If Harrison Ford can return to a beloved action/adventure character years after the fact, why can't Brosnan?

However, I dont think he could/would/should return for a 'send-off'. I prefer Bond actors to simple vanish into the imagination after another terrific adventure. I'm not regretful they did a complete story arc for DC's Bond, but I don't want it to become a recurring thing, and I prefer each Bond to live in in my imagination without an on-screen swan song. I want to see Pierce in more big films, but not back as 007. (though I won't complain if it does somehow happen ;)

I don't think there is any way in hell Barbara and Michael would go for a previous Bond in the movie series, even if it is just a once off. But I'm reminded of how the BBC celebrated the 50th anniversary of Dr. Who with a TV movie dramatizing the creation of its first season. If EON and Amazon actually put a bit more effort into the 60th anniversary, they could have made a special for Amazon Video where Lazenby, Dalton, and Brosnan would each play Bond for a 45 minute segment in an anthology movie, kind of like the movie equivalent of Fleming's short stories but with a previous actor playing Bond in each story. They could have even based it on some of his short stories. It would have been a real treat for Bond fans during the anniversary.

I read an article back in early 2015 about Roger Moore shopping around a project in Hollywood to get all of the James Bond actors together in one film (playing different characters, of course) in the vein of the then-popular "The Expendables" franchise. Sadly, that project never came to fruition, particularly with Moore dying just a couple of years later. Even without Connery and Moore, I think the same project could work with Lazenby, Dalton, Brosnan and even Craig playing a team of retired British spies coming out of retirement for one last mission.
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja Жыл бұрын
Honestly have never heard that, similar to the Pierce-Kevin McClory proposal in the video-you learn something every day! There was a project Roger mentioned in the early 90's which was to have him and Sean appear with Michael Caine but little is known about what the story etc would have been [Roger said he didn't want to play up a 'battle of the Bond's angle]. Surprised Roger was looking to do something like that as late as early 2015 [especially as Sean had retired over a decade earlier]. Earlier this year it emerged that there was a plan for a trailer for the first Kingsman film to have all the Bond's around the same table to toast the Kingsman characters. They actually did get quite close to doing it but Connery wouldn't appear [as his health was failing] and it eventually fell though much to Mathew Vaughn and Mark Millar's regret.

The sad part is DAD started out fine. But the Gene Therapy thing just got too much. Man, on my recent rewatch of Craig era Bond films I thought about what a wasted opportunity was to cast Javier Bardem in Skyfall instead of Pierce Brosnan which would make a lot of sense (no disrespect to Bardem, of course). From the overall context of the Bond universe casting Brosnan as a former agent turned supervillain would fit great into the personal arc of the character and it would answer the question where do the Bond agents go after they retire, willingly or not. And also Brosnan shared the common past with Judy Dench's M. Man, what a film it would be :)

An oldman Brosnan Bond coming back to do one last mission is a GREAT idea though! I can see it now, with scenes like him brushing his Aston Martin Vanquish or looking at his Lazer watch or Ericson JB988 and remembering the good old days! and As 'the same passions' is played over the scene 😊 But when he sips his glass of Vodka he remembers Paris, he becomes sad inside and David Arnolds 'The last Goodbye' plays in the background 😞Then he comes across the Lapel Pin of Electra's and his anger starts to kick in and Arnolds 'Renard's Plutonium Gift' is gently played 😠 BUT THEN, Parodi Fair's theme kicks in as Brosnan reaches inside his jacket for his Parker Pen and he asks "For england?", gives it 3 clicks then says..... "No" .....clicks 3 again and his final words "Still for me" 😉 END scene Hope you like it man, thanks for doing this :)

5:58 Wow, I’d never seen that interview before. That’s fascinating. I’d known he had been considered for Warhead 2000 but I always assumed it was McClory’s mad ravings, considering at other points he also said there were going to get Liam Neeson or Timothy Dalton. All part of the McClory hype train that he insists is as grand as the Orient Express but in reality has the length and opulence of the Waterloo & City line. Good thing for Pierce it never happened or he might have passed over for GoldenEye. He would’ve been a one-shot Bond in a weird off-shoot movie and we’d have Paul McGann or Sean Bean as Bond #5.

