)

If you watch the E3 2003 trailer for Everything or Nothing, Bond has a different voice actor that could be the same one as from this game and 007 Racing. That trailer was also released prior to Heidi Klum and Shannon Elizabeth joining the cast.

I have a feeling that this weird animation with the females(11:36) was the only motion capture the developers did for the women in the game and were like "F it, we don't have time to record more idle animations for the women in this game. Just roll with the one animation we did."

I remember being so frustrated by the boss fight with Gabor in "Fallen Angel." It took me several tries to devise a strategy to run for cover, throw pipe bombs, and use the grenade launcher to weaken him and dispatch all the goons. When I finally defeated him, I couldn't believe what happened. I was in so much shock, I nearly blew the final part of the mission where I had to shoot Elektra.