@@wildlifetails Nah, they wouldn’t have sold the rights to him. If EON had bombed so hard without Brosnan in 95 that they decided to put the rights up for sale, then a bidding war would’ve ensued and the rights would’ve gone to the highest bidder. McClory may have been rich but there would’ve been media moguls with far deeper pockets who would’ve outbid him. Besides, while Brosnan was a key part of GoldenEye’s success, so was its great script and direction. If McClory had made a Brosnan led film but hired a weak director and writer, it could’ve easily underperformed. Wow, Calvin, this idea never occurred to me, and at first blush it seemed outrageous -- but you very quickly made this a totally legit argument. EON has indeed traditionally been about forward progress and not looking back, but even before you got to the idea of an Amazon one-off, I thought a six-episode limited streaming series would be the perfect way to make this work. The demise of Daniel Craig's version of 007 proves once and for all that EON now considers Bond a regenerating character that can exist in individual timelines. Pierce returning for a proper sendoff of *his* Bond would be incredible, especially in the context of a limited series that would not impede the forward momentum of the cinematic series. And from the Expendables franchise to Liam Neeson's recent filmography to FX's The Old Man, we know the worldwide audience has an appetite for action heroes of a certain age. The return of our brilliant Brosnan to James Bloody Bond in this manner would be the apogee.
@NelsonStJames

I've often thought to myself in recent years it would be interesting if they brought back Brosnan for one more go around as Bond. Although, as was mentioned in the video, No Time To Die unfortunately has a lot of story beats you'd likely see in a final outing Brosnan movie so it might feel a bit too similar in that regard.

Glad this was covered as I see it coming up a lot in comment sections. My opinion isn't a popular one but I think the time for a comeback has passed. NTTD was a 'Bond out of retirement' story when Craig was 51 at the time of filming and I can't see them wanting to do it again [especially as Pierce is nearly 70]. Like Connery, I think a video game would be more suitable but given Project 007 seems to still be ages away that's a long shot too. I think 'The November Man' is far more of a 'secret Bond film' than the Rock and that's the epilogue for Pierce's Bond for me.

I have long wanted to see Brosnan back in the role as an older Bond. Goldeneye is my favorite Bond and TND is good. The other two were diminishing returns which was such a burn. They had so much more potential for good films starring Brosnan that went unrealized. So yeah, I’d love to see a last hurrah for Brosnan. But let’s be honest, they’ll never recapture the greatness of Goldeneye even now. It’s hard to recreate what worked about great 80s and 90s action films. It was a time, place, production design language, etc that has passed. So even if this happened, I reckon the film we get would not be what I wanted it to be. Best to move on into a new era.

And then do another video game With Pierce voicing Bond and do the Spy who loved me and Moonraker. Which would make a lot of sense since the goldeneye on N64 did have extra levels of Moonraker of temple and aztec which I think took place during those movies. And then another James Bond movie they could make into a video game with Pierce Brosnan voicing James Bond is the man with the golden gun since that movie wasn’t good. But they could make a very good video game out of it too. So interesting that this channel takes up this idea. I have thought about it and discussed it a few times over the last year. In fact, I think it would be exactly what James Bond would need and could potentially bring back what we have come to love about the franchise over decades. I think it was really a mistake for EON to subject the Bond films to the logic of tentpole blockbusters and the reboot logic of the last 20 years. I firmly believe that the film series itself didn't need that. Nor do Bonds need to be half a billion dollar auteur films. Remember that Cubby Broccoli always advocated that making 10 cents look like 10 dollars was a virtue in Bond. I have loved the Bond films all my life and with Craig, who I think is a great actor and an inspired Bond, I understood what I was missing at some point after Casino Royale, one of my personal top 5 films: The feeling of satisfaction and at the same time hunger for the "next". Please: bring us these films again at shorter intervals and let them take their immanent form, free of deep psychology. I would argue the brand did well in being more than the sum of its parts But now that the door has been opened - let's pull the cart out of the mud and give Quentin Tarantino the opportunity with "his" Bond Pierce Brosnan to restore the films to their original texture (I would love to hear that dialogue!). I’m sure there is a global audience yearning to see a mature actor (who has indeed come up well short with only 7 years of tenure) return as his most iconic alter ego. Remember that it was Brosnan who re-established James Bond as a pop culture fixture in a post-Cold War world. It would also be an elegant way of facing up to the anachronistic aspects of this franchise in a woke and gender conscious climate rather than chasing after the zeitgeist. Granted: in this respect, Broccoli and Wilson have done just about everything right so far. I'd also like to point out that no young British actor under 50 seems to make a strong point for himself in the part at this moment in time. Thanks for this video, Calvin!

I have thought a lot about this question, Calvin. I would love to you to have a look at some alternate timeline, where Pierce didn't step down right after DAD and made 2 more films before Daniel showed up. So, let me tell in some details about these 2 potential films. Intro: Despite the suprising sucess of Bounre in 2002, which provided more serious and personal-driven style in spy film, Barbara and Michael still decided to keep Brosnan in role. They think, that these new trends can work with Pierce lead, so they decided to make a couple of flicks with him, until he will become too old for the part. Fifth Brosnan 007-film - "A Wrath of the Beast" was released in early 2005, and shooting took place in 2004. In this film Bond was in Mexico, and during the mission, he was attacked and chased by the son of Franz Sanchez, which wants a revenge for his beloved and powerful father. Film will include hardcore chases through the desert, where Bond will be without his gadgets, and he will rely on his wits. Closer to final act he reached his HQ in Mexico, where he will receive a new Aston Martin and some gadgets for the final battle with Sanchez's son. Q will arrive there to help 007 to prepare, and James will recieve some aid from his mexico collegue, someone like Ferrara in FYEO or Vijay in OP. There will be a strong battle, where Bond and his Mexico friend will lure Sanchez's goons into painful traps, similar to Rambo's tricks in Rambo 5, and than there will be a dynamic chase through desert and gun-battle in desert with Sanchez Jr. Despite Sanchez was strong in fist combat, Bond will eventually defeat him, but he will shocked at the fact, that enemies from past can hunt him after such a long time. The main Bond girl here can be Salma Hayek or Michelle Rodrigez. Title song will be in metal style, it will be performed by Disturbed of System of a Down. Film will be a direct continuation of LTK and will make Dalton's and Brosnan's Bond the same. And it will gain a huge massive sucess, thanks to more personall story, and more horrifying style of story. Six film - "The Angel with a Cold Heart" will be Brosnan's swansong. It was released in 2007, and shooting took place in 2006. In this film Bond, along with his collegues will train a young studens for future work in Mi-6. It will present the mentor-student story, where Bond will have a strong fathership with one of these studens, and will properly try to make a good agent from this guy. So, this story will strongly adress Brosnan's age, who will be 53 in this movie. But despite all, this student will betray James and during their common mission he will take the side of terrorist group. After 007 rejecting the offer to join this group, this young man will provide an attack to Bond's friends, and some of them will be hurted of killed. The conflict will reach it's peak in final, where this student with terrorist will take a hostages in public place in London, and Bond with his 00-collegues will be sent to stop this crime. So there will be a massive battle, simiral to TSWLM, where will be a massive fight between agents and terrosist, and Bond will have a personal knife fight with his former pupil. This young guy will also catch a Bond girl as a hostage and lure Bond into the top of high roof, where this fight will take place. Bond will be very wounded during battle, but he will be able to drop the guy from the roof. This betray hurted James so much, that he went into retirement after these events, and he wasn't able to recover. In the final scene he will spent time with his girl, and M will phone him and ask to return, until Mi-6 will find a worthy sucessor to 007. But Bond will be sceptic to this offer and says to M that he needs a time to think. This film will mirror GE in terms of script. His first film was about brotherhood between young friends, and his swansong was about fathership, which older agent can feel to young pupil. In some way the fim will recemble Revenge of the Sith and Rocky-5, and it also was a massive financial and critic sucess. Title song will be melancholic and sad in rock style, and can be performed by Evanscence. Gunbarrel will be very intense, cold, simiral to LTK one. When Pierce officially step down from the role in early 2008, public decided, that Brosnan's best 007 entries were GE, TWINE, AWOTB and TAWACH. In this timeline Pierce remained a good relations with Barbara and Michael, and his last 2 films made a soft bridge to Craig's tenure, which began in 2009, with CR release. Brosnan went through full circle of story - from young agent in GE to older and tired in TWAWACH, so now it was a need of full reboot. And CR satisfy this request, presenting an entirely new chapter about young agent. I wish this storyline was real. I hope you will like these thoughts.

I was watching Black Adam recently and this exact thought crossed my mind. A one off Brosnan 007 movie with him could be excellent - get Chris Nolan involved!

Most underrated Bond - he only did two but they were both bangers imo. For a third film for him, I think it would be cool to have him be a bit more charming (ice has melted type of thing).

Made me wonder immediately a'la Connery coming back for one more official EON film. I would love for this to happen and it has been refreshing to see to many comments supporting Calvin's views. I would love to see Pierce return for his proper swansong as 007. But I feel the producers would definitely stick to their agendas. I was never a big fan of Barbara or Michael, especially in their interviews. ⭐️

Big Finish tried to obtain the rights to do a series of James Bond audio plays a few years ago, but were rejected. If that ever happened, I reckon Pierce Brosnan's got just the right kind of voice for such work.

Heres how I see it... Brosnan definitely deserved a 5th movie back in the day and a $20 million cheque, plus a brand new Aston Martin. Say what you want about Die another Day, the series was NOT begging for a reboot or anything. Weather he would do Casino Royale or another stand alone movie, the man deserved that 5th movie. His personae brought the franchise back to a fresh new audience with Goldeneye when the movies before were not doing so well as they could have been. Even in 2004 when he was let go, they released 'Everything or Nothing' game with the thought that he'll definitely do another one soon, so you can see his popularity. Oh it upsets me in the Parkinson show, Inside the actors studio and Bafta 40th Tribute that he's confident he'll do another :( At the end of the day though, Pierce is an actor first and foremost and its his job and passion as a performer to articulate the human conflict through theatrical drama. He didn't become an actor to be an action hero. Because of that, I think he knows as well that its business and he's already been let down twice and he respectively wants Daniel Craig to have his time as Bond. Weather one liked NTTD's ending or not, bringing Brosnan back for one last adventure would be a little disrespectful to Daniels teenier as Bond. I WILL SAY HOWEVER, I think its still a mystery to us all at the end of the day over why they let him go in 2004. Hearing that Barbera was crying in the back ground on the phone call leads me to believe that this was a decision she didn't want to happen. Was it Michaels decision? was it a studio interference? It seemed like the actor and producers didn't have any fights during those years, so what happened??????

It's interesting to think where they might have gone had they continued with Brosnan. Maybe his next one would have been a FYEO-style down-to-Earth project but exactly as you say, even though DAD is looked down on now, it made a ton of money and was reviewed fairly well at the time so the series wasn't seemingly in as desperate need of a reboot as it has been at other times in history!

He is justifiably pissed, now his look blatantly camp compared to bond now. Hell, they look more camp than Daltons. They had John Cleese for gods sake! In several interviews he's seemed pretty pissed, but when they say 'its a cruel business' well, its not like the guy has been starving to death.

Bringing Brosnan back would convince viewers that we have put Craig's story arc behind us, and the franchise is reverting to the non-connected format of films that came before Craig. He should be brought back for 1 last film (like David Tennant in Doctor Who), followed by a new actor in the format of pre-Craig films. Great idea really. Even Craig himself would approve, because he wanted his own arc to be seperate from the remaining franchise, so he wouldn't want some continuation of his storyline through the so-called codename theory. Also in this Brosnan swan song they could feature a flashback of Bond's younger days which would introduce the next Bond within the film!

I dont see this happening. Connery's turn in Diamonds Are Forever was purely to drag the audience back to the theatre after Lazenby. Eon Productions are looking to appeal to a much younger audience, hence why they looking for a younger actor. And I think the recent rumour of Aaron Taylor-Johnson would be a master-stroke if he's selected! The only way a Brosnan film would work is if he too meets his end, either by dying on-screen, or we see Bond retiring.

While making some reflections about this video of yours, I came up with a short synopsis that I think that could've worked for Brosnan's Bond. The story picks up Die Another Day and reinvents it, kinda like in a Skyfall method. Bond actually never woke up from his trauma after being tortured for 14 months. Instead, he had a deep sleep and bad dreams (insert the actual film here lol), and by the time he woke up, the world had changed. Gustav Graves died by the hands of Jinx, who sacrificed herself to put an end to the maniac's plans. The MI-6 were surprised that Bond could have woken up over 20 years after all his torture and despite someone had taken the 007 number, he wants to prove that he is still capable to do the job. He unofficially finds out about the plans of a man that wants to hack military satellites around the globe, firing missiles from a country to another and start the third world war. He also intends to use his own line of diverse armored vehicles to sell it through the black market, and keep financing that very war all over the globe. Bond will use his skills to stop this madman and recover his 00 status. It's maybe an OTT story I came up with, but at least it'd be something different from the “retired agent that needs to come back for a last mission" plot.

Here's a thought: Since Daniel Craig got a massive send-off, is that what we should expect for Bond actors from now on? Are the days of a Bond's final Adventure being just another movie gone for good now?
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja Жыл бұрын
I can see each Bond being it's own continuity from now on, similar to other franchises like Batman so your more likely to get a 'farewell' film as it also leads to the end of that continuity/cast. The comments from Eon indicate they are looking for the next Bond to be a long term appointment so it's very likely.

Would love to see this idea fleshed out… an old grizzled bond coming out of retirement to investigate a new threat… the child of Alec Trevelyn out for revenge working for what’s left of Spectre. Maybe Pierces Bond can turn him to the light and make right by his fallen friend by saving his son… lining the kid up to take on the 007 namesake after a heartfelt death by the movies end. Thanks for the video Calvin. Love em’

I'm with you here Calvin. Since I saw DAD back in 2002, I always wanted a proper send off for Brosnan. I always thought that he deserved a good last one! In "The November Man" he proves that he can do great action scenes! Also I actually thought that the videogame Nightfire was going to be his last before revealing the name "Die Another Day". I miss him a lot as Bond. I always loved his performance. Awesome video mate! Cheers! :D

I don't see him playing bond as an active service agent but I could potentially see him playing bond as M (after a lifetime of exquisite service they promote him to head of the 00 section) then conferring the bond identity on the new bond for his next adventure.

I think it’s a great idea, sadly I don’t think it would appeal to a massive audience bringing him back compared to having a brand new actor. However, I think this idea would work better (and actually flourish) as a limited time one off series on Amazon Prime. You only have to look at Ewan McGregor coming back as Obi Wan Kenobi and how well that did. Why not do the same?

Would be interesting to see bond short stories with all characters in the “past” and “late” stage of their careers. Also a way to introduce the new guy. Like a Quantum of Solace type deal (the book).
